    Posted: 15 December 2008 at 11:52am

Hi,

Ok quick history, ds is now bottle fed following weeks of struggling with BF, consulting everyone that could help etc etc but he could just not latch and drink.

Anyway he has always been happy on the bottle until about 10 days ago, he would happily drink lots and is/was gaining plenty of weight.

All of a sudden about 90ml into the bottle he will push it out and scream and then refuse to take any more, i would be ok if it was just that but after feeding he is upset for some time, lots of patting and burping and eventually he calms down and we can put him down and he will play etc, only problem then is he has not taken enough and we need to top up a bit before he can nap.

Some feeds he is better than others, but its the crying following feeding that is concerning me, i wouldn't mind if he was just pushing it out and saying no more, he then totally goes crazy if we even put the bottle near his mouth again.

I have A Dr app this afternoon, just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and whether seeing the Dr is a good idea or am I just overreacting? Guess I am querying either problems with wind or maybe a bit of reflux (but he never spits up)

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Have you tried him on a different formula? because caden did this to us, he would scream as soon as the bottle went near him. I thought it was the bottles to start with so changed to Avent, but nope still the same, so back to TT, then I thought it was his teeth so tried syrimnge feeding for a while but still the same, in the end I decided it was his formula, so I changed him and he was happy as after that.

He was on the Nestle NAN Gold, and it was giving him chronic tummy pain, which is why he was fussing and crying at the bottle.

Or the other thing is he on the right teat for his age. I think with avent bottles for example they have a 0-1 month teat and then a 1 month +

Yep, we changed up to the right teat size a while back when he started to get annoyed with the newborn teat.

I am thinking about changing formula, but how do you know which one to try next. We are on Karricare gold plus, Sheza what did you change to?

Ahhhh the Gold formulas can cause really bad wind in babies. I think that under 6 months old the best formulas are the plain ones.
It was the Nestle NAN Gold that caused caden all the pain
The plain ones seem to be much easier for them to digest and are a lot gentler on their little tummys. They make out that the Gold ones are better, when they really are not.

I would try him on the plain Karicare from birth, it definitly sounds like its the gold formula causing him the pain.

Caden is now on plain S26 and its the best he has ever been, we have tried karicare and he got constipated.

Try a plain formula. Not a gold version or a plus. Daniel did very very well on the plain S26. We tried karicare, nuture, nuture gold before trying S26 and didn't look back. THe gold versions have one little added extra which they don't need and little bubbas struggle to digest it.

Ohhhhh, really even though he has always been on Gold.

Interesting, I have asked DH to go and get some plain formula. I really think it is wind, as some time after feeding he can taken more.

Take this morning, gobbled 90, then went nuts, and then won't settle until he has had another 60 (and he should be drinking about 150) just means all my feeds are all over the shop which is hopeless.

Yeah it could have just suddenly started to not agree with him.
I think you will see a good change on the normal karicare, you may need to give him a little nit more than normal or more feeds than normal, but he shouldnt get the bad tummy pains on it.

Also - dont get too hung up on what they "should" be having....Oli has always preferred smaller bottles more often. I think he was about 4months old before we managed to get a whole 150mls into him!

thanks, its hard not to think about what they should be having, but currently I know he is still hungry.

Sheza is there a reason he may want/need more on the plain formula?

I think, but I could be wrong, the Gold ones may fill them up more...I found(and this could just be Caden) he wanted more of the S26 than the other stuff we had him on. I dont know if thats cos its "lighter" or whether he just likes the taste more lol

he was having 150mls, once he was on S26 he would polish off 200mls and now he has 240ml.

Yeah and what SimSam said, each baby will drink what they are comfortable with, if he only drinks 100mls and seems happy after that, dont worry, he might just drink more of the next bottle! Just like us, they arnt so hungry at some times and really hungry at other.

its that part we are currently missing, he drinks and then is not happy.

We'll give the other formula a go and see how we get on.

Yep, he will probably drink more or his normal amount of the normal karicare, if its the Gold one making his tummy sore.

Its so hard to tell what the problem is with babys cos they cant tell you whats wrong, but your lil boy sounds just like caden was when his tummy was sore. I really hope the new formula make him feel heaps better, and it will make you feel heaps better knowing that he is happy

I hope so too.

Poor wee monkey is in bed after really crying and snacking on small bits (50ml) or so for the last couple of hours. I really need him to sleep and have a good long break so he can digest it all. But he is hungry, phew what a day.

Thanks heaps for the tips.

Thats ok

Bottle feeding can be just as confusing and stressful as breastfeeding I have found.

Is DH bring home some formula after work?

hmm fifi ill just repeat what sheza said as rayn did the same thing except it was the nurture, we had him on it from 4 weeks old after BF and then suddenly he didnt want it so we swapped him to s-26 and he loves it. Although he only seems to want less than what the tin recommends but hes not a guts like some babies. hehe.

Ok well I talked to Dh during the day and told him all about your comments re the gold stuff and said please buy basic karricare or basic s26, so he came home with s26 gold and then got mad at me saying i didn't say not to buy gold - grrrrr

Anyway swapped it and we have now got s26, i tell you immediately what i notice when you mixed up karricare gold and shook it up, it almost looked fizzy, s26 hardly any bubbles, that has got to be better.

He drank some without much fuss but did not drink much, but then has been very off today and hardly sleeping so think he was tired, we'll see what happens later.
