Does anyone have one? Is it worth the money and do you really end up not spending very much extra on heating? The guy just told me that I might only need to use my wood burner on the odd winters day because the HRV system is so great.

We have a moistermaster, not a HRV, but even this has been great.
We have a wood burner and the reduction in condensation and moisture from the moisture master means that the wood burner can heat the house in winter. We love having it.

We've got one and the lack of condensation is great. But I find it's still cold and I need a heater in winter, but we probably stopped using one earlier than usual and maybe started later - and put it on later in the evening? But it's not like having a heat pump, which is kind of what I was thinking.
Plus the extra bonus is lack of hot sticky nights. It's still hot during the day but I don't find we have those horrible hot restless nights. I think I've had only one like that so far this summer.

interesting eh? This guy very clearly said that I would not need to heat the house using anything else. They are very pushy too. I've been trying to get rid of them for ages but they just keep calling - which is why I finally gave in and let them come and give me the spiel.

The biggest value in HRV is to reduce condensation.
That helps with heating but unless they are taking heat directly from your fireplace and pumping it into other rooms, you will still need to heat your house in some way.

We have a moistermaster (i think thats what it is!) Its great, no condensation and it has a heater in, it doesnt make the house hot but it does take that chill out of the air so is great for the not so cold days. Plus we have a big fire place for the size of our house and the heat transfer takes the heat for our lounge down to the bedrooms

My parents have an HRV system. It's great for condensation, but we DEFINITELY still need the fire/heaters on in winter (we're in Wellington). The house only gets heated up when the sun shines, so if it doesn't get warm up in the roof, the house stays cold.

I found this too, and in fact it put me off them completely.

we got our HRV purely to reduce condensation. I did find last winter it took less to heat the house but that was for 2 adults who dont feel the cold, will prob be different this winter with an infant...
also they claim in cools your house at night in summer, we have never had this. We have a 60's weatherboard house with corrugated iron roof and some nights the roof cavity doesnt get below 25 degrees so isnt going to cool the house is it??

well I definitely won't be installing one based on their lack of customer service! The guy turned up randomly this evening (he only gave me a quote this afternoon) while I was clearly working and continued to knock on doors until I finally opened one. He had come round to tell me they wanted to offer me a special discount of $3 a week. I can't believe how pushy they are - I just found the random turning up pretty dodgy.

Their sales guys are commission paid, so perhaps the guy you got is really skint!
Is a shame you got such a dodgy guy, we were never told that we wouldn't need to use any other heating, just that it should reduce the amount of heating that we need to use and that has been true. We got ours for reducing condensation and making the house healthier not for heating.
sandie we have found that as well when it's been really hot it's still too hot in the roof even during the middle of the night for it to cool the house down, it works on days that aren't ridiculously hot though. We are summerhill stone and tin roof.

That's interesting cuppatea - this guy repeated several times that they are not paid on commission!! He also hasn't given me a written quote but has tried pretty hard to get me to commit. It's the turning up unannounced that really gets me though. Not impressive at all.

well this ad says differently

would seem your guy was very dodgy indeed.
Phone the main office in your area and make a complaint about him, I'm sure they actually don't want their sales people harrassing homeowners. Bad word of mouth is not exactly great for business is it?

Me too - won't ever use them as they called several times within the same year, each time been told 'no thanks' and each time won't take no for an answer and got snarky when I told them to quit it...grrr

Good idea to phone them. They are commission-based. Also the HRV advertising specifically states that they are not for heating, just air-circulating.
We had one at our last place. It didn't improve the sale value by that much, I don't think. But I did enjoy it while we were there. It reduced how much we needed to use the heater - basically extended the warm months and shortened winter. But on cold, rainy days we definitely still needed to put the heater on.
It is rather expensive though
ETA: See this - there is mention at the bottom of suggestive additional heating.

They DO NOT replace heating, that is an outright lie.
All they do is circulate air around your home, that's it. They help reduce condensation because the moisture can't settle which does make your home easier to heat, but certainly doesn't replace other forms of heating.
They're very expensive for what they are, essentially fans and vents....

Ok so I finally found the courage to call. I felt really mean - according to the franchise owner it is the guys first week. But they did confirm the fact that it is not a heating system as such so I pointed out that he had told me I definitely wouldn't need to heat my house using any other method.
Anyway, all dealt with now - I'm glad I made the call even though I always feel dreadful giving negative feedback like that!

We have one but were told it was simply for condensation only which was a huge problem for us (to the point of mould and rot on the windowsills from water puddles!). They don't heat your house imo but does have a temp gauge and it does suck the air from the roof down into the rooms... So I suppose it does heat to a degree if I put my hand under but not enough if that makes sense. We still need the heaters on. We don't notice any difference to our bill.
