Topic: Musing Aloud - Infertility Thread Posted: 12 December 2006 at 4:07pm |
I know that this may offend some people, but I'm going to plow ahead anyway ...
I've been thinking about this, and wondering how much support there would be if we were to approach the OB ladies for an infertility thread.
Although we come under the umbrella of planning pregnancy, it's kind of a bit beyond that isn't it once you've been sitting around for a couple of years. The issues we're facing are different to those that someone who has been TTC for a month or 3 months is, or someone who has fallen pregnant as soon as they look at their partner, and we understand that as far as having our families, we're staring down the barrel of a gun.
It would sort of be a way to get together with other infertilies, or subfertiles and just talk about the weather, the latest book on our nightstand, recipes, or whatever, and, of course, TTC with our individual challenges ...and it's just a place we can find each other, and it kind of identifies us as a little different as well to those TTC. Trust me, getting your period at cycle 19 is a lot different to getting it at cycle 3.
I'm probably not explaining this in the best way possible, but if you do understand, let me know what you think ...

I think it is a good idea Ginger, and as you say, the issues you are facing are different to the ones that people who just start or are a couple of months down the track. It would also be valuable source of information for others that join to see what options there are, drugs, assistance, IVF etc.
I think I might be starting to ramble...

Yup, I agree. I find the infertility forum on everybody.co.nz a great place to go as there are others that are sharing the same experiences. It's great to have a general TTC forum, but I agree that the experiences of those that have long term fertility issues are different.

Ginger I think it is a great idea. With Lou going through IFV I think I have learnt so much about it as it has come from the person that was going through it.

U have my support and i agree there is nothing harder than seeing someone get pregnant from just basically looking at their partner. I sometimes feel pissy when a friend can say they are gonna get pregnant and they do when it took us a year and fertility drugs to get there.
I say heck yeh to the infertility forum!

I think it's a great idea, I hope (not to be horrible, but you know what I mean) that I don't become in that situation, but it's good to know there's somewhere to come for advice and a friendly face (so to speak).
Smart thinking, I think a lot of people could benefit from it, and from a newbies perspective, I think it's a great idea.

I agree, it is a great idea. I know people on the infertility threads on everybody and they find it really supportive. You still get lurkers, but it means that you can come together and discuss things with others in the same situation.

Thanks so much for all your input everyone - I really appreciate it! I'll email off to the OB ladies over the weekend and see if they support the idea, which hopefully, they will!
And emz, I doubt that anyone would take your comment as being horrible. It is something that everyone TTC wishes, and everyone who *has* got problems wished themselves as well I imagine!

I think its a great idea too. We TTC for 12 months which I know is alot less than some of you but I completely agree that the issues you are facing are alot different to those just starting out. It means you would have a close knit group rather than people popping in and then out again 1 cycle later with a BFP (which is pretty darn disheartening). Plus its easier than having to explain everything over and over again as most people TTC for longer periods and who are having treatments etc know the jargon etc.
Go for it ginger- you've got alot of support for it on here.

Just a little update -
I emailed the OHbaby ladies at the weekend and raised the idea of an infertility thread, and asked them to pop in and have a look at this topic to see our thoughts and feelings.
Hopefully they'll give it some thought.

Ginger I think it's a wonderful idea! I can only imagine how frustrating it is to people who have spent years TTC to have people pop in the TTC thread one minute and in the Pregnancy threads the next.
The more support people can give and recieve to ALL situations would only benefit this already fantastic website
Come on OB Bosses!
