Im thinking about maybe having a water birth seen as i already have the spa booked at the annex but would love to hear from those who have had water births and how it went for you,
* also are you allowed any type of pain releif when having a WB (i know NO epidurals of course),
* whether you have to get out after bubs to deliver placenta or just do that in the spa????
* What was it like dealing with the pain in the water???
* Did your MW get in the pool with you??
* Did your DH/DP get in the pool with you???

Basically any and all infomation on water births and how your went...

Thanks

I didn't have the waterbirh I wanted as things happened. But I was able to labour in the bath. My MW was next to me the whole time and DH when he was in the bathroom was on the other side. I had a shot of peth about 30 minutes before I got in the bath. The pain was a lot easier to deal with being in the water. If you want to know what stopped me from having the water birth PM and i'll let you know.

You have have entonox(gas) while in the pool. I was planning a water bith, and was in the pool a little bit having gas.
They wont let you in the pool until they have monitored the baby and every thing is perfect.
You may also have to get out to be monitored.
When we were planning a WB my mw said I wouldnt be able to deliver the plancenta in the pool, so that would prob be same for you as same hosp etc.

Does Alan still have his hand in cast?!

As Kellz has mentioned, you are allowed gas whilst in the pool, I had a couple puffs on this right towards the end - but you have to stop using it once you start pushing.

I delivered the placenta while I was in the pool, but they drained all the water first.

Dealing with the pain whilst in the water was fantastic, more support for my muscles, warm water is just generally nice and relaxing and also soothing.

There wasn't *really* any room in the pool for anyone else, although it wouldn't have been impossible - just cramped. I wanted as much room as I could get !

As for other stuff I can think of, there isn't a lot - had to wait until I had progressed to about 5-6cm before they let me hop in, but when I did it was the absolute best.

Edit: I know you might possibly know this already, but if bubs head comes out first they will still be fine - Erin's head came with the first couple of pushes, and then the rest of her body after a couple more, then straight up out of the water and onto me for skin to skin.

With Jack I was in the pool the whole time and I think I coped a bit better than with Caprece where I got in about an hour before she was born.

As others have said you are allowed gas and I assume pethidene as well. They used the doppler thing under the water and examined me in the water as well.

Placenta was delivered while I was still in bath but with the water drained out.

I liked being in the bath cos its really easy to get into any position to deliver bubs. Noone was in the pool with me.

No one was in the pool with me and I got in 45 mins before Brenna was born (would have been sooner, but we were at home FAR too long). I delivered the placenta out of the bath - sat on the loo I found the water to be really good for the pain. So much so that we were all quite relaxed and joking around. If possible, I'm definatley going to have a WB next time

I had a waterbirth and I would recommend it to all!

I got into the pool 30 mins before Lucy was born. I didn't have time to have any gas (so had NO pain relief at all!!) as I was fully dilated and my midwife could see the head. I really went into the pool to ease some of my contractions, but decided to birth in the pool as I was already in there.

My hubby was at my side the whole time, not in the pool.

I birthed half on my placenta in the pool, then had to be rushed to CHCH Womans in the Ambulance as I had a retained placenta and lost over 3 litres of blood!

Apart from that, Waterbirths are amazing!

I am also thinking of a water birth or at least labouring in the pool so this is really interesting. But did you wear anything on top or just starkers????

I started out wearing a singlet but ripped it off half way through, so I birthed naked wth a sheet over me.

I wore a hospital gown whilst wandering around the delivery suite, and then starkers whilst in the pool - was quite warm and couldn't stand having anything extra on me.

Baysmum - No offense intended since I don't know your hubby, but it sounds like he needs a good kick up the bum !!

I wore a hospital gown, but should have been starkers, as it was clingy and I wanted to rip the thing off!

I'm not sure about other pain relief but I know you can have gas.

I was in the pool by myself holding onto the side of the pool and DH. My midwife stayed close to the pool and monitored me under the water with the doppler. I didn't get in until I was 8cm and half and hour later I started pushing. I found being in the pool wonderful for helping get into positions. I was kneeling while pushing then when her head was half out I decided I wanted to be sitting (I have no idea why) I was able to change positions by myself really quickly. I found dealing with the contractions way easier in the water and I think the water helped me to not tear

I hopped out and onto the hospital bed to deliver the placenta

I wore a longer type singlet, just long enough to cover my bits but not too long that it would have been annoying

hehe i was such a prude when it came to these things when having Bay and got all uptight when the MW or doctor had to look up my wazoo!! but that dignity went out the window after a short while!! lol and although i feel a little weird about going naked im thinking it would be nice to have direct skin to skin contact with bubs as soon as hes born without having to hoick up my shirt or nighty! ..i didnt get the skin to skin contact with Bay and really regret it! plus i also think that having clothes on in the water will make me feel worse with the heavy weight!! and i will chuck clothes on when ever im out of the pool so as not to scare the rest of the nation in the birthing ward! lol

I don't like being stark naked when I deliver and it's been three times now for me LOL. Even when I wear the hospital gowns I wear a (maternity) bra underneath and sometimes a t-shirt as well. Who cares if it all gets wet, there's heaps of gowns available and they even get washed for free So that's the way to go if you're uncomfy being naked... well, naked with an audience.

Baysmum, tell your MW you'd like to labour in the pool and trial labour there also. Tell your DH you want to labour in the pool and you'll decide on the day what to do next!
