Ok so I have finally enrolled DD to start daycare when she will be 5 1/2 months for 2 days a week. I have a couple of questions to make sure that the transition is as stress free as possible given that I really don't want to be putting her in there and would much rather stay at home

- She'll be getting EBM approximately how much should I leave per feed? She still hasn't consistanly taken a bottle so I have NO idea about how much she'll need.

- What sort of clothing is good for daycare? Obviously not good stuff but am I better doing footed pants or pants and socks etc

- They are willing to try cloth so for those of you who do cloth at daycare how do you manage it?

- Any other tips would be welcome

My girl started at 6 months and i just put her in whatever - normally stuff i didnt mind getting dirty (she finger painted with assistance at 6.5 months for a BD card for Daddy!)

but normally it was an all in one with trackies and socks.

I dont do cloth at daycare but another Mum does and i beleive they just put his used ones in a plastic bag and puts them in his daycare bag at the end of the day.

Hi,

Sorry not much help with the EBM or cloth naps. My bubs when to DC at 6 months old and I seemed to do pants alot especially as they are starting to move around alot as well as doing activities like the jolly jumper etc.

Also do a settling in period - do a couple of visits with bubs of 1/2 an hour to get you both used to the idea. My DC on about visit four asked me to leave bubs for a while (eeeeee) even though it was hard I went of and had a coffee so I was gone for about an hour, then just before I had to start work I left her one day for almost the whole day and that was probably harder than the actually first real day.

Dynamo is great for soaking the clothes in, sometimes you have to do it more than once but it does work wonders and trust me you can't believe the state of some clothing!

Good luck

Thanks we have already had a few visits while we were choosing a daycare, luckily my first choice had spaces

I can believe the state of some clothes as I teach and I know how dirty kids can get while playing. I am figuring we will have daycare/playcentre clothes and good clothes, think I might get some cheap stuff off TM to get me started with things I won't mind getting stained.

DD started DC at the beginning of the month for 3 days a week....she goes to full time next week

She is FF now so sorry can't help you with the EBM.
Same with the cloth nappies, I'm using disposables.

Re clothes - TnT was having a huge sale so I went and got some cheap dark coloured clothes for her, went with the short sleeved all in ones, with pants, socks and a long sleeve top. I think all up about 7 or 8 outfits cost us under $40 (some of the stuff isn't that great but hey it was only $3.99!) I figured if it get ruined it doesn't matter!

She loves it there, with her wee friends.

Hi ya

DS1 started daycare just short of 4 months. He was FF so can't help with the EBM - but will be watching the answers with interest as DS2 starts daycare in about 3 weeks and he is BF exclusively at the moment - not sure what I am going to do about that yet.

But DS1 is in cloth nappies full time including daycare, they have been great about it. The only requirement is that I provided a container with a lid on it so that the other kids couldn't get into it. So I got a white bucket with lid and put a wetbag in that each morning (clean obviously) and then remove it each night when I pick him up with the dirty nappies. I then wash them each night. I have two wetbags so that if I don't manage to get everything washed and hung out overnight I have one clean one to go the next day.

Hope that helps - sorry about the novel!

FattyKat thats a good idea for clothes I might have to do that luckily she's only going 2 days so we won't need too many extras, plus I have hand me downs comming some of which should be suitable too.

Thanks mandz, that sounds nice and easy with the cloth. and I will definately let you know how the feeding goes, although Esme will probably be starting at around the same time as your DS and it wasn't a novel at all!

Both my kids had some EBM around that age and from memory (don't quote me on this, nappy brain!!) they were drinking between 150-200mls/bottle but both have been quite gutsy babies so she may drink a little less. I'd say if you work on 200mls/feed you should have enough. At 6 months they were both having one formula/day, and drinking about 200-240mls max. If you start doing the odd bottle a few weeks before she starts you'll have a good idea anyway.

I got heaps of clothes from TnT too, and some bulk lots off trademe. Leggings and trackies are best, and button up under the bum singlets / t shirts/ long sleeve tops so they don't ride up. I also found lots of long sleeved t shirts were good with just the odd jumper/sweatshirt, as its quite warm in the dc rooms, so t shirt and long sleeved t shirt was often enough in winter (apart from when theyre outside). Remember to get a warm hat too, as they need them when outside.

People I know who did cloth just provided a wetbag and took them home to wash at the end of the day.

My daycare currently costs $284 per week - that is 5 full days 8am to 5.30pm. But is going up shortly to $299 per week as they have not increased their pricing for 2 years. We do get a discount for having 2 children with them - and DS1 will be 2 so the price reduces slightly for him as well!

Thanks Nikki, we have been trying her with bottles but she's not interested yet. I figured if I sent bottles in 100mL amounts then it won't matter if she ends up having 2.
Her daycare is $43 a day full time, $28 part time or $175 a week full time and $114 part time. Full time is 7.45am-5.15pm and part time is 9am-3pm It is slightly less for over 3s

because they get 20 hours of ECE when they turn 3years old. It should be free the 20 hours but most places charge a surgharge which is supposed to be opitional. It used to be free, free but national took the word free out so now it's just 20 hours ECE!

I think it's also because they can have more children once they are over 2 but some kids stay in the under 2s for longer. Most centres are only aloud 8-10 children under 2 and the ratio is smaller too I think.

- She'll be getting EBM approximately how much should I leave per feed? She still hasn't consistanly taken a bottle so I have NO idea about how much she'll need.

I started Ryan with 180mls of EBm for his feed but he's become quite the guts and I'm dropping him off with 250mls now - which he reguarly drinks about 220mls. I would say your idea to leave 2 100ml bottles will be great. After a couple of weeks you'll start to get a feel for what you need.

- What sort of clothing is good for daycare? Obviously not good stuff but am I better doing footed pants or pants and socks etc
A onesie and then a shirt and pants are perfect. then they can change him into a shorter sleeve/longer sleeve shirt and longer pants/shorts depending on the weather. Through in a couple pairs of socks and you're good to go. Ryan's bag basically has 3 lots of everything in it (shirts, onsies, pants)

- They are willing to try cloth so for those of you who do cloth at daycare how do you manage it?
it's easier than you think. I drop off his clean nappies in the morning and they put the dirty ones in one of those reusable grocery bags for pickup in the afternoon. They generally put pooy nappies in a bread bad to contain the drama. Ryan's only there a half day but 3 nappies does him. I also provided one packet of sposies just in case I had a day when I didn't get the laundry done or he ran out of cloth

- Any other tips would be welcome
if you are doing EBM I would suggest taking in the container that you heat the bottle up in and tell them how long to heat the bottle up for in general. I think the rest of Ryan's DC has formula so it's a bit of a novelty to have EBM.

Also - I've found that having one larger bag with a shoulder strap to be really useful. So - I walk in to pick Ryan up, chuck his empty bottle in his lunch bag - his lunch bag into his bigger bag, roll up his bag with the dirty nappies and tuck that into the big bag as well and put the whole thing over my shoulder. This leaves both hands free with which to carry Ryan out to the car. The first week was a nightmare before I figure this out - trying to balance three bags (lunchbag, nappy bag, cloths bag) and Ryan out of the centre! LOL

Good luck - it gets easier once you see how much they love interacting with the teachers, kids and playing with all the toys!

Thanks mollycat that all makes sense, I figured that cloth would be no harder than sposies. I'll have to time how long it takes to warm her bottles up I generally try with only about 30mL at the moment so that I'm not wasting heaps of milk.

I can imagine juggling all those bags would have been tricky. I'm planning on digging out a school bag to use which will hopefully be big enough!

You're right Esme - the only thing harder about cloth is getting the motivation to wash them and get them ready at night

Lol I know that feeling, in fact I'm saving up for some more so that it isn't so important to wash so frequently. Plus I'd like a bit of a stash
