Topic: where to start - 6 months? Posted: 04 June 2008 at 6:54pm |
Ok, am getting excited about MCN's and am feeling more confident so my questions:
1. How many would I need for a 6 month old. Was every 2nd day?
2. Best type of nappy for this age group?
Am still finding it all so confusing so any help is appreciated. Have done a search but most threads relate to NB's.
Thanks

How many sposies do you use now in a day?
If you multply that by 3 you should be right - one set to wear, one set in the wash/drying, and one set spare. It is good to have extra inserts for pocket nappies as these take onger to dry.
If you go to the snazzipants website there is a good description of the different sorts, and of course TheNappyNetwork forums have heaps and heaps of info.
What weight is your baby? You could probably move staright to mediums.

Sophie is the same age, and I use about 5 nappies per day, plus a night nappy. I would suggest about 15 nappies if you want to wash every second day. The more you have the easier it is - then you are not rushing trying to get them dry etc.
I mainly use pockets, and find them great, but am looking at getting a few AIO's to try. For night I use a fitted and cover. I think the best thing to do is to try a few different types. If you can, maybe get a hire kit, otherwise buy a few different sorts. I think I bought about 6 different brands of pockets to start with, and just worked out what worked for us. It a good idea to try different types of inserts - hemp, bamboo and MF.
Favourite brands: one size pocket would have to be bum genius. Other pockets, tweedles are great value and work well for us, foxybots are very cute. AIO you have to try a d'lish - they are devine!!

At this stage it will be day only. Didn't realise I would need so many...am slowly finding it daunting again.
Edited to add: He is around 9 kg's now but is rather long and has decent thighs on him!

Oh, and size wise - Sophie is in mediums, she is about 7.5kgs! The only nappy I would look at getting a bigger size is the d'lish as they are so small fitting.
There must be someone is CHCH who can show you a few nappies, and possibly let you try a few!!

You don't need to buy them all at once, I think it took me 6 months to get a good stash! Don't be put off - it's really fun once you start!!

I started with just 6, washed every day, and used sposies at night. Grab a couple of extra inserts (if you are getting separates) because the outers are much faster drying. I agree that 15 is a good number, but you don't have to start with 15. Even just a few, used every couple of days, will still reduce your sposie costs.

And have a look on trademe and the nappy network, you can often pick up nappies which have hardly been worn, or even never worn much cheaper.
Great idea about getting extra inserts, I struggled until I did that! There are a lot of sales on at the moment too, so it's probably a good time to buy a few!

Hi,
I'm using cloth part-time whilst I build up my stash of nappies... I have enough for a full day of cloth, but then use sposies at night, and the next day till they inserts are all dry again ready for use. Note to self: must get more inserts !! lol
So don't feel you need to fork out loads all at once, I'm just buying 1 or 2 (or 4 in the Mothers Instinct sale) every couple of weeks with the aim of being in cloth full-time by the time my daughter is 3 months old :D Tho Ava is a hefty 6kgs at only 8 weeks old, so I'm buying mediums to get more wear out of them as well as some one sized pockets :D
good luck

Hi there! I switched to cloth when my son was 5.5mths (around 15lbs) and went straight into mediums. I had 12 nappies which was enough for day & night, but I did a wash every day (5-6 per 24hrs so I had an extra set to wear on the second day while the first set was drying). Perhaps just buy a few different ones to try out and see what nappy suits your baby - I would recommend Fuzzi Bunz (although haven't tried the new style & have heard they're a bit bigger than the old version), Honeychild, Foxybots & Itti Bitti D'lish. There are plenty of other nappies out there too, these are just the ones that I've tried

I would suggest you have a look at the NZ WAHM websites - there's at least one I know of that offer a reduced trial nappy price which might be good until you decide which system/style works for you.
Or if you're handy with a sewing machine why not try making your own? I recently priced up the fabric from greenbeans and for 8 sm/med nappies it worked out to about $6 a nappy (without inserts) . Or if you head over to the nappy network and join up there are some kits around the place which you could have a look IRL at some of the nappies. HTH

Hi
To work out how many nappies you need - figure how how many times you change in the day as this is how many cloth naps you will need. So if you want to wash every other day buy enough to cover the changes for 2 days then a few extras for the 'unexpected' changes and while you have some washing/drying.
There are a lot of brands/styles of nappies - one size nappies can work well and be a bit more cost effective as you are not having to buy muliple sizes as baby grows. It may pay to purchase a few different brands and see how they fit/perform for you before investing a lot of money into 1 brand.
Good luck

i definately recommend getting maybe 2 or 3 of a few different brands rather than all of one brand....if one doesn't work for you, they are easy to sell and then you can buy more of the ones you do like
my faves are baby harmony and drybees....i also love my d'lish, wish i could justify getting more of them
joel-eze and peapods (yes i like them) are good too

Thanks so much for all your help. Thought I would update on where I am at:
I just spent $146 on nappies. This will be my starting collection when they all arrive. Am hoping I can return them if they don't fit as I was a wee bit unsure on sizing as Mac is only 6 months but at last weigh in was 8.5 kg and am guessing he is at least 9 -9.5 kgs now.
So I brought:
A Drybee in cornflower (L)
A Fuzzi in Red (M)
A BG in Grasshopper
A Foxybot in Purple Zebra (M)
A Foxybot in Blue Cameo (L)
Plus 2 bibs from Foxybot
And am heading out to buy a Honeychild when I finish work...
Very excited...can you tell

When you try them on, use a teatowel or something covering the inside of it, even pin it on him like a cloth nap, that way you should be able to return them fine. (unless he pees! but that is life? lol) Should be thin enough to still get a good idea of the fit too.
