DD will be 1 in 5 weeks time.

We have had a very rough first year with allergies, reflux, leaky gut, failure to thrive, screaming up to six hours per night, very little sleep - argh - you name it!

Pre solids we managed it with restricting my diet (I am dairy, egg, nut, soy, fish/shellfish, gluten etc free) Any time we give her solids she screams in pain for a week after - so a couple of months ago our Paed decided to take her off solids and for her just to be BF to give her gut a chance to mature/heal. She is slowly getting better.

Has anyone else been through anything similar? I feel quite alone with this. I also feel a bit torn - on one hand I am dreading the next time I need to try her on solids, but I am also feeling terrible that she is missing out on food - as she seems to miss eating and is unlikely to be able to eat anything at her upcoming 1st birthday. I also feel exhausted from exclusively BFding a very active (nearly) toddler.

Has anyone else been through or is going through something similar?

Yep pretty much something similar but not as extreme as you. I do feel for your pain of your own diet let alone your DD's diet.

We've got sleep now after putting him on losec. Had a nightmare of a weekend & last night as well. I hate having to second guess everything I put in my mouth let alone his mouth.

Have you thought about putting her onto Neocate as a suppliment so she's not feeding as much off you? I have heard of some kids on a chat list I"m on still mostly fed on Neocate around the ages of 2, 3 & 4.

Hi Kel

Paed wants her to have Neocate as a top up after each BF to try and get her to put on weight, but I can't get her to drink the stuff. I have been giving her some as a 'solid' (with a little water)- but can only get her to eat a minimal amount of it.

Paed thinks that reflux is not her biggest problem as she is far worse on solids than liquids, so no losec at the moment. I thought about talking to the Paed about that again, but she is generally more settled at the moment (only crying less than 1 hour per day)- only she is feeding 3x per night. So no end to my sleep deprivation in sight!

Yes, I hate the second guessing too! - but that is a bit easier now that she is not eating as well. We had a crap weekend too, I ended up catching a tummy bug from my 3 year old and I was so run down I couldn't cope with it and ended up on a drip at A&E

(is that the everybody forum?)

No it's a diet based one but there is a specific one called neocatekids I think. I'm not on that yet as it's a bit over my head.

She might have silent reflux though? You've cut out all the allergens in your milk which is why she will be better.

Oh no, I live in fear of getting sick & cross fingers that I won't.

Hugs - we had similar first year with Isla, although not all of the same issues. I was bf on an everything free diet to, and man is it hard. In the end we put Isla onto PeptiJr fulltime at 10 months cos she was still covered in excema, still refluxing dispite 8 doeses of meds per day adn I couldnt cut anything else out of my diet.
Because of her reflux we didnt introduce any protein until she was almost a yr old- so she was only getting a bit of baby rice and fruit and vege. The Paed said that she would still be getting all the iron etc she needed from me, and then from the formula and that she didnt need meat, even tho I was worried since its drummed in to you that they 'should' be eating full meals by 6 months.
Once she started eating properly boy was it hard having to watch her diet so closely and make everything from scratch. We did give her a natural calcium supplement.

This time around I have been seeing a natural health practioner since I was preg- I cut some things from my diet, and even more since Aiden began showing signs of reflux. But now hes good and not on any meds. We do no he cannot tollerate soymilk, and other things upset him a lot to, so my diet is pretty basic, but not like it was so resticted with Isla.
I plan to exclusively bf him til at least 10 months old and possibly delay solids even longer if we both happy to, on the advise of the natural health guy I see to hopefully avoid allergys.

I've no experience with this (yet ) but my little brother had the same kind of allergies you describe. He was BF till almost 3 because he needed to eat something, and he looked like he was starving, because everytime he tried something that was no good for him, he couldn't digest anything for a week or so. Eventually he was seen by a dietician who had a read of the food diary my mum had kept and came up with a long list of likely culprits and a list of probable *safe* foods. Mostly veges, I think. We had a pretty boring diet for a few years so he didn't get left out, although I do remember him getting mashed potato in a cone while we had vanilla icecream for a treat once or twice (poor kid!!).

Ultimately, he did get on to eating an acceptable diet, and he's now in his 20's and definitely not undernourished! In fact since his teens he's had a cast-iron stomach, probably because it became accustomed to so much abuse as a wee kid.

So not much help, but I do remember life getting easier when he was around 8 or 9? And before that, once he was around 5 or so I think, he learnt that if I he ate things without asking first, he felt sick, so he stopped trying to sneak bad foods. Before that he'd just try and join in when we were out or people came over with food etc. (I was often assigned the job of supervising what he ate).

ETA - on the plus side, that list has provided a good starting point for me trying to get my little girl's tummy sorted out! She seems to be even more sensitive than he was, but to a smaller selection of irritants, at least.

I'm not much help with the other stuff but if you talk to the nutritionist at 0800 NEOCATE she will give you heaps of ideas of how to get your girl to take necoate.

When we weaned our boy onto it with had to mix it with his standard formula and then slowly increase the amount of neocate until he was on it 100% you would be able to do the same but mix with expressed breastmilk instead.

I think some other options were to add vanilla essence or golden syrup and then slowly remove that so that they get use to the taste but given the severity off her allergies I probably wouldn't go there at all. But I'm sure the lady at Nutricia will be able to help, she was awesome the couple of times I phoned for help.

And hugs, I only have tiny idea of what you are going through and can't imagine how hard it must be

Thanks everyone for your input!

We still haven't tried her on any protein foods yet. I had only tried rice, millet, pear, pumpkin, kumara and avocado. None completely agreed with her, but some were much worse than others.

T_Rex - Your poor brother! Luckily there are better options available now!

I'm a bit torn on the Neocate. It is only a temporary thing for us (to be replaced by food, soon - hopefully!). So I don't want her to prefer it to BM...
