    Posted: 03 November 2008 at 5:11pm

Hi all

As a lot of you know, I have my nuchal scan tomorrow, when I'll be in theory 12.4/ 12.5 weeks pg. I had my last scan at 7.5 weeks after a couple of weeks of intermittent brown spotting/discharge (sorry tmi). That scan showed a healthy baby with a very strong heartbeat (167 bpm), measuring correct for dates. After the scan, the spotting continued on and off for anothe 2 weeks or so (and was quite regular the week after- I think when my period would've been due) and then suddenly stopped and I haven't seen it since. After having a couple of scans and some bloodwork which showed my HCG rising nicely (and quite high), my mw said don't worry about anymore scans, this brown discharge is obviously just something you have...so it's been 5 looong weeks without knowing how my baby is!

I have had bad ms, with vomiting most days (and sometimes twice a day) up until last monday. Just before then it started to be every couple of days and now I haven't thrown up since yesterday (so I had nearly a week of not being sick- although have continued to feel exhausted and had low grade nausea the whole time).  So I still have strong pg symptoms, which do seem to be lessoning somewhat although not disapearing.

However, I had a mc in MArch at about 5 weeks pg, and 9 years before that a missed mc at what I thought was about 12 weeks. I"d seen the baby's heartbeat on a scan and although I"d been told it was small for dates, I was not prepared for the ob o tell me at our later scan that the baby had died. I also had very bad ms with that pg, although in hindsight it might've stopped a little quicker than his one has (which has more like faded out! lol)...and I also got some brown bleeding type thing with that oe too, but that was close to being diagonsed with a missed mc, not weeks before.

So I guess my question is- how likely is it that tomorrow I am going to get sad news again? I haven't been overly excited about this pg as I have worried at every stage whether I am gonna mc again or not. I know there's nothing I can do anyway, but just wondered stats wise what the likelyhood was that my baby has died...given my ms has been so strong and consistent etc? I'm not sure how well I would cope finding at now that the news is not good. I don't have a feeling of doom or anything (which I *strongly* remember feeling 9 years ago before I got the bad news), but I an't feel the baby obviously and although I'm starting toget twinges and a bit of ligament pain now and then, I just literally can't believe there is a bubba in there and that tomorrow it will be alive and ok.....I know that sounds terrible but I am starting to really freak out

Is this feeling normal for 12 weeks or is everyone else confident of finding a healthy bubs at this stage?  actually feel like I"m going crazy

I remember my 12 week scan with Cooper I was absolutely adamant that it would be bad news, and it wasn't he was fine and I was relieved. Just take a couple of deep breaths before you go in, and maybe explain to the lady who's doing the scan that you are feeling anxious.

Oh, sounds like you've had a rough 5 wks!! Really feel for you. It doesn't sound to me like you will have mc'd though, but I'm not an expert. I have never had a mc to make me worry, but thats not a prerequisite! Our baby is something of a miracle, so I was worried because I was afraid if I lost her then we wouldn't get another one. And unfortunately it doesn't stop with the scan - theres always something else happening or not happening... 25wks is very nice to get to, because you know from there that even if something goes wrong there is a chance of survival... I don't know if you have a belief in/trust in God, but I found it helped keep me rational, the knowledge that God knows and everything works together for the best in the long run.

Just want you to know, you're not alone with your fears!! Everyone on OB is here for you, whatever happens.

PS we now have a healthy, happy 2wk old baby so my worrying was obviously pointless!!

Hi Emmecat

All I can say is I worried and was very anxious before my 12 week scan and convinced something might be wrong (we had been trying to get PG for a year and I dont think I could believe it was real!) then after the 12 week scan I worried until the 20 week scan, and I stll worry now that everything will be alright and I have 7 weeks to go. I had contractions at 28 weeks but they sorted that out in hospital and I now have got gestational diabetes so I worry about that. All in all I think its perfectly normal to worry and I guess its just the beginning of the worry we will all feel for our babies forever!

I am sure everything will be fine tomorrow and make sure you let us know how it goes!

The likelihood that anything has gone wrong since the last scan is tiny. I think its something like only 2% m/c after seeing a heartbeat and an even smaller percentage would be missed. Pg symptoms and the baby measuring correct for your dates at that scan and also the hcg tests you had done are all a great indication that everything is ok.

With Spencer my m/s died off around 9 weeks and obviously he was fine, it stuck around a bit longer this time but I think a lot of that was caused by being pg in winter and having a toddler spreading his germs to me all the time. Is totally normal for it to disappear (and is normally a relieve, but understand why it is a reassurance at the moment).

Good luck for tomorrow, try to stay calm and positive, I'm sure you have a healthy wee bubba in there.

Thanks so much for your replies ladies, it's good to hear of others happy endings!  I know logically I shouldn't worry but we've tried so hard for this bubba and I've not yet had a sccessful pg so I'm finding it difficult to bond with my little bump and also not to worry! I just keep thinking something is gonna go wrong, even though most days I am very sick and clearly pg lol.

Cuppatea- I can't believe you are 31 weeks already!!!

Sounds like everything will be okay. It's definitely normal to feel as nervous as you do with a subsequent baby after m/c. I had a m/c between #2 and #3 and I was so much more nervous with #3 than with any of the others.

Have you been able to get a heart beat in the last couple of weeks or have you not seen your mw in that time?

And I really wanted to post in here because I have a scan tomorrow as well So tomorrow night we can both post up our good news!

hey emmecat- I have my 12 week scan tommorrow too...

I completely relate to the not bonding with your bump feeling. Its so hard when youve been so sick, there is barely the energy for yourself, let alone anything else!

Remember how sick you have been- this is a good sign (even though Im always saying how much I hate it when people say that!), and the 12 week mark does bring some relief to symptoms- irronically making us all more paranoid!

Im sure it will all be fine, remember how many of us there are tommorrow having scans too- we will al be wondering how each other got on. Ill be sending you positive supportive vibes
Hang in there, tommorrow will be over before you know it.

Busymum- I haven't seen my mw in that time, just chatted to her on the phone. I mean, I saw here after my scan and the blood test results etc and she was pretty unconcerned once we'd seen a heartbeat and my HCG levels. She was aginst me having further unnessacry scans as the baby was still developing and I guess she quite rightly pointd out that even if I had a 10 week scan and it was ok, then something could happen the next day!   Shewasn't trying to be harsh, just truthful adn I appreciated that.

Kitkat- wow so you're off for your scan too?! Good luck, I think it should be ok I guess, it's nice to know others are having the sam feelings and the bonding thing was worrying me a bit too. It's like I"ve held back in case it didn't work out IYKWIM?!  We've both been really sick haven't we, even tonight I'm feeling nauseous so wil head off to bed in a minute... I'll post again in the moening bfore I leave and hopefully again with some good news when I get back! Gulp!

Hi Emma,

I agree with others that the chances of MC after the 7 week scan is tiny...and if there was to bad news it would have been already here.

With DD I had spotting and Bleeding and I was a nervous wreck too on each of my scan...and each time I felt sooo good because I knew she was fine.

I am sure your bub is fine hun. Let us know how you go.....

I know how you feel hun I was very nervous about our 12 weeks scan.
With Caden I had big scare at 6 weeks with red spotting(as you know), had my 6 week scan and it showed caden was all good and his heart was beating away! I kept spotting brown though for 2 weeks after the scan so I was quite nervous.
As soon as they put the scan thingy on my tummy I could see my wiggly little boy! The relief I felt was amazing, was like someone has taken the weight of the world off my shoulders!

Im so sure that you will be fine hun! You have all the typical preggy symptoms! I have all my fingers an toes crossed for ya ok

I have not read the other posts (at work!)

I was so nervous before our nuchal scan that I held DH hand, closed my eyes and ask the sonographer to tell me when she could see the heartbeat.

I felt so sick before hand and was soooo sure that bubs had passed.

Its normal chicken, especially when a routine scan has picked up bad news in previous pregnancy.

I still hold my breath when I go to see my mw and until I hear the heartbeat I cant concentrate.. she wont take my bp until after then LOL.

Good luck tomorrow, I will be thinking of you and a healthy bouncy baby.

I was totally the same..and to be honest I was freaked out the whole pregnancy(due to other issues I had later on) but it's totally normal to feel that way after a missed m/c..i think i read of all the m/c's 1% are missed ...
