Topic: its all turned to custard... Posted: 05 February 2010 at 9:39am |
Ok a week ago I had a 12wk old baby who was sleeping 10-12hr nights and this week we're back to going to sleep at 8pm waking at 12.30 and 4.30am for feeds.
Have tried leaving her a bit to see if she would go back to sleep without feeding but she gets really annoyed and gulps like mad when i put her on.
is it a growth spurt and do i just have to wait for her to go back to a better night routine or is there anything i can do?
feeling rather tired
disco:(

Yep there is a growth spurt around 12 weeks, think you just need to ride it out I'm afraid

Yep - just ride it out. DS went through a long phase of doing 10-11 hours at night, but then started waking again around that age- once or twice a night.
Now he likes to mix it up - sleeps through a couple of nights and wakes up a couple...
My philosophy is to take every night he sleeps through as a treat, and not to count on it - that way it's always a lovely surprise waking up in the morning!

Ella did exactly the same thing- was nearly sleeping through the night by 3 months, then growth spurt hit and starting waking up several times in the middle of the night...........however (and you probably don't want to hear this) she never slept through the night again until she turned 2

We had the same, now she's waking 2-4 times a night which is just fantastic when I've just started working (almost) full time

As long as there is hope in sight of a few decent nights sleep. shouldnt complain as she's been great so far. how long do growth spurts normally last?

Yeap afraid to say changes just keep happening! My second slept through 11 hours from 10 to 17 weeks then started waking 3 hourly, then slept through again then reverted to 4 hourly, then started sleeping through again and now we are back to 4 to 5 hourly wakings. She seems to do a week of sleep throughs then stop for a week.
Spurts usually last 48 hours to a week.

Same with Jude - Slept through the night for over a month from 10 weeks onwards. Then we decided to start sleeping him on his side to help combat flat head - he started waking once a night. Then we went on holiday for four weeks over Christmas and was still waking mostly just once a night but when we got back he started waking twice a night! Now has nights where he wakes once, nights where he wakes twice and very occasionally nights where he will sleep through. I'm just going with the flow - he sorted out sleeping through the night once on his own, hopefully he will do it again. In the meantime I'm feeding him when he wakes. Luckily, he has always gone straight back to sleep at night - has never been one for wanting to play in the middle of the night...... Super glad about that!

Disco, I just wanted to let you know that as of a couple of nights ago we now have a 12 week old baby who also has gone from sleeping 9pm till 7am to waking at 12 and 4. I am totally blaming the growth spurt - don't worry - you are not alone!!
Oh and also I should add that Sam did this when she was a baby also and after a week or so she just started magically sleeping through again

Tis my philosophy too my 10mth still wakes atleast once a night regularly. If she sleeps through it is definetly treat - a well-deserved one We've had phases of sleeping through 12hours for a couple of months, then waking 1-5 times for a few weeks, then back to sleeping through etc etc.. She seems to have settled on waking once which I can live with.
Just keep in mind it is completely normal baby behaviour to wake several times during the night. At 12 weeks, the vast majority of babies are still waking regularly. I get you on the being tired though

Thanks everyone for your replies!
Makes me feel better knowing it's all "normal". Was honored with a 8-6.30am sleep last night! although i kept waking up, expecting to have to get up and feed but nope. a few grumbles but no waking. i also stuck her in her first gogo bag last night. so not sure if that helped too. yet again so many variables eh!
babies eh!

just when they lull you into a false sense of security they throw a curve ball! blame growth spurts on EVERY abnormal behaviour until they start teething...then you blame that. Once all the teeth are there you start thinking about growth spurts again...when I think they just like being brats
Fingers crossed your sleeper sleeps again...mine didnt

is also normal for them to have disturbed sleep around 5 months because of a developmental stage. Spencer was sleeping through at 4 months then at 5 it turned to custard but by 6 he was sleeping through consistently again. I won't talk to you about Kyle cos you might get worried that you will never sleep again
