Hi,
I have just found out i am pregnant, unsure how far (im thinking around 6weeks) but have Dr. appointment this morning to confirm.
Anyway to my question, I have my nipple pierced and am wondering if it will affect me breastfeeding my baby, i know im going to have to take it out, but was just worried about scar tissue causing problems.
Has anyone else had any problems like this?

Congrats on your pregnancy!

You will have to take it out if you plan to breastfeed, I guess the sooner the better. Give it time to heal!

I had my nipple pierced and it made no difference to my ability to breastfeed, the only difference was that my milk was super fast as it had extra holes to go thru! I had masses of scar tissue too, as I had it done more than once!

Good luck!
Anna

What about Belly buttons - I know that most peoples belly buttons stick out - does that mean I will lose my piercing?

I didn't have to remove my belly button piercing, but I had to get a different kind of belly button bar, one that was longer than normal and flexible of course - I put my normal one back in probably 2-3 months after Erin was born.

As for my nipple piercing, definitely had to take that out, but didn't seem to affect breastfeeding when we were still doing that (bottle fed now), I don't imagine it would pose you any problems - although I agree with Anna in that the sooner you take it out the longer it will have to heal.

I have already taken my belly button ring out, I was finding it annoying already (after not noticing it for 8 years....!!) Felt so much better as soon as it was out. Spoke to my piercer and he said that most people take theirs out by 20 weeks at the latest as they just get uncomfortable, but its differnet for everyone I guess. He did say that I should be able to put it back in once the baby is born if I wanted to....not sure yet!!

Yep I took my belly button ring out at about 18 weeks preg, and got it in again with no probs at all when I got home from hospital (3 days after having Isla). I didnt think I would be able to get it back in since I had never had it out before at all, so was very glad that it was so easy!

www.mummymaternity.co.nz has special belly button bars for when your pregnant. They are flexable and mean you can keep your piercing while you are pregnant. I havn't used them, as I took my piercings out when I got pregnant with Alex, but they look good.

I have one of those Mammamaternity belly bars. its been real good so far & i forget I have it in its just more flexable and only $30 odd (or was it 20 I cant remember with my preggy brain) from trademe. Mines a blue heart. Havent had my belly button pop out yet so will see how it goes but i love my pearcing heaps so would be sad to see it go. My SIL on the other hand couldnt put hers back in cause it stretched so bad so yeah

I took my nipple ring out at 12 weeks cos it was hurting due to nips growing but i have read that you can actually breast feed with it still in. I found my pierced side was Jacks least favourite and so it made less milk.

I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens - I suppose every situation is different! I'm not too fussed if I have to take out my Belly bar - I can always get it redone later on!

Hmmm, this is something I've been thinking about lately.

Emachan, congrats on your new baby! What did you decide to do?

I'm wondering whether its worth getting one of those flexi bars or just taking it out? (I don't know whether I'd want to bare my stomach for quite a while after baby lol)
But if I took it out, would the holes just stretch and become all misshapen?    I hope not!

Just curious, what did people choose to do (I see that most of the replies on this thread have babies now )?

I took my belly button ring out about half way through about 25 weeks I think- once my belly got so tight thatmy belly betton was flattened out and where the peicring went it was beginning to be sore. I left it out the rest of pregnancy and put it back in when Isla was 3 days old. Went back in fine!

I changed my belly piercing to a bar one (had a ring one in) at maybe 1/2 way through, but when my belly button started stretching even more I took it out altogether. I did put it back in for a few hours every couple of days (as mine tends to heal over very quickly - even though I've had it for 10 years!). I did find afterwards it was quite hard to get back in, but just persisted!
