Topic: 10 week old day sleep problems Posted: 15 April 2010 at 9:24am |
My wee man has ALWAYS had trouble sleeping during the day. However at the moment his night sleeps are pretty good, only waking once at 3 or 4am. He has three sleeps during the day, but the problem is he wakes after an hour and cannot put himself back to sleep! Sometimes I can SEE that he is still tired but for some reason he can't resettle, even though he does it perfectly well in the night. I suspect it is because he wakes up too much due to looking around (which he can't do in the night due to it being dark), but I am not sure how to solve this? At the moment after the hour, I am taking him out in the pram to get him to nod off for at least another half hour. I don't mind doing this once a day (as I enjoy walking) but don't want to have to do it every time!
Any ideas???

Have you tried black out curtains? We got some from the Warehouse and that seemed to help a bit from memory. I could never manage to resettle DS, despite my efforts.

That post could have come from me, sounds like my little 11 week old man! I put a plain blanket or muslin over the top of his bassinet so he cant see anything - he is very visual and gets distracted by anything easily. He finds the light fittings so fascinating Plunket were the ones who showed me this trick and it works really well for us. You can use clothes pegs to hold it in place.
He is also really only napping during the day but becuase his night sleeps are so good (10 hours+) im OK with that.

Have you got a good baby carrier or sling?

I have to say that I think this is a stage that most babies go through. Both my girls had daytime sleeps of no more than 30-45 mins at a time (1 sleep cycle). This happened from about 8 weeks through to about 5 months.
I really stressed about it but DH just said that if that was what the baby was going to do then to schedule my day around that time period for a nap. So I ended up doing this and became a bit less stressed about it. We started at 4 x 45 min naps a day around 10 weeks and ended with 3 x 45 min naps around 5 months. Then things changed and she started sleeping longer (mostly!!! )
Just go with it for now. It will change!

My DD is exactly the same, she started sleeping less in the day but going right through at night (usually 7pm - 6:30am with a 10:30pm dream feed) at 8 weeks. We are getting about four hour - hour and a half day naps, sometimes longer. It is a bit of a pain but I think she must do most of her "repairing" at night. We also do the dark blanket over her bassinet and it works great. Plus if she's a bit grizzly we just rock her bassinet and she doesn't freak out seeing us go in to do it.

Jackson was the perfect day and night sleeper until 10 weeks old then he would only sleep 20 - 40 minutes during the day. That continued until 4 months when we realised it was my milk supply that was the problem (he wasnt gaining weight). But he would sleep 7pm to 5 or 6am, so it was only day sleeping that was the problem.
I also tried walking, wearing him, patting, sushing, rubbing his head, rocking etc and nothing worked so in the end I gave up and just went with him. He ended up having 3 to 4 cat naps during the day.
When we got to 4 months he started having 2 to 3 long day sleeps of usually an hour to 1.5 hours, but, he started waking 2 to 3 times during the night. Thankfully the night waking stopped at 6 months and now he has 2 day sleeps of up to 1.5 hours (on the very odd occasion he will go to 2 hours) and sleeps 7pm to 4 or 5am. Some days he sometimes cat naps though which can make for a very grumpy baby.
I agree, just go with the flow for now. He will change again no doubt

plunket told me i just have a cat napper as i was worried cause he only does 2 or 3 30min-1hour naps and he is happy after that and she said maybe that's all he needs.. sometimes he appears tired and i try to rock and he will nod off for two secs then wake again and is happy..weird child:) but he also sleeps well at night 6-1 and then 130-5-6 or so or 8-4 so i stopped worrying about it too.. though he has done a three hour sleep yesterday and the day before. Pram wont work for us and car will only do another 20 mins or so so i just let him get up. It's weird how they self settle at night but not in day sometimes isnt it!

My DD is the same and has been from 6 or 7 weeks. She gets around 4 45min sleeps a day and is now 4 months. Sleeps ok during the night, but seems thats all she needs during the day, (unless she sleeps on me). I have relaxed about it you cant make a baby sleep so just go with the flow.

I agree with Hippy Mama - give a sling or a frontpack a try (and you score an extra wonderful cuddle!)
