I know this is a very individual thing, but I'd like to know what people are using for a contraceptive.
I'm in a bit of a bind and really lost as to which way to turn.

Mini pill is a no go for me and so is Depo due to risk of drying up milk and also depression issues.
I'm allergic to latex so condoms a no go.
IUD/Marina - I am apprehensive about for reasons I can't really put on a public forum.

Any other ideas?

They have alternatives to latex condoms now, thats what we used. I am also badly allergic to latex! They're quite expensive so see if your GP will perscribe them to start with. You'll get a script for like, 20 boxes :P

Not sure of your reasons for being wary of the IUD but its worked well for me, yes its heavy periods for a few mths but they settle down and I really love not having to give birth control a second thought - hate condoms and due to this I'm rather irresponsible with them lol.

The IUD was quick and easy to get put in and my cycle is completely natural so as soon as its out we can start TTC.

I've been wondering about this too. I don't want anymore kids and don't wanna have to take the pill for years. DP refuses to get a vasectomy, grrr i had to bloody go through child birth twice. lol. I thought about the Depo but heard too many horror stories. Not keen on an IUD either. I think i'll find out about the implant, even though the thought grosses me out. lol. I'll take the mini pill for now.

DP wanted a vasectomy and I think he's still considering it but he's only 35 and we only have one child so there are a lot of people trying to stop hm from doing it. Looked at the snip.co.nz ebsite last night, $395 (cheap) to get it done by laser surgery...only takes half an hour. Very permanent though as reversals are not very successful.

The implant is like $300, but will last for 4 years for me. I can live with that.

Dh will only be 25 when we have finished having kids so we have looked into getting the implant which will last till we are 30ish then freezing his sperm before he gets the snip. i have 8 years of uni left so very unlikely we'll have more kids but if me and both boys died in a car accident or something, then 30 is very young to be left with nothing and no chance to have a new family. the prizes for freezing sperm are quite resonable if you worried bout cutting your options (no pun intended). there is a "DH is getting chopped" thread (or something along those lines) where i put a link up on the prices and stuff :)

Ive only known a couple of people to use implant and they ballooned in weight (like 20kgs extra weight)

Carin - who said Depo dries up milk? Ive had it all my babies and if anything with my second i had WAY too much milk the whole time, and even at 7months when i wanted some drinks and missed a couple of feeds i almost ended up with mastitis again.

Just not something ive ever heard of before

Third times a charm.......lol

just did some research on net

quoted

Can I use it if I am breastfeeding?
Depo-Provera can be used safely in women who are breastfeeding. Long-term studies of babies whose mothers used Depo-Provera while breastfeeding found no bad effects.

Im in the same boat as you, im running out of options what else is there for a breastfeeding mum?
The mini pill, injection and mirena make me spot non stop, tried combination pill and that dried me up so had to stop and build up my supply again, hate condoms and dont want anything permanent because we want another bubs in a year.
At the moment abstinence sounds good to me:)

Lou - MW said Depo affects milk (she didn't say dried it up but I assumed thats what she meant). She also said it is horrible for womens bones and is well known for causing osteoporosis and it also affects moods, which with my history is a bad idea.
It's also known for makes women put on weight.

At least with the implant if it has adverse effects I can have it taken out.

I have been on Depo before, years ago. It was ok but I did get some side effects.
