A question to all you out there who are BF and trying to lose/have lost weight. I heard from my antenatal class instructor that when BF the weight will just come off. Well, only a bit has come off - have tried starting exercising and eating healthy again (exercise put on hold cuz my bike has gone kaput). I met this woman who had BF for 20 months and couldn't lose much weight and once she quit, the weight just fell off. Jealous...

My question is how did you end up losing the weight..and did it work while you were BF exclusively or giving solids? Does it really just come off once you put an end to BF?

Also another question..not related..but my son has a bit of flat head and just wondering when this will go away. It's not that bad and I'm giving him lots of tummy time now that he seems to enjoy it more :) Yay!

Hey there, I am BF and like you the weight isn't falling off like everyone said it will... dam it! No hints and tips but I didn't want to read and run!

I will keep looking cause if there are hints then I can try them out... I know what doesn't work to lose weght and that is dark chocolate, coke and ready salted chippies (I have to be dairy free for my daughter otherwise there would be loads of cheese added to the list).

Re the flat head, we use a wedge that you can buy from baby shops for about $20, they keep baby sleeping on their side and they can't roll forward, we alternate which side she sleeps on each sleep. Sleep Wedge

Yeah the weight didnt fall off me either .. I had to resort to wait for it .. excercise lol

Unfortunately you also cant really diet whilst bf as you need the extra calories to sustain yourself and your milk flow, but eating sensibly and moving more will help.

Just remember it took nine months for you to put that extra weight on .. its not going to miraculously fall off overnight

There is a weight loss thread in the general section should you guys wish to get some more motivation.

Oh yes, the old 'weight will drop when breastfeeding' line. Ha. Just another thing people tell you, like 'pregnancy increases your libido' .

I'm in the same boat, if I exercise or diet it affects my milk. So I am just trying to eat as healthy as I can and do my best to avoid chocolate and chips lol

I lost a few kilos while breastfeeding in the first 6 weeks or so, then it sort of plateaud (sp!)

When Jackson was about 4 months old I decided to do something, and started eating healthily and exercising moderately. I was mindful of the extra calorie intake I needed for BF so was careful not to go under. I managed to lose about 3kgs over 2.5 months I think.

Once Jackson was 6-7 mos old I weaned and the weight did drop off after that, I wasnt half as hungry as I used to be. But I had also upped my exercise intensity and decreased my calorie intake. Lost about 10.5kgs in total in the end.

I think WW do a breastfeeding mums plan, that may be a good start?

I didn't loose weight while I was BF - in fact I was opposite - I gained it! I was just ate and ate and ate (maybe from the breastfeeding and needing the food but probably from the fact I was home so much and just munched out alot).

I did loose all (20kgs) pretty quickly once I started back at work - I tend to loose weight when I am working (kinda ironic as I am a chef), I think work speeds my metabolism up - being busy and maybe the tasting food all the time but not really eating.

I am afraid patience is a virtue, for some it drops off quickly, others it takes more time. Some loose weight whilst BF, others don't. Don't worry it will happen, Lilfatty took the words right out of my mouth - it does take 9 months to put the weight on..........

Oh and re: Flat head - try keeping him off the back of his head whilst sleeping, ie, put him down with head to one side, and as much time off his back whilst awake will help. If you are really concerned talk to your doc or plunket nurse.

Bummer!! I've been duped! Does it come off a little easier once you finish BF? I'm gonna have to try that wedge.

My son usually doesn't sleep with his head to the left. I tried quite a few tricks. Moving his bassinette, switching sides of the bed he sleeps on. Putting him on his side (and he puts his head so he's facing the ceiling). Put pictures on one side of the bed. I rolled blankets behind him and he'll somehow look to his right or straight up. I would even try and come in while he was sleeping and give him the switcheroo. It'd work...for about 1 min...then he'd wake up (prolly felt uncomfortable) and return to his old position. He's got this sweet spot he likes. I keep telling the dr and the asst. but they just brush it off..so I'm hoping the wedge will help and that this will go away in time. thanks guys. :)

At the risk of being cyber-beaten, the weight has fallen off me while BF... but my theory is actually that it's a combined effect because I haven't gone back on the pill or mini pill. I was naturally slim as a teenager until I went on the pill then I packed on the weight. I haven't really tried to lose weight (although I am exercising, but that's about fitness, and the weight was falling off before I started that part of it) and I'm more than 10kg lighter than I was when I got pregnant.

So I'm putting off going back on the pill, much as I hate the alternative... although that has its own risks, as a few people on here can attest...!

I got given that sleep wedge & it's brillant! I initally thought why the hell would I use that but it does work. I wrap as well so he can't move

I'm one of those Biarches that loses weight while B/Fing. Although this time it seems to be taking longer, I am much hungrier this time around though & probably more concious of the weight.

It does take a while cause you need that fat to help sustain for the length that you b/f.

Have a 19 month gap between kids then you don't have time to eat

If he really doesn't want to turn his head one way then it might pay to take him along to a chiro or osteo just to have his neck checked out. The flat spot will normally correct once they are sitting and crawling and so forth unless it is really bad, but then if it was the doc or plunket would be concerned about it.

I went on the weight watchers breastfeeding plan while still b/f my DD and lost all my weight quite fast! I ate a huge amount of food to keep up good quality milk and was lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight within 5 months of having DD.

I totally recommend going the Weight Watchers route and of course exercising    Weight Watchers provided me with heaps of info on how to maintain a good milk supply etc while dieting

Well I put on weight since BF, all I do now is eat healthly snacks inbetween meals and go to the gym and I have only lost about 1/2 a kg.

I will tell anyone that the "BF will make your weight fall off" line is a lie lol.

Just keep eating healthy and everything will prob change when you stop BF.

I don't think my baby weight would have "dropped off" if I'd kept breastfeeding, because when I breastfed I was super hungry and pigged out all the time LOL! I probably gained more weight in the time I was breastfeeding hehe

After having Caden I went back to 60kg within a few weeks(was 71kg full term with him), and I stayed at that weight for months, I think I'm just over 61kg now, and thats at 6 months pregnant.

I put on 6kgs while preg though was on the overweight side to start with, by week 3 post birth I was 6kgs lighter than when I fell pregnant but in about a month I gained all that back and have been fluttering around my pre preg weight since Hayden was born. So while the baby weight wasnt an issue I'm back where I started but with a horrid mummy tummy, my shape is very different now and everything wobbles!!!!

I've started the WW points plan with the extra points for BFing a baby who also has solids, its an extra 5 points a day apparently but its too much food I cant eat it all especially with a clingy 9mth old in tow. So I'm doing the best I can and not eating the norty stuff that I was eating before. I've written up 3 days of meal plans with the points already worked out and I'll just rotate those 3 days over and over. Its pretty easy really but you have to find a point of motivation and keep it in your head - mine is the fact my Mum is wearing a pair of my jeans that I cant fit and my new cargo shorts literally fell off her in the weekend and are tight on my belly, I refuse to have my Mum skinnier than me lol!!!!!!

I gained 20kg during my pregnancy and was losing it fairly steadily until about 2 months ago when I just plateaued ... unfortunately I'm still a good 5kgs from my pre-preg weight...

I was working on the "9 months up, 9 months down" philosophy but running out of time now!! might have to break out the exercise gear

now winter is approaching and it's more likely that I'll pack on cuz it's cold. with the WW bf plan...how does it go? Do you do meetings or what? How is it when you've got a kid? Do you have an exercise regimen? I dunno nething bout this!

grrr.weight go away!!

oh and who ever ''owns'' Arianne is lucky cuz she's soooo beautiful in those pics! Must have been a prof photographer!
