 Topic: Finishing work early...

I am thinking I may need to finish work earlier than expected, as I can barely walk because of my pelvis. I have a belt from the physio, and exercises, but it's still extremely painful to walk. For anyone that had to finish work early, did you get any help from WINZ and do you know what it's restricted by??
I just don't know if I can do this for much longer

I'm pretty sure you can go on the sickness benefit. You poor thing I had really bad back pain and had a smiley belt too, I found it hard enough and I only had one baby in there. Don't try to be superwoman, you do need to look after yourself

there are some conditions i think your mw has to recommend you for it etc? i left work early but didn't qualify:( but you sound like you would..I would ask mw (and WINZ)

From what i have seen on the WINZ website you basically need a medical certificate to say you are not able to work for the rest of your pregnancy. I guess that can come from your midwife or a doctor but i would double check with WINZ. Rest up Chicky!!

I don't think I'll have a problem getting a medical certificate after spending Friday afternoon in the maternity unit and then having physio yesterday....I think it's more whether I will even qualify, as DH is on ACC so gets an income, even though it only just covers our mortgage.

I think you need to be 27 weeks to get the sickness benefit, well thats what I got told anyway. But if you get a med cert, you'll probably be able to get it from now.

I have an appt. with WINZ tomorrow to see if I can get it. I think it is from 28 weeks if you are simply pregnant, but if you have something else that is stopping you from working(sounds like you do) then it can be earlier. I just have a general med cert from GP, saying how pregnant I am and that I can't work. I think the partner needs to earn no more than $500 per week before tax to get in full. I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.....DF is self emplyed, so it's a bit more confusing for us as he has no set income.

I left work for medical reasons at 20 weeks- was told I had to by Ob. I wasnt told I was entitled to anything. My work did pay for 9 weeks sickpay which was really nice of them, then I went onto my 12 weeks maternity pay, then nothing after that.

Well I rang WINZ and I don't qualify for a sickness benefit, because DH is on ACC so they deduct $1 for $1 received from ACC - I'm not sure why this is different to work, as it's not really his fault he had a work accident and therefore can't work at the moment . We can qualify for temporary additional support though as well as the accommodation supplement...this is better than nothing. DH and I will decide what to do tonight I think.

I went to find out about the sickness benefit and I didn't qualify. If you have a partner they take $1 for every 80c they earn over some amount I can't remember what now but DP earned too much basically.
We qualified for about $42 off accommodation supplement with just his income but qualify for nothing when I am working even though I was only working casually and that varied week to week and I had three weeks without working.
Are you able to go on shorter hours and light work for awhile? Our office manager went on shorter hours she did a full day mon then worked 8.30-3 rest of the week and I would step in from 3pm. Some days she would go earlier and that was fine as I was there to step in as I was taking the role over when she was on maternity leave anyways

The sickness benefit amount I believe is they dock 70c for every $1 over $80. I can't see us affording anything either.

Oh the sickness benefit is a freaking joke. Like said above, 70c for every dollar eant- above $80. Yuo are not missing much Kate! And they take into account holiday pay.

Because DH is on ACC, they actually take $1 for each $1 - I have no idea why it is so different!!! At this stage, it looks like I will just finish up work on 3rd July - my boss is being pretty good with easing up on me and my workmates are as well. I am still working full days, but next week I have two days off for exams, so working 3 days, then a full 5 day week the following week then that's it - I'm finished. As DH pointed out - I can't do anything at home either, so why not get paid for doing it. He is dropping me off to work every day and picking me up as I can't drive anymore It is a bit of a joke how they work it though.

Sorry to hear you are in a lot of pain, and I hope you guys will be ok financially.
I'd be interested to hear if you can get paid parental leave when you finish up early - the info on the DOL website says you have to work up until "immediately before your due date".

I don't think you can DJ, from what I have read. The earliest you can start it (as far as I'm aware) is 6 weeks before the due date. Mine is starting when I am (or should be) 36w. They do say you can get the sickness benefit but it's a joke really.

oh I think you can get maternity leave early if your mw says that you need to finish work early for health reasons. Ask her or ring department of labour they maybe able to help

Kate you chould be able to get your PPL early as you can't physically work because of the stress on your body. You MW may know who to talk to about getting it early.
Can you go down to reduced hours for a few weeks?? I did that when pregnant with Andrew as my MW told me I had to (or give up completely) and went down to 6 hours a day which helped as I could rest more. Even if you can do that for a few weeks That might get your to 30 weeks when you could give up work at get your PPL from IRD.
