spill what seems like a lot without it being reflux?

I sometimes wonder if Lexie has reflux because she has a few of the symptoms but then other times I think she must not because she isn't upset all the time or anything. But she does seem to spill a fair amount, Like this morning after a feed over the next hour or so she spilled 7 times some of them seemed to be fairly big spills too, these didn't seem to upset her at all though. She wasn't uncomfortable between spills so I didn't think it was trapped wind? But of course I could be wrong.

What do you think?

I think so. My DD spills lots too. Its messy, and sometimes there is lots of it and sometimes it's really chunky & clotted. But she's happy as can be and growing like a weed, so all good, I think.

Also, she's just started spilling less in the last week (still plenty, but less than before) so Lexie mightn't be too far off getting better. Apparently the valve at the bottom of the oesophagus is not properly developed in some babies and milk leaks back out of the stomach until it finished developing - which would explain why DD is spilling a bit less there days. It's perfectly normal, apparently, unless it's causing the baby pain.

She's also spilled several times in front of both the MW and the plunket nurse and they've said it's fine

Hope that helps!

Elias spilled loads. There was a period where he used to spill what looked like his entire feed everytime I fed him, I even rang Healthline I was so worried, however he didnt (and does not) have Reflux, he was just an extremely spilly baby.

I recall someone on here said if you get a teaspoon and fill it with water then put it on the bench it looks like loads, but in reality it isnt, so hopefully it looks like she is bringing up much more than she really is.

Oh and Elias is still quite spilly .. but he is getting better with age.

Gabrielle was the same as this - but she was a very contented and happy baby. The spilling was quite gross though - she went through bibs like no tomorrow, and anyone brave enough for a cuddle usually got a lil baby badge as a souvenier

She definitly grew out of it though - around 9-12 months.

Eww and the cot sheets too - I used to put a mattress protector underneath her sheets and a clean sheet under the protector because she would spill in her cot too - so then at night I could just whip off the dirty sheets without too much hassle.

Tane has never been spilly at all which was a nice change lol

Bex, if you're ever worried abou how much she is spilling, go measure out a teaspoon of water and spill it on the bench. It looks like a lot, but really it's not. Maybe do it a couple of times until the water on the bench looks like the amount of milk she is spilling, then you can gauge with a measurement how much she is actually spilling.

And yes, I think babies can spill without it being reflux. Like T_Rex said, the valve in the osepha, osophe, osofa....ah crud can't spell it...that thingee anyway, it's under developed and doesn't always close off to keep the milk down in their tummy.

As long as she's growing and not in pain then all is well.

My DS2 has reflux but DS1 was incredibly spilly but happy. He would spill on everyone and everything.

While reading cryingoverspiltmilk.com I saw that lots of spilly babies have what is classed as "uncomplicated reflux" which means they are happy as larry but spilly.

it can be quite normal and the spoon trick is awesome. i had no idea about that. i do know mack spilt heaps and at about 6 weeks all of a sudden things changed and it all became really apinful and he ended up with full blown reflux. some kids seem to not be in pain until after 6 weeks though i dont know the reason. just keep an eye on her but im sure things will be sweet.

Infant Gaviscon is available over the counter at the pharmacy. If you wanted, you could give it ago and see if it helped.
I wish I'd thought of that before DS was diagnosed with reflux at 4mths. One day of gaviscon and new baby.

Thanks for this Bex - I am thinking the same thing about Liam. He seems to spill a lot (although not as much in the last 48 hours) but doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. Hopefully he is just a bit spilly and nothing else!

Gaviscon and losec etc doesnt actually stop the spilling - it just stops acid coming up - so if Bubs is spilling and not upset i am unsure how much effect Gaviscon will have

My girl screamed even when she hiccuped as she was bringing up acid

DS has slient reflux, so not much spilling just the hiccup type thing followed by screaming. Gaviscon is also supposed to thicken the contents a bit and stop it coming up. Either way the Dr said give it a go, you'll know if it works, and it did.

Thats why the gaviscon works for you though as your baby actually has reflux so the gaviscon is neutralising the acid stopping the crying.

Gaviscon thicken the formula slightly but if you baby is a hppy spilly then I wouldn't worry too much. Gaviscon can actually upset a spilly baby more as it can make it harder and more uncomfortable to spill.

Okay so just now Lexie spilled again and it also came out her nose... is this a cause for worry? Oh and she also seems to choke on her milk at the start of every feed, she will feed for 30 seconds and then she will start choking, so I sit her up and pat her on the back and she seems okay almost straight away but this is every feed.

Bex are you BF? If she's struggling a bit at teh beginning of the feed could you have a fast letdown that's a bit much for her atm?

Where's weegee with the kellymom links?

(That's just the main page, but there's so much good info, have a read around and see if anything helps)

Maybe the teat is too fast?

Would have given me a fright coming out the nose as well! Might still be nothing though, just the angle she was at IYGWIM - you know, like when you laugh so much coke comes out your nose?

Have you tried calling Healthline?

what teat size is she in hun? She might be gettin ger milk too fast, hence the coughing and spluttering, and then milk out the nose.
If she isnt bothered by her spilling then dont worry, but if she starts getting very fussy, wont lie on her back, tries to hunch herself into a ball etc, then get her checked out for reflux.

To start with isabella was just a "happy chucker" but then the relfux symptoms started at about 8 weeks old.

ETA- Bella is still really spilly, and her reflux has settled down HEAPS, now she just chucks up, no crying and pain with it.

She is on number 2 teats (Avent), I've noticed sometime she will refuse to lie on her back and sometimes has a bit of a howl after a spill (getting more common) but it isn't all the time. Thanks SJ, I have her 6 week checkup tomorrow so will probably mention to the doc then

lol....Leah is still on number one teets!

LEah was really spilly, well I think the was. She wasn't bothered by it, i just got annoyed as I had to change my clothes all the time. She hit 10weeks and all went to custard...she was put on losec. the GP explained that with all the spilling, the acid finally wore away at the throat/stomach....still dont know how reflux works.

When she was BF, milk came out of her nose on a few occasions. she didnt even notice.

Mum to the Gorgeous Leah!
