I'm keen to hear the experiences of other mum's of slingbabies with regards to sleep. I have an 11 wk old daughter, and around the 5 wk mark she started to become very difficult to settle during the day. I perservered for a couple of weeks trying to get her to sleep in her basinett, but all that happened was that her daytime naps turned to custard and she was only sleeping for 25 mins at a time . So I started putting her in my meitai sling a lot more, and now she has most of her daytime naps in that. She's back to sleeping for an hour or more at a time, and we are both much less stressed so its working out well and I'm happy to continue with this for the moment.

However I'm a bit worried out how this is going to pan out in future, as in a few months its going to be impractical for her to be having her day time naps in the sling - for one thing I have to go back to work part time. I'm keen to hear how and when (or if) other mums who use slings a lot manage to get their babies to sleep in their beds. Will she just grow out of this sling-sleeping phase and become better at settling in her bed? At what age should I start trying to get her to settle in her bed? She pretty much won't sleep in her bassinet during the day at all now - even if I put her down after she's gone to sleep she almost always wakes up.

I should add that she sleeps in her bassinet at night no problem - only wakes up once or twice between 8pm and 7am.

Have you got access to a hammock? Might be a gentle transition for her.

The experts say sleep habbits don't form till 4-6 months (depending on which expert!) so you have some time up your sleeve from that perspective.

I used to use my moby for at least one sleep a day when DD was little. She's 5 months now and will still sleep in it but will happily sleep in her own bed too. I generally use it if she is unsettled now, but she also enjoys being in it walking about too.

My DS was having a lot of his sleeps in the sling or in my arms for the first few months too for the same reason and I switched to using the hammock. Didn't really stretch them out though and was still mainly sleeping for 25-45 mins. Rocking it before he woke sometimes helped extend them but still not the ideal and now we're just switching to the cot which has been no problem as he can almost roll over in the hammock. Still short sleeps ;)

Quite a few of the girls have said the catnaps start extending out around the 5-7 month mark anyway so once you start the transition to hammock/bassinette/cot it might end up not too much longer with catnaps.

I found white noise helpful for settling him, have you tried that? Radio static is supposedly just as good.

My DD2 (now 8.5mos) went through a very similar phase, only sleeping on me in the meitai for day sleeps. She did this for about two months, and eventually I got her back to sleeping in a bed - I discovered that she quite liked to feed lying down so at first would just put her in our (master) bed, then transitioned to her cot.

She still has plenty of day sleeps in our sling though (MT or SSC), we would never get out and about otherwise or get any errands done!

I know it seems like a cliche but I promise, this too shall pass!

Thanks for the replies! I think I will try getting her to have one of her naps a day in her bassinet. We have a hanging bassinet so its more labour intensive than a hammock but at least I can rock her if necessary. I have tried white noise as well - the vacuum cleaner and washing machine work quite well, but the white noise CD I made is not so effective! The trick seems to be knowing when to put her down - if I put her down too early, or if she wakes up she gets really hyperactive and is impossible to settle back down.

At least with the sling I know I can take her out and about and she will be fine - could be worse I guess!

Don't stress, she'll be fine . DS slept in a mei tai a lot when he was teensy, then a hammock, then shifted into his cot with no great drama.

I'm a big fan of the idea that sling babies turn out to be so secure that they're actually very versatile! I remember a plunket nurse trying to tell me I was 'creating a rod' blah blah blah, so glad now that I ignored her. I still carry DS (13 months) in the Mei Tai when we go out for a wander, or even when he's keen for a cuddle. He gets excited now when he sees me getting it out of my bag

PS - We did the same thing as you're planning to when changing the sleeping places around - having one day sleep in the different place to get used to it nice & slowly .
