Topic: breast milk Posted: 05 February 2008 at 10:06pm |
OK this is gonna sound really random but I remember ages ago reading a thread about breast milk... things that were good to eat/drink to make the milk kinda thicker and therefore baby fuller and able to sleep longer.
Someone tell me I'm not imagining things? Does anyone know the things that are good to eat/drink for this?

Yep I remember, some of the girls suggested stuff to me when my milk supply was dropping off.
Complan - I drunk it every afternoon with banana. Yummy.
There are milkshakes that you can make up also... I wouldn't know where to find the recipes sorry.
Nuts (I just had peanut butter sandwiches), and ate bags of cashew nuts.
Is everything ok?

I remember oatmeal ie poridge was good. And yeast extract. Bananas too.
Try those cookes too
Lactation Boosting Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip & Flaxseed cookies
Ingredients :
* 1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)
Directions:
Preheat oven at 375 degrees F. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.
Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.
Serves: 6 dozen cookies
Preparation time: 15 minutes
(Recipe pinched from TNN site )

Yeah everything is all good, just wanting to try some different things... Harry used to sleep 2 x 5 hour sleeps at night (bliss I know!) and now he's gone to waking every 2 - 3 hours. I'm doing the same during the day, feeding 3 hourly. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the quality (rather than the amount) of my milk. My supply is just fine. Is it possible that the quality of my milk can drop off?
I do have to admit I haven't been eating as much as I was (naughty mummy), so I'm wondering if that can have anything to do with it?
He has a fab appetite and feeds very well, and put on heaps of weight at last weigh in so I'm not concerned about that. Just trying to figure out why my boy is waking more often! Unless it's a growth spurt that's just lasted more than a week...

Definitely protein with every meal and snack. Banannas, nuts (if you're not allergic), eggs (omlettes - yum!), chicken, baked beans, cheese. etc

Totally could be a growth spurt, it's all such a guessing game!! If he's showing hungry signs before 3 hours I feed him then (occasionally he'll want it after a couple of hours)... I meant was waking him at the 3 hours if he was asleep so he would feed more often and hopefully not need as much at night
Well yesterday I had eggs, baked beans, nuts and cold milos... and he only woke up once last night! Woo hoo
Right, protein protein here I come...

Right I'm going to do this too. Rowan's cluster feeds in the afternoon are knocking me off my feet.

Thanks Arohanui!
I have to admit, Im not the best eater. I have a older girl and I work from home so often eating just doesn't make the priority list I do have complain and was having regular smoothies when it was warmer, but now that its cooler, I haven't had as many.
Ill definately try and up my protein intake and see if that makes a difference.
Last night it was 9pm 12:30am 3am 5:30am This is definately effecting my brain function and Im doing stupid things cos Im tired...coffee in the freezer etc

Aw JD It is hard ay. I found it hard with just a bubba, let alone having another kid and working from home!! I can see why you're wanting to find anything to help. Hang in there, you're doing great. Do give eating/drinking better a good go, cos I found it made a big difference for me.
Another thing I found really good was Vitaquench. And snacking on nuts/dried fruit
And yeah if that doesn't help, trying formula before you go back to the solids would be better I think.
