I've always been a tummy sleeper but since there is a bump preventing that I tend to fall asleep on my side.  Just lately when I wake up in the night for the all frequent pee trip I'm lying on my back.  This doesn't effect the baby does it?

i was always told during pregnancy that its best to sleep on your side or back, tho that gets harder as you get bigger, and baby gets kickier lol

not sure if thats correct, just what i was told back then :-)

Yip my MW told me not to sleep on my back. You can't help it if you wake up on your back though...

Apparently it's something to do with the weight of your uterus (& baby) which can press down on a major vein & cut off the blood supply (worst case scenario). I find that I feel quite ill if I lie on my back, even for a few minutes... xx(]

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm barking up the wrong tree...

Yeah sally belly that is what I was told as well, was also told not to lie on right side as that is the side the vein is on. I use to go to sleep on my side and wake up on my back as well (i am also normally a tummy sleeper) but I found once I hit 30ish weeks that would no longer happen, I think it was too difficult to change position without actually waking myself up.

geez people sure gave me some wrong advice when i was pregnant lol, they said sleep anyway except for on my stomach, and nothing about the right side, and also something to do with a pillow between the legs? whatever that was for.

oh well, caitlyn seems fine, so far, but i'll be on the look out for any stranger than usual behaviour hehe

I hadn't heard about the right side before either, and I've tried the pillow but just throw it in my sleep :)

Yeah I didn't hear about that until doing yoga at about 20 weeks and then I read it in a book a little while later. Truth be told even though I did know sometimes I would get so uncomfortable that I would just sleep on my right side and to hell with it!!!
Apparently it is ok to sleep on your back if slightly tilted to the left, doesn't need to be much so maybe put a blanket there so when you roll over you are not completely flat.

I think the pillow between the legs is to stop your belly from pulling you over and giving you hip pain. All this talk is making me appreciate how much more comfortable sleeping is on the other side, even if I don't get quite as much!!!

I was told best to sleep on your left side as there are some major veins on your right side that you could cut off if you slept on your back or right side. But at 37 weeks I really didn't care - I was comfortable on my back and thats how I slept, and I was arguing to be induced by that stage with the usless OB that I got rid of. I used a pillow between my knees as well - more for a comfort thing thou.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My midwife said not to worry about it until 28 weeks into the pregnancy. I must check with her properly this time though as sleeping on my back is the only way I'm comfortable and I always wake up on my back anyway. I get really achey when I sleep on either my left or right sides.

I've been told to lie on left or right side..though left preferable noone has said right is bad to me..and if you wake up on your back don't worry you will apparently wake up if you are uncomfortable enough .... i miss my tummy sleeping too..i was too paranoid and then it was too uncomfortable:(

I always sleep on my right side and my back, lol... that is just what is most comfortable! My MW said that as long as I feel comfortable, it won't be doing any harm, because it you are squashing any veins etc. you will start feeling pretty uncomfortable. One time I was lying on my right side for a few mins and my arms went numb... so I moved. But apart from that one time I have always been most comfortable on right side and back...

My MW also said that around 28 weeks some people start finding that they have to try sleeping a bit differently, as what was most comfortable earlier may not be any more.

I would say, so long as you aren't sleeping on top of your tummy, sleep however you are comfortable! Your body will let you know if you are hurting it... it's what bodies do.

I can only sleep on my back as bubs is lying straight across and so it either feels like I'm crushing his head or his feet if I lie on either side. He kicks me like mad. I think sleep at this stage is more important than worrying about sides too much, you just need to do what's comfortable. Sure, if you're comfortable anyway, then choose the left side but otherwise just get some sleep however you can.

I try to sleep on my left side but I find that I invariably wake up on my back. And I get a sore hip and back when I sleep on my left - so I've sorta flagged it lately to be honest and gone with sleeping on my right side.

After all the sleep discussions I had an awesome sleep last night, didn't sleep on my back but on my side.  I think at the moment I will go with getting sleep however I can.

As said by Janey I'm sure my body would tell me if I was doing anything terrible.
