Topic: Best Ever Purchase (and BF Chairs) Posted: 19 March 2009 at 9:40pm |
Gidday Folks,
Just a couple of questions for you 'old hands'...
What has been the one item that you have said "I'm so glad we bought....."? We have lists of items required but alot of the time there are still things that you (yes, you) think I.JUST.COULDN'T.HAVE.DONE.WITHOUT....... So what's yours?
Also....
We are thinking about getting a breastfeeding chair. Whilst money is always an issue, because our house is quite cold and baby is due in June, I don't want to take him into another room to feed (once he's in his own room). In your opinion, is a rocking chair the best option (as long as it's comfy) or just a really comfortable chair? It's hard to find something secondhand that is really comfy AND rocks..... So what's it to be?
Thanks people and hopefully I've not replicated questions that have already been posted......

While I love my rocking chair i found I prefer not to rock when feeding at night. We found ours on TM and we have not looked back....really handy to have in the room.
One of our best buys would have to have been the sleeping bag...she is such a wriggler but i know she will not get cold from wriggling out from under the covers. LOL i have to say the cloth nappies also and the cheeky wipes for her bottom sanitisation. Toys wise we love the Mary Lou teething toy and the mutitude of mats to put on the floor to protect the carpet from spew stains.
Good luck with your chair

I got a lazy boy chair off Trade Me for $70 which I have been using for breastfeeding our normal lounge chairs just aren't suitable/comfortable for feeding.

One of my favorite items for the cot is the Fisher & Price Fish Aquarium - it plays for about 18 minutes (sounds or sound and movement options, or light) we also have a normal mobile but it only plays for about 2 minutes, so I like the other one as bubs normally drops of before it stops playing and it gives her longer to settle herself without us popping in every 2 minutes!
When she was born I used to fed in our bed (DH sleeps thru anything) cause it was warmer to do that, otherwise I just fed in the normal lounge chair, while a rocker would be good its probably not the best idea to do thru the night feds as bubs would probably get used to it and you have have problems settling later.
And the one thing I couldn't live without for going out is my Snap-and-Go, its great, takes less time to get bubs in and out of the car, easier to use than the normal bulkier pram, great to get into the boot of your car. You can hire them from Baby on the Move or purchase them.

My favourite chair in the house has got to be the old old lazy boy - it rocks, and reclines. In the first 6 weeks, I ended up asleep in it on a number of occasions. Unsettled baby, rocked to sleep, too scared to move, put the seat back and sleep where I am. I still like to BF in it now, and my DP likes to watch TV in it. Try the second hand shops, whatever chair you get will be covered in puke, drool, squirty milk etc.
On my so glad I have it list there is...
- my change table, DP made it for me, and after a c-section bending over to change nappies was not an option. And it's just so much easier on our backs. And great for storage.
- my mp3 player. How is this baby related? Whenever I got frazzled I'd chuck on the headphones, pop baby in the pram, and go for a walk. La lala, can't hear the screaming!! Saved my sanity!
There's other stuff to, but these are the two things that I LOVE in my life as a mummy.

We got one of the Baby Factory BF chairs off TradeMe. Was great! However, now Jackson is bigger he kicks it heaps while feeding. But I guess he'd do that to any chair.
My favourite purchases were:
- Merino Wrap (great for swaddling, lovely, warm and breathable)
- Hammock (J settled SO well in it)
- Door clamp for hammock - so it was portable!

We *had* a nursing chair, which broke on us last week
I fed in it a few times during the first weeks, but then preferred to feed lying down or wherever really.
Rocking in it really helped us to settle bubs and it also doubled as a super comfy computer chair, lol.
My fav baby things are
~swaddle (Kiddopotamus one with the velcro flaps, from Baby Factory),
~bouncer (the only way I get anything done while she is awake)
~ipod (for walks, like Flutterby, or plug into speakers in bubs room)
Okay, there is more, but i'm struggling to think..

In regards to a chair I had an old arm chair of my grandmothers that I could sit right back in and still have my feet flat on the ground, and this has worked fine for me although a foot stool would have been good as I tended to cross my legs to bring baby closer.
The things I could not have done without are:
- Miracle Blanket to swaddle baby really easily and they cannot escape from it (wish I had 2!!)
- White Noise CD - play it on repeat in babies room, this has made a huge difference in how long bub sleeps for
- The Baby Whisperer books - wish I had them before bub was born so that I was more prepared for baby and not just labour
- Fisher Price musical seahorse - plays for about 5 minutes and lights up plus not expensive like some mobiles. We use it a sleep cue for bub at night
- Tri pillow for feeding
All the best!

Oh and a swiss ball, we used this all the time to settle bubs, DH would hold her and bounce up and down. Most of the time we got instant silence!!!

just like to say in regards to the bf chair. We had a gorgeous rocking chair but the arms were to high and my bubs was too long so couldn't feed in it because i couldn't position him right. If i was looking for a breastfeeding chair now i would get a lazyboy type one with low arms that don't come up very high off the seat. Also its good if your feet can be flat on the ground when your sitting back - helps your posture.
The thing that i could not have done without was a sling. We got it quite late he was 4wks and i wish we'd had it from birth (before getting the sling we were using a front pack - majorly messed my back). We still use the sling now and because you can adjust it i can use it or my dh can use it too. BRILLIANT!!

Fedding chairs! With twins its a must have so you can have a baby in each one then sit in the middle and hold the bottles Too easy.
Dummys would be another lifesaver for us

Oh yes a dummy was our lifesaver!
Couldnt afford a fancy feeding chair, so I made do with the couch and a million pillows! Which was hard work after a c section and a feeding chair would have been great.
Lovely soft swaddle blankets, just the flannelte type.
A mobile, he loved watching it as he drifted off to sleep

Rocking chairs are lovely but not the most practical for breastfeeding. I would go with a big comfy arm chair with wide and low arms. You need to be able to rest your feet comfortably on the floor or have a foot rest too.
One of our best things was a breastfeeding pillow. Lots of flannelette wraps, a dummy, and a Hugabub (kind of like a mix between a sling and a front pack). The hugabub was a little $$ but so worth it, it is the only completely hands free sling/frontpack on the market and the most comfortable too.

We got our feeding chair off trade me for $16 and its our fav chair in the whole house and DH won't let me get rid of it.
My absolute favourite thing we have had for our babies has probably been our Angelcare monitor. I just wouldn't have been able to sleep without it and the knowledge that if baby stops breathing an alarm will sound just gives me the hugest peace of mind with all the stories you hear about people losing little ones to SIDS. It is the one thing I just couldn't have done without - esp in those very early days. Good luck!

Our leather couch was our lifesaver. Easy to wipe off all the spills (and we had lots of spills) and the 2 end seats recline too so like Flutterby I spent many a night on it with sleeping baby

I second the Angelcare monitor, it was the single best purchase ever!!! Best piece of mind you could have. Also love her Leapfrog baby tad, it plays 10 minutes of music and you can take it anywhere, she associates that music with sleep, and will sleep almost anywhere with it.

For me, its the dummy and the carrycot I got off Trademe for $20 - its a Valco fabric bag that he sleeps in ALL the time! He sleeps in the lounge during the day, then in our bedroom at night (he's too small for the cot, and won't settle properly in it yet). And it fits perfectly into our Milano 3-wheel stroller in the layback position. And his merino wrap is great - must get another one!

I got a chair from Farmers (on sale for $80) - it's got a curved wooden frame that is one piece of timber and has padded seat. Can't think of it's name but it looks like an IKEA chair. It doesn't rock but frame is bendy. Fits into the nursery no probs and I use it daily.
Best thing(s): change table, miracle blanket, hammock, go go bag, capsule with base and snap'n'go,decent sized rocker/bouncinette and baby einstein dvd.
