Topic: Alcohol pre baby... Posted: 02 May 2008 at 10:59am |
Hiya
Well I’ve done a search and couldn’t find anything so was hoping someone here would have the answer.
I’m a keen drinker and would prob have a glass with a meal each night and tend to get ‘on it’ one a weekend.
I’m (obviously) aware that this will have to stop when I get pregnant, however last night, over a few drinks with friends, there was varying opinions on how soon before TTC that people thought you should stop drinking. My plan was that I would stop after AF and be ‘sober’ for the month that we were going to start trying. But others seemed to think I should stop 3 months before hand – and spooked me with foetal alcohol syndrome stories…
So, what’s your take on this?

I don't see that there is any harm to drinking in moderation probably up until ovulation or just before, but I'd cut the binge drinking out simply because it's bad for your body and you want your body to be in top shape

LOL Ginger - once a week is a cut down for me!
I'm a REAL lush...but I'm sure I can manage to be better behaved for a good reason!
(And good luck for tomorrow Ginger...I'll be thinking of you and your full bladder - never thought I'd say that to someone )

Michaela was a planned pregnancy and I drank until I found out I was pregnant. I'll be doing the same next time too.
I know it's often recommended that you stop drinking alcohol, caffeine etc while TTC but that's because it can prevent conception. They also recommend that you try and relax, don't stress about it - what better way than with a glass of red.
Once pregnant it takes 5-6 weeks before the blood supplies are joined which is when the baby starts absorbing good and bad stuff from your diet. If you're consciously TTC you'll know before then that you're pregnant.
If you are concerned that having a glass of wine when you're potentially pregnant would be harmful but you would like a drink every now and then why not drink when you have your AF and in the week following prior to ovulation.
I think the key is don't drink to excess and if you suspect you're pregnant do a test before opening your bottle of wine.

Ha!
You know what I mean though aye? Everything in moderation and all that. One thing I've found with years of TTC is that it's just as valuable not to obssess

Totally agree...I'm lucky that all my other addictions are well and truely kicked to the curb - including caffine. I've been free of that for 3 years now...Only the bottle to go! But, as they say, I'm worth it!

I'd say to stop once you're TTC, but the odd glass is fine. I had a few drinks at a wedding the night before I found out I was pregga's. Only tested because I thought my hangover had gone on for abit too long . Not ideal, but babies turned out fine, as far as I can tell.

p.s. I said in my post that "I know it's often recommended that you stop drinking alcohol, caffeine etc while TTC but that's because it can prevent conception" I just want to add that doesn't mean it will prevent conception.
I didn't stop or even cut down drinking (although I don't binge drink anyway). I stopped taking the pill in early april, found out I was pregnant in July and had my DD the next april so it didn't seem to make much of a difference to me.

I agree with Mrs Mojo....we were TTC for nearly a year and after a while I keep my lifestyle how it was pre TTC and that meant the occasional wine right through...until I got my BFP.

Ah ha, but we save money if we dont buy alcohol AND it keeps my diabetes in check if i dont drink.. So there are three reasons not to drink, for me.
But hey, i never said the occaisional drink was not gonna happen just that my occaisional 'bottle' of wine will stop...

Yep, been TTC for about 17 months now and while I'm not a big drinker anyways, I did start out this journey not drinking at all, but now, ahhh, I'll have a wee wine if I feel like it - do try to keep it pre OV but every now and then, it's post OV (like today over lunch with an old friend)... just helps keep a bit of normality to my life and not obsess too much!

My wee man was also a planned bubba and I drank until I got my BFP. It was only ever one or two wines in a session and I had no probs conceiving.
Its a matter of doing what you feel comfortable with!

Its a personal preference. I don't drink much so it hasn't been an issue for me. But I do have the occassional and if I do, its no more than a couple.
I am just surprised you 'couldn't find anything' online about it, as there is heaps of information out there on this topic. Infact, there are a few good nz sites around this.

Sorry, to clarify (above)...
I'd done a search on this forum. I am aware of the resources available on line and in print.
