Topic: No Poos? Posted: 30 October 2009 at 4:44pm |
How long is it ok for a BF baby to go between poos?
He's still having lots of wet nappies, and farts, but no poos for two days.

i have a feeling it can be about a week for bf babies before its a concern. Feel free to correct me anyone. I personally wouldnt be worried unless he seemed uncomfortable and constipated.

I think it can be anywhere between every feed to 10days from what I remember.
Although you won't want to be on the end of that nappy when it does happen

Yep if your baby is exclusively breastfed then "normal" can be anywhere from every feed - 10 days. 10 days is extreme though. I wouldn't worry until about a week, or if your baby shows signs of discomfort.

Isn't it always the way.
I started this post as DS was napping. Just woke up from that nap to find a very stinky man with super poos

my sister and laws baby goes every ten days religously - she just hopes she is at home when it happens as it is the kind of thing that requires 3 rinses in the bath to clean - it ends up around her nipples and armpits (the babies that is

We usually get a huge one every three-four days. Sam was an every feed kinda baby at first when he was on breastmilk but once on formula he was at least 2X daily and still is. Jamie does heaps of stinky farts for ages and gets quite grumpy and uncomfortable leading up to his poos. And man they are shockers when they come out!!

DD1 used to go 14 to 17 days between. Plunket / doctors refused to acknowledge it as an issue as it was still the right texture. As she got older she had big probs with constipation but is ok now (she is now 3.5).
DD2 goes once every 3 to 5 days generally and certainly doesn't seem uncomfe so that pattern is fine for her.

Before solids DD was usually only 1-2 times a week BUT they were impressive. Once she was eating more food it became daily so enjoy it while it lasts I'd say!

In the beginning my midwive (from South Africa) said once in every 21 days is even fine, just as long baby doesnt seem to be uncomfortable but that it is very very rare.
However when they start solids dont let them go over 7 days as such but start watching out on day 5 as such and look out for signs that they are uncomfortable. They usually need some more liquid so breastfeed more and if you formula feed they need more water in their diet.

The longest lil miss went was 15 days from memory. I took her to the doc on day 14 just to make sure she didn't have any blockages etc, and on day 15 she exploded. She regularly went at least 10 days in between tho.
The reason breastfed babies often don't poo as regularly as FF babies is that breastmilk is perfectly designed for their digestive system, so there are very few waste products left behind to be excreted.

Wow, I never knew it was as little as every 10 days! I guess I can stop freaking out when she hasn't pooed for 24 hours then!!!
