Hi All, i thought i had the ovulation thing understood and clear in my head, but after looking into it further i'm getting more and more confused.

So far i've been told the following:
1. count 14 days back from the first day of your last period to find out the day you ovulate.
2. Usually the 12th day of your cycle (or ther abouts) is your ovulation day.

If i wasn't taking my temp every day, which of the above (if any) would be the correct day to figure out my approx ovulation day?

I've done a calendar in fertilty friend and it gives me a totally different day. Answers, suggestions please. Thanks

Ok, so there is no "right" answer.

In a "Normal" 28 day cycle with a "normal" 14 day Luteal Phase (ovulation to period) then you would ovulate on day 14 (from the first day of bleeding).

However, we dont all have 28 day cycles and we dont all have 14 day luteal phases.....

A normal Luteal phase can be anywhere from 11-17 days (which is also considered the normal range to conceive) if it is less than there is a luteal phase defect (most commonly from low progesterone) and it will make it extremely hard to concieve as you get your period before there is time for implantation (generally 7-11 days after ovulation but sometimes earlier or a little later).

Soooooo, what I would suggest if you dont want to take your tempreture every day then count back about 20 days from the first day of your period and time sex from then at least every second day(ie cycle is 30 days, start having sex from cycle day 10). I would say keep it up for at least 10 days but until period if you can...

Gosh, that was a bit long winded LOL sorry if you knew most of that but figured it was easier to just put in as much info as possible!

Also pay attention to your cervical mucous and note when you notice egg white type mucous as this is your most fertile mucous and generally if all is well ovulation should be a day or two.

HTH

If you have an average cycle, which not many of us seem to, your cycle would be 28 days and you would ovulate (OV) on day 14 (or Cycle day (CD) 14). Your Lutel phase (LP) would be 14 days.

If you have a 26 day cycle and an average LP then you would OV on CD 12. Therefore both the above could be true.

However, if you are not average your cycle could be longer or shorter and your LP could be longer or shorter. For example, my cycle can fluctuate from 26-33 days and my LP is about 10 days. (Your LP length is usually fairly consistent even if your cycle is not)

If you take your temperature every morning, your temperature will drop just after you OV. If you don't want to do this you can make a rough guess and have sex (BD) every day or second day around OV time.

How long is your cycle? I'd count 14 days back from the end of your shortest cycle and start   BDing a couple of days before that. Continue every second day until 10 days before the end of your longest cycle and you'll have covered your bases.

So if your last few cycles were 26, 28, 30 and 32 days start on CD 10 and continue till CD 22.

Another way to predict OV is CM . Have a look at the 'how to chart' thread or the Fertility Friend (FF) tutorials for more on this.
You can also buy tests called OPK tests which work a bit like a PG test except they tell you when your about to OV. Again there is useful info on this on FF.

Hope this helps!
