Topic: feed change play sleep Posted: 24 December 2009 at 10:48am |
so this is the plunket guideline right..
can you tell me what a typical day routine looks like for a almost 5 month old ??
how long do you leave it to Breastfeed after they wake ?
do you just feed on waking right away ??
usually my bubs feeds before a sleep... should i change that ??
i am sooo confused

I have learnt that you should do whatever works best for you and your baby, well at least I try and follow that.
Ben is 5.5mths and I usually offer a bf when he wakes, sometimes he takes it sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't then I usually wait a while, maybe even 1/2hr and offer again unless he shows signs of wanting it before that. If he feeds one side right after a nap then often he doesn't want the other side for up to an hour later. If he gets a bit overtired before I get a chance to put him down for a nap then I often try feeding him then too, he doesn't always fall asleep on the breast but at least it seems to calm him enough so that he can go to sleep.
Sorry that probably isn't much help is it?

Do what works! The theory behind feeding after they wake is that it is more consistent with the adult model of wake up - eat breakfast. It is also meant to be about the baby not associating feeding with sleep. But, at 5 months, they're still little!
From memory, I'd feed soon after, but not immediately after waking (usually about 1/4-1/2 hour after waking) then play then sleep. Sometimes if he seemed extra hungry, I'd feed again before sleep, or if he'd had an extra long wake time. That said, I tried not to feed to sleep at 5 months (though I had a dummy addict so he was happy with plastic!)

Yep, do what works! DD is 9mths and we always feed before sleeps.. basically feed whenever. I do and have done whatever suits DD and I, regardless of whether or not it is in line with the current parenting trend.
Think of it this way - your child is not going to be damaged from not following Plunket routine guidelines

Something to remember is, you are trying to raise a child to become a functioning adult. So in a few years, when they are off to school, or after that, off to uni, it wont really matter whether they were fed to sleep, on the bottle, cesarean delivery....
Do what works for now is my mantra, while still keeping things that you want for when they are older. ie a sense of being respected, of being listened to, being able to work thru problems etc.

Just watch that if you do the play feed sleep direction is that you don't over tire them before you feed them to put them to sleep, can muck up sleep.
I have done both ways & until I did the switch with my daughter I was constantly over tiring her before the feed so therefore her sleeps sucked big time.

I have not read the other answers but Jake is still in a feed change play feed sleep routine.
Only difference now is one of those feeds in each sequence is solids and his last sequence of the day is feed, change, play, feed, play, bath, feed, sleep.
My little guy just likes to snack it out.
As I am sure some have said above, whatever works best for you and baby!

I agree, do what works for you and your baby. I do change, feed, play, sleep cos usually he has a full nappy once he wakes from a sleep or nap.
Sometimes I can hold the feed off for half an hour if he has only napped for 40 odd minutes.

I try and do feed, play sleep as I have also found that if DD feeds too late it sucks her sleep time.
Doesn't always work though as she is sometimes not hungry or is extra hungry and decides she wants more on sleep time. Exception is at night when she'll have a big feed before sleep and wake an hour later to have top before going back to sleep.
She usually feeds about 10 -15 mins from waking.
So while I try my best, we also have some flexibility.

I tried to follow this but have had to put an extra small 'comfort' feed in the end before sleep as he won't go to sleep without it. He sleeps very well so its working for us this way.

Go with the flow is what I've learned!
I usually do change/feed/play/sleep as she is pretty hungry soon after she wakes. But sometimes she just falls asleep straight after the feed without any play!
I'm slowly learning that every day is different too, we have our strict night routine - bath just after 7pm, feed until she crashes, then wake her at 7am and feed every 3 hours during the day. But inbetween the 3 hourly feeds anything goes! She sometimes even feeds every 1-2 hours.
My advice - learn to read your baby's signs and go with the flow!
