I have to do the second glucose test this week (the fasting one) as my screening one came back high. I have quite a bit of sugar in my urine the whole way through so far which is why I did the screening one early.
So for those of you that have/had GD, I just want to know what to expect if I do have it. What are you able to eat? Did you get another scan later on to check size of bubs? Do they induce you a bit early if they think they are getting too big? Have you had any other issues?
Anything much appreciated. Ta

i got this with Rhyley. to answer your questions:
You can eat anything with out sugar but also be careful with white bread - potatoes - chippies - etc... as they break down and turn into glucose. When/if you are diagnosed with GD you will be referred to a Diabetes educator and also a dietian to le tyou know what you can and can't eat or drink, remember orange juice has heaps of sugar in it.
I got a growth scan at 35 weeks - Rhyley was 7lb then. since I have big babies anyhow they were just going to leave me to go into labour myself. but it was picked up Rhyley was breeched and since his size and position of my placenta turning did not work. So he was born 1 week early by ceasar.
I did not have any issues as long as I was good with what I ate. It was dishertening when you thought you were being good and your levels were still high.
Don't beleive all you read on the net about it - like all GD babies are born by ceasar, they have higher level of still births, they have to go to Nccu after they are born to be monitored - although I am sure these happen its not the norm. Once I had Rhyley they checked his sugar levels every 4 hours in the first 24 hours but since he was feeding fine they didn't test again till i left the home.
If you got anymore questions - ask away

you check your levels just before you eat and then generally an hour after (or two depending on what your doctor tells you to do) and you do it with the finger prick. basically you get a wee machine and a needle thing which you put on your finger and push the button, you cant see the needle or anything but it does sting a little. the you put the drops of blood onto the strip in the machine and it tells you your sugar levels. Only takes a minute but it can take a while to get used to doing it cos you know its gonna hurt!
With addison I couldnt control it with diet so had to go on insulin which wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.
She was induced 2 weeks early because of her size which is a common problem with GD, big babies. Kobe was 7lb 4oz (I think) and he was 6 weeks prem.
I used ot have to go to the hospital clinic every couple of weeks, had size scans every two weeks from about 30 weeks.

so if i have no traces of sugar or protein(which i haven't so far but go again today) then the test is just at 28 weeks? otherwise if she finds some I have to get tested early...? and if i fail do the longer test? and then if i fail that go on either specialist diet or insulin? is that how it works?

kind of. if there are no reasons to think you are at risk for GD then you just get the normal test at 28 weeks (which i didnt have with kobe as my midwife said not to bother...silly woman) anyway if that comes back high then you do the second two hour test and if that comes back high then you start testing your levels (finger prick) and all that. Normally its controlled with diet but if your levels are still to high then you may need insulin.
Chch womens diabetes nurses and everyone are really nice. You basically see them aswell as your midwife so you can end up seeing heaps of people. I had either appointments or scans every week which was a mission

OH and as for food, well its just a healthy diet really. I found it hard because when your pregnant your not suppose to have diet food (with that fake sugar stuff) yet they tell you to have that when you have GD so i just avoided sugary things when possible. wholemeal foods, rice, bread etc... plus limit fruit cos thats high in sugar. it is hard knowing what to eat, i lost weight because I was so careful about what i was eating but didnt really help cos i ended up on insulin anyway!

Unless you have risk factors (family history of diabetes, overweight, had GD in previous pregnancies, had a baby over 4kg, pregnant with multiples or sugar in urine) you don't have to have the 28 week Polycose screening test. If you do have one or more risk factors they do the 28-week screening test and then if that is high you do the 2 hour GTT.

yeah but my midwife didnt think i was at risk, no family history etc... yeah i was a bit overweight but not majorly when i was pregnant with kobe. Some midwives will do it routinely and others only if there are is a possibility you could have it. As with everything you dont have to do it if you dont want to but the pros outweigh the cons (in my opinion)

Yeah I thought it was just a routine test at 28ish weeks, did it with Hannah. I dont mind the drink too much, but apparently the second one is a bit stronger. I'm just worried about how hungry I will be - 12 hours fasting overnight isnt so bad but the sitting at the lab for 2 hours waiting for the blood test I will be one hungry pregnant lady!!
Thanks for all your help ladies, will let you know how I get on.

I did the two tests as my first one was over the normal range of 8 or whatever it is. Second one came back totally normal, and I wonder if the fact that I'd not eaten anything before the first test had something to do with the first abnormal result.
A friend of mine had GD and she was induced at 37 weeks. I think it's quite common, and apart from being quite strict with your diet it's not too much of an issue.
Hope you are doing ok Aimee

sorry Amy - I did the finger test first thing in morn, 1 hour after food and two hours after food - thats main meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fingers looked like a pin cushon in the end.

My first test came back really high but the second one was fine and Charlotte was bigger than her dates said. She ended up being 8lb9 which in my family is about right.
If you are worried, just try to limit your sugar intakes, I was drinking things like Fanta and not worrying about it but after the tests, I switched to things like flavoured tonic water which has much lower sugar levels. Water is best but I hate it!
