So, I was looking in the "Breastfeeding History and Myths" section, and came across this piece:

It is painful: Once breast feeding is established some mothers describe feeding as pleasurable. Often the let down reflex may not work but this is usually due to stress. Cracked nipples are a result of not toughening the nipples before feeding

Now, I'm not an expert, but when I did breastfeeding classes, they said that that type of thinking was a bit old fashioned, and that you usually only get cracked nipples from incorrect latching.

If so, how can this be changed, as women will be looking at this site hoping to get accurate info...

Kathamill, I'm just curious as to which part of the quote is "wrong".   From my experience, it is painful to start with, let down would only happen when I relax, and once my nipples toughened up (from feeding) I havn't had cracked nipples since....

I'm aware that cracked nipples can also be caused by incorrect latching, but sometimes they crack when you're doing it right too!

Edited to add - we of the forum are just mums, giving our advice to other mums. I don't think anybody should use the internet in place of a real, live expert, if you're having problems, please see a lactation consultant or the le leche league or other expert.

sorry! I completely realise that I wrote that not very well and how you could read it that way.

I only meant the bit about not toughening up the nipples causes them to crack.

I know of at least one person that gets cracked nipples and latch really well!

I don't think its wrong as such but maybe worded a little weird??? I didn't find BF at all painful so the "it is painful" part was wrong in my case

I never found BF painful either. I surely did NOT toughen up my nipples, and they never cracked.
Maybe I'm just lucky

Mine cracked only after using an electric pump after 12 weeks of feeding, had nothing to do with correct/incorrect latching

I did manage to get a small blood blister from having a shallow latcher though... hooray for nipple shields lol!

My nipples got cracked for the first week but then healed up once my milk came in proberly.

Just a funny story that my nana told me about when she was first pregnant.

She had been told to use meths to toughen up her nipples so started using what she thought was meths a few weeks before giving birth. When she had her baby they were wondering why on earth no milk was coming out and then realised that she had actually been putting on bike tire sealant . (the stuff they used to fix leaks)

Yep, I have a plan, don't worry! I haven't had as much time as I'd like to work on the site as I've been helping out with the magazine while Ellie's on maternity leave (multi-talented lot we are ), but she's coming back soon...

My workmate told me to scrub my nipples with a goldilocks (kitchen scrubber) and sunbathe nude to toughen them up. Glad I didn't listen to that old wives tale

o phew, I had heard one story about a women who was told to scrub her nipples with a toothbrush and meths. but goldilocks!!!!

Sorry if my first post was a bit rambly / misleading.

Its just I love this site, and wanted to see what was said about breastfeeding... and was a bit miffed when I saw that particular sentence.

I think its the word "toughen" that is misleading. My understanding is the old fashioned method of meths, sunlight, goldilocks, whatever else is unecessary but that the nipples are often painful unitl they get "toughened" up by bubs feeding. But they dont actually get tough do they...whats a better word? Conditioned? There is definitely something that changes....I'd even go so far as to ask if they get a little desensitised? Anyone else notice that? TMI...but they dont seem to have so many other uses now. or will that improve once James leaves home (because at this rate, I cant see the kid EVER giving up the boob....sigh)

LOL Nikki, I was wondering the same thing. DH sees them so much these days with a kidlet attached they seem to have lost their appeal

Yup i would use the word desensitised in place of toughened.
