Maybe use propolis tincture on it? It has antibacterial properties and will be ok for him to ingest a little bit?
If this doesn't improve it, I probably wouldn't wait too long before using an antibiotic ointment, but maybe he shouldn't eat that. You could talk to a pharmacist?

Ashlee got this, too! Though her teeth made a big lump on her thumb, it didn't get infected. It did look really sore and was hugely inflamed, but it seems to have mostly gone now. We didn't do anything with it.

Ella had an infection on a finger (and she was a constant finger-sucker), the Paed said if it wasn't down in a couple of days (you could see the infection well under the skin, IYKWIM) to give her oral antibiotics.

My friends daughter had this a few weeks ago. She ended up having to have some cream put on it and a plaster. It really hurt her as well.

I wonder if you put some lemon juice on it it would stop him from chewing on it and give it time to heal up, depends how infected it is though.

Don't put lemon juice on it if the skins broken. It would hurt like hell!
