...someone in your family named their daughter with almost exactly the same name as your own daughter. My cousin and his wife just had their baby a few days ago and she has the same middle name as Heidi and her name is Chloe so it sounds exactly the same. I am so so so happy for them but the name is almost a direct copy of Heidis name. I probably sound so silly and mean but I cant help being annoyed!

Thanks Mandz I am so glad that there is one person who would also be annoyed, it makes me feel a little less mean.

Oh and the middle name is not a commonly used middle name either GRRRRRR!!!!!

eeek. I'm on the other side of the fence, cause my favourite name has already been used by my hubby's cousin. I love Jack but there is a Jackson. but then i don't think i'm going to get it cause hubby isn't too fussed on it - because its the most popular boys name! oh well.
you could always look at it that they obviously think you have great taste in names?!?!?! hmmmm

It would depend on how close they were to us - I hardly see some of my cousins so it wouldn't bother me, but if I saw them all the time/had a close relationship with them it'd pee me off as well.

That said, friends of ours called their baby totally different names to JJ, but they call him JT for short, and that's close enough to tick me off slightly which I know is completely irrational but there you go!

I think I would be more annoyed with having the same first name lol middle name maybe not so much, was there a special family connection with the middle name? Like say a grandma's name or something like that iygwim?

ETA: Our girl is Lily Anne Maria, I'd have like Marie instead of Maria but there is already a girl cousin called Marie so we decided on Maria and it just so happened to be MIL middle name. Anne is my grandma's name and in our family all the girls have Anne or Annette as a middle name. Lily was just something with a special meaning to dp and I, however I know a couple of people who are expecting girls and have decided they wouldn't mind Lily for a first name, I am a little bothered by it, but as I prob won't be seeing them much, I don't really mind!

No special connection with the middle name, but we chose it because it was unique in that it was not a family name, and I put alot of thought into it and how it sounded. If the first names did not sound so alike I would be less annoyed but the names sound so the same!

Sorry I am kind of on both sides of the fence . When I was pg with Ben I had Bella picked as my girl's name. Bro and SIL had their little girl 7wks before I had Ben and they named their DD Ella, I was home alone when I got the text to say she was born and I have to say I burst into tears as I was so upset that it was almost identical to my pick, I was sure I had told them I liked the name Bella but they had never told anyone their choices for names.

I really want to have #3 and try for a girl and I still love the name Bella so not sure what I would do since we see so much of eachother.
So I suppose I can understand both sides
Lindsey

I don't know about the middle name - that would probably upset me especially if it's quite unique or it seemed likely they stole it...

But Chloe and Heidi are completely different names!

Oh don't get me wrong I know the names are completely different they just sound the same as in 2 syllables ending with an E sound and then said with the middle name its sounds like the same name. I am just a stickler for originality and ever since I was little I have had a issue when people have copied me especially when its obvious and I always make a point too not ever copy anyone else......my problem I guess, and me being me I will be over it next week, but at the moment I am peeved!

If we all had to have completely different sounding names, we'd all be nameless!
our girl is being named Lily - theres TONNES of Lily's out there but who cares! Its a lovely name!
unless you're my grandmother who when told what we are calling her, she said 'What a bloody horrible name.' Go Nan :P

It wouldn't bother me, it's only a middle name and I'm with the others, Chloe and Heidi are completely different. Besides people never refer to children by their whole name anyway, it's not like they'll be Heidi Grace and Chloe Grace (I know Grace won't be the name, it was just an example) they'll just be Heidi and Chloe.

But because it is bothering you and that sucks!

No I don't think it would bother me too much personally.
As others have said, it isn't like they're going to be called by that name. I doubt that most of my friends even know what my middle name is!

Plus, it really sucks when you love a name and feel like you can't use it because there is someone close to you who has used it for their child.
DH and I have A LOT of trouble choosing boys names and there is only one that we both like so far for this baby.
Family friends have just named their son that name and we were like "Congratulations!! (darn it!!!!)"
I think we'll keep it on the list though, it just isn't worth making it harder and giving up the name we both like just in case it annoys them a little.
The kids won't be bothered by it!

Chloe and Heidi sound completely different and IMHO third cousins sharing a middle name is not that big a deal.

My nephew is called Chirstopher which was my favourite boys name. Caleb would be Christopher if it wasn't already 'gone'. We named Caleb not knowing my nephew and his partner were pregnant and it was there prefered name, but they had a girl so it wasn't that big a deal.

Within my cousins there are a lot of children with same names as the wider family, but we don't see enough of each other for it to be a big deal.

Thanks for all the replies, now knowing that lots of people don't think it sounds the same actually makes me feel better about it. We are all quite close so the girls will be like cousins but at the end of the day as you have all said its only the middle name.......nothing like OB to get a bit of perspective THANKS again

My brother named his daughter Sophie and a couple of months later our cousin named her daughter Sophia.      Now that's what I call similar sounding first names . It didn't worry him though as we don't see them often.

I wouldn't worry about it as no one worries about middle names much . I also think your daughter has the lovelier first name

Well, we don't know what sex baby we are having, and we have slowly started on a "short list" for each sex... One of the names on our boy list is pretty similar to the name of my cousins wee boy (similar to the sophie/sophia thing- but not QUITE that similar)
BUT before long, we are going to ask their permission and say "look we know its similar but would you mind..." If they say they don't want such a similar name thats fine, if they aren't worried thats awesome-it can stay on the list-theres a chance we wont even use the name!

Problem is, its KINDA a family name (their spelling is, ours isn't, its "foreign" spelling and pronunciation but still quite similar) so dunno where we'll go from there.

Also, one of the girls names I'm in love with, a friend has her daughter named that... Well she isn't so much a close friend, we don't see each other often. But if DH agrees on the name, we'll ask permission first!!
