let me clarify something first - nope not pregnant nor planning to get pregnant in the near future just a question (to help make a decision about pregnancies)
Those of you who had GD and then got pregnant again - did you get GD again? Is it like once you got it once you will always get it?

yep i got it both times. i was told if just because i had it first time round didnt mean i would get it second but that the chances were higher of course. mine was mainly due to weight etc... so my midwife thought if i watch what i ate etc... i might not get it second time but i did even though i was a lot more careful. ive also been told there is a higher chance i will get it later in life too

I think I got it with rhyley because of family history BUT I did not get it with the first 2 (and yep got tested for it) Could of been an age thing as well.

yeah it turns out there is a family history on my mothers side but i didnt know when i was pregnant and didnt have the test so only found out right at the end. second time round i just knew i would get it and was tested earlier. I know that it often gets worse with each pregnancy, maybe it was lurking with your first two or something

Thanks for that little bit of info Robyn. My OB is sure I got it in the last few weeks of my pregnancy with Josh and there is a strong family history of GD in my mum's family. Which means that my next pregnancy I have to be very careful.

I managed to control my levels by watching what I was eating and testing alot per day. but managed not to have to go on insulin... just don't want to have to go on it if we did decide to have another one.
At least one good thing was I went back down to pre pregnancy weight after a couple of weeks

i didnt have to do insulin first time round, just watched what i was eating which was fine cos i was stuck in hospital anyway. second time tried to control it with eating but even though i was really good, in fact i was losing weight i was being so good, i still had to go on insulin which is when they said how it gets worse as pregnancy goes progresses. I was totally freaked out about the insulin, had many a panick attack over it but they gave me one of the needles where its hidden so you dont see it going into you and it was actually easier than doing the finger testing in the end. hated doing it ofcourse, its all just such a pain in the butt, especially when you go to the mall or somewhere to eat, you have to either go off to the toilets and inject yourself or descretly do it at the table, felt like a druggie or something.

i think its aimee joy who had it first time and hasnt got it second time yet..though she has just had her second 12 hour fasting test.. (correct me if I'm wrong aimee) mw said if you get it then 60% chance of getting type 2 diabetes later in life..she also said she's seen lots of people of all shapes and sizes get it.. my2angels..i always thought it was not related to size really..but is it? ( i could totally be wrong) just only know one person who had it and she is quite small i read somewhere family histroy predisposes you but not much else?

i think it depends on the person rather than the size. its not that every overweight person is going to get it but if your lifestyle is not that flash and there is a history then there is a higher chance you will get it and its gonna be harder to control. I know quite a few people who are little, healthy but still got it and also a heap of huge ladies who never got it, it was just genetic history i guess.

yeah I don;t think it was a wieght thing - I am not a big girl (although wish I was really skinny too) so that wasn't a factor why I got it.

Nic01 had it last time, but not this time round. I had no problems at all when preggy with Hannah, but like Kawww said have just done my second GTT. Hopefully it will be normal again...
My sis had it first time, but not second with her twins. And yeah from what I understand there is a greater risk of getting it again but not necessarily.

Yeah I had it with my first pregnancy & managed to control it with diet. I was told I had an 80% chance of getting it again this time, but have had 2 tests so far & they've both come back clear. I think I've got to have one more test this 3rd trimester just to check again. My midwife got me to start my diet almost as soon as I got pregnant though to try & avoid it, so I think that's probably helped a bit (although I haven't been following the diet quite as strictly as when I had GD & had to test myself!!)
