Topic: Climbing out of bed Posted: 18 May 2006 at 8:37pm |
OK, so have done away with the cot and am taking it home when I go in a couple of weeks.
She made an excellent transition to the bed. Wasn't phased at all to be out of the cot and was sleeping perfectly.... until.... *dum dum dummmm*
The little toad discovered she is now tall enough to open her door. So, now every time I put her to bed (day and night) she climbs out straight away. Again. And again. And again. Until I get fed up and lie down with her until she goes to sleep.
Now I just sit on her bed and generally she falls asleep within 15-20 minutes. (But that is 15-20 minutes of MY time - which I value very much)
Should I continue to sit with her, maybe moving further away from the bed until phasing it out? or should I get something to lock her door so she can't get out? or do any of you other mums have a magic trick I should try?!?

Hrmmm... might have to do that. That's what neighbours have done. Except she got locked inside her kid's room with the little monkey one day. Worst nightmare ever. So yeah, just gotta remember to have the handle somewhere inside the room for that eventuality!

i used to sit with my son for the day naps but night time was just being as persistent as he is. he is much better now but if he isnt really tired he will come out a couple of times before settling down. when she couldnt open the door would she go straight to sleep or play awhile? if she is used to playing that may be the problem. maybe a slighly later bedtime.

you can get child safety locks for most type of doors, I would put that on the inside. I guess its easier to sit with her and I dont really have much trouble with Kobe so easy for me to talk but I wouldnt get into the habit of sitting with him while he slept. He never gets out of bed unless we go and get him or its the morning he is allowed to otherwise I would just keep putting him back into bed like they do on the super nanny!

Yeah, safety gate is an option too.
She used to just go straight to sleep, no playing or anything.
And if she didn't come out of her room grinning all the time I wouldn't be so bother but she thinks she's so damn smart for getting out! grrrr. and she's waaaaay too persistent to just keep putting her back into bed. I tried that for the first few nights and she was in and out for an hour!!! and then slept until 8.40am the next day because she was so tired.
Might just continue sitting with her for a while. She'll get used to that soon and won't be so keen to escape I think

Supernanny says (hehehehehe) just keep putting the kid back in bed time and time again with no talking until they eventually tire out and go to sleep. It will take persistance and a few days but she will eventually learn there is no point in getting up out of bed all the time...

I had to put a lock on monster number one's door when he was little - he used to climb out of bed, sneak down the stairs, let himself out of the house and go for a walk to the park!!! We ended up having a house that looked like Alcatraz for a year - but then he grew out of it and all was safe, well and lock-free again.

Let me know how it goes niki, cause we are facing that battle soon. Have decided to delay it until after we move to Gisborne. Poor little man has had so much upheaval in his short life, so i thought as long as he's happy in the cot, I'll leave him a little longer...after I bought him cool duvet sets! Grrr.
However, when we get to Gisborne, Operation "Big-boy-bed" begins!

Screw Supernanny. I swear that even after an hour of putting Hannah back to bed each time she came out - she was just warming up!!!!!! I'm sure it would have gone on past midnight if I had let it. Stubborn child.
Anyway... I might get one of those little things that keep the fridge shut and put it on her door, so she can still open it but not get out.
I will keep you updated - might start that after the weekend if my other plan doesn't work. (Moving further away from her bed each night)

i'm also heading into 'operation big-boy bed' territory soon. once we've finished doing up jack's new room, he'll be moving in there into his new bed.
i'm so anxious about the whole process

Hey Nikki if the fridge thing doesnt work maybe a door gate is the way. My mate did that with her girl and used to sit by the door and everytime Lyric went to get up my friend would just tell her quietly but firmly to get back to bed. At the start she would be sitting at the door for 1/2 ish but it worked.
I think Super naany and all those other programs are great but sometimes their ideas just dont work for us.
Anyway good luck. I dont have that prob as have high door handles but am shifting soon so may need to use some of these ideas for my toerags lol

Tried the gate today and she played for about an hour before I decided to snuggle down with her. Then my Dad arrived home and there was no way she was settling down after that.
Luckily I could ignore her while he had "Grand-daughter" time and then he snuggled down with her at about 2.45 and she's still asleep now. May have to go and get her up or she won't be going to bed tonight!!! Can't freaking win.

I think the stuff you CAN take from supernanny is to be consistent. Decide what to do and stick with it for a while before deciding that it's not working. may take a while. I'm really dreading this whole bed thing Nikki! once you figure out Hannah, come around and deal with jake thanks!

I think I'm definitely going to stick with the sitting down thing. Has been working OK (well, pre-gate trial) and I think I'll be able to phase it out. (Have done this in the past with Hannah in her cot)
Anyway, will go with consistency from now on.

Darryl won't let me watch Supernanny anymore- I get so wound up and yell at the tv and it annoys him I hate that those poor little kids get punished for their parents incompetence.
Luckily charlotte hasn't figured out that she is now tall enough to open the door! Could you try a door wedge? Dad used to wedge a peice of cardboard in the side of the door as he shut it and it makes it quite hard to open. You can shoulder it open but it should make it a bit hard for her to do it.
