so Ella has been in a study since birth for a med student at uni. Anyways he has been pretty hopeless and often fill out two papers in one visit - eg a 11 month old and 13 month old one when visiting her at 12 months.....get the picture!
anyways a few months back he asked if ihad a photocopied to copy off her well child book...oh how i wish now i had just told im i would...i offered it to him to take and copy..then he went to korea for a few months and when i asked he said his parents would drop it off to me...well they didnt!!! they dropped off paperwork for us to complete - yet another non baby contact assignment for him!
anyways last time we saw him i asked him for the book...he had NO memory of it and then said ooh yeah maybe he did he would look for it....
WELL he cannot find it....two months now since I asked him for it!!!! I am pretty mad - this is her well child book for goodness sake!!!!
DH wants to complain to the uni study - and to complain about how badly he has studied her development etc....what should I do....it is irreplaceable of course so we wont ever get it back no matter what.....ARGH!

I would def complain to the study co-ordinator or study leader. They will take it pretty seriously, as they are dependant on people like you guys to volunteer to take part. I would write a very strongly worded email or letter so that you have a record of it too.

I would complain to his supervisor and the department. That is not good to lose a book like that, that is really important to you guys.

I think that is unforgivable and would definately complain. He deserves to fail on that one. Would you want a doctor like that? He obviously doesnt take patient records seriously. Bloody students!

I would complain to his supervisor, but also advise the Ethics Committee that approved the study at the university as well.
That Wellchild book contains private medical information.

As a lecturer involved with clinical placements, I would definately speak to the paper leader about your concerns. Feedback about areas that could be improved is just so important for student's learning. He should definately be marked down for Practicing Professionally. You could also ask to not have him work with your family anymore, if you're feeling like the relationship won't work anymore.
Fingers crossed that her book turns up!! I'd be so upset if it were me.

Definitely complain. I agree with Kabe about professionalism - students in my profession could face failing the placement if they did something like that.
I'd also let them know that he'd do 2 visits in one (two papers in one visit - eg a 11 month old and 13 month old one when visiting her at 12 months). A pile of Auckland Uni med students did this, or something similar a few years ago, and almost got kicked out of the program for basically cheating on the paper, by not doing what they were required to do and covering it up.

Me too. Do you really want to let this guy out into the world as a doctor without at least being told his behaviour is unacceptable? The supervisor and the ethics committee are good people to speak to. You never know how seriously the supervisor will take you, but the ethics committee should definitely do something about it. (when you agreed to take part, you should have got a form with contact details of the ethics committee for exactly this kind of situation).
I know its not the same, but I had a situation with a vet student last year where I was very unhappy with his actions and made sure he got dragged through the mud for it - he didn't end up failing, but I hope he learnt something from the experience. Certainly I think he realised that his bolshy overconfidence came very close to getting him sued, and cost the clinic a considerable amount in treatment they provided the help the animal recover from his "mistake". Often you may find that he's been cutting corners elsewhere as well, and whilst each offence on its own doesn't constitute unsatisfactory performance, together they are enough to draw attention to him. He might even get the hard word put on him to find the book. He may not have looked very hard at all.

I would complain also. This is completely unprofessional and the University should be aware of things like this that happen.
However... it's not all "bloody students"! Most research students I have dealt with (including myself!!) have been extraordinarily professional and courteous... unfortunately I think you've got unlucky with a bad one here. But I still think it's important that the University knows about this particular person - they would not be impressed either.

That's really annoying! If it remains lost, you will be able to get copies of most of the details to make up a new book from Plunket (or whoever you went through) and the copy of the imm's cert is probably at her DC. Certainly the details will be with your GP.

well i wrote an email to the lady i had dealt with...ella was weeks old....and it bounced back...so left a message on her extension for someone to call me....ugh who knows who is in charge now....
anyone involved with auckland uni med know??? the lady i was dealing with was Sheree....
actually i remembered that for some of his months development studies he was away OE so he asked for his parents to drop in papers for me to complete...kinda defeats the purpose of a developmental and observation study of a child really....
Im actually sad at losing the initial notes - you know the midwife post natal ones etc = they cant be replaced....and her awesome wee growth chart....I kinda wish I had photocopied now.....

I dont know who was leading the study - presume it was the Paediatric Dept from School of Medicine.... might be worth checking out the contacts here - http://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/som/paed/aboutus/default.aspx someone might be able to help.

I think complaining is a good idea, but why would you hand over something so important to a stranger? I also have to say that I think some of the responsibility lies with you, you should have made him wait until you'd photocopied it. I hope for your sake you get it back...I guess hindsight is a grand thing.

Oh you poor sweet, hound the b#$%ers til they find it, that is so bad! Surely the students have guidelines to follow including the use and storage of confidential information.
I cant imagine someone so flipint and unorganised being a doctor. Its not like you want him thrown out you just want something back is rightfully your and very very special

Oh Ro...that aweful!
Talk to your MW and get a new book and ask her to fill in the week/Month/Year notes in it (I know my MW took notes as well as write them in the book). Then go to the place who did her immunisations and ask them to fill it in as they will have record of date etc.
I would complain...and tell him to get stuffed!! How irresponsible!!

Another thing - you could also go through our old March thread in Baby section because we often gave updates on weight and milestones and you can get the date from your posts. I know I cheated a bit by doing that with my record books of Lucas

well comments like that arent particularly helpful!!!
He is a med student, lives 4 streets away and told me he would bring it back later that week...and we had no photocopier at that point....if id known he would lose it i wouldnt have given it to him but who was to know that....Im actually annoyed that after he said he would be photocopying when i asked him the other nite he told me he just copied some notes into his book....so i dont even have his photocopies....
I have received a call from the school of med, forwarded on the email and the paed person is going to get back to me once they have looked into it....im happy enough with that.
Heck i was a student for two degrees and am all for med research so will continue to do these things but some people like him mess it up for others!
