Topic: Crawling Posted: 16 December 2009 at 3:07pm |
My son is 11 months old and has just started to roll occassionally. Im just wondering if there are any other mums out there whose child didnt move at all for a long time?
We have been referred to a pediatrician but have been warned that my the time we make it up the waiting list it could be a few months.
I swear I will hit the next person who asks "Oh, hes still not crawling yet?" and also the comments "Oh, you wait till he moves, you'll wish he sat still again!"
At the moment I am desperate for him to even roll! Hes getting fustrated to not reach his toys etc..

My friends baby didn't crawl for ages but when he did he went from crawling to walking to running in a matter to three weeks.
Kids do things in their own time. Your boy is probably just concentrating on mastering some other skill.
I bet it is very annoying hearing people ask you those questions all the time. I'd try think up some smart line to reply to like "No he's too busy staying cute" or something.

Jody started rolling everywhere at about 11 months(she was rolling very occassionally before she realised she could roll over and over then there was no stopping her), then at almost 13 months she started commando crawling.
I got a bit sick of people who told me she wasn't crawling because I carry her everywhere, lol, how else am I supposed to move her from her bedroom?
Some babies are just laid back.
Don't worry about plunket etc telling you there *must* be something wrong if he didn't crawl at exactly 7.5 months, all bubbas are different.
Meanwhile, Jody sleeps like an angel to make up for her lack of movement.

Haha thats a good one, Im so using that this weekend when the in laws come!
I get that all the time because I use the principles of attachment parenting so people (mostly uninformed) assume that he must be clingy
thanks, its nice to hear from other mums whose children are similar.

My girl started crawling 2 days ago (she's almost 10 months). She hasn't rolled and I stressed out about it for a while, especially when I got the "word" from Plunket about her lack of movement. They told me I should move all her toys out of reach (um good in theory but not so good when your baby is crying cause they can't reach their toys).
She really didn't show many signs that she was ready to crawl, it happened literally overnight. I'm not sure she will roll either.

Gabrielle started commando crawling about 5 days before her first birthday - so only about 2 weeks ago!
I so know what you mean about the people who say stupid things about it. Gabrielle would get so frustrated that she would just scream and scream and scream if she couldn't reach something. It was very wearing on my nerves.
She only rolled occasionallly up till about a month or so ago ie like once a month or so from 8 months onwards , and she still only really rolls when I put her in her cot.
I also got the hard word a bit from Plunket till I showed the Plunket nurse what happens when you put something out of her reach - the screams were deafening! My Plunket nurse also said unhelpful things like I should encourage her more. Like I actually liked listening to my child get frustrated and wasn't already encouraging her to try and move. Grrr.
Gabrielle has been very slow to do other physical stuff though so I am not expecting anything much in terms of walking from her yet. She didn't hold her head up till 16 weeks, and only managed to hold her own weight on her legs (stand up with me holding her) at 8 months. She was so slow at weight baring that she had x-rays to check if there was any physical issues with her legs.
Hope things get better for you soon.

omg Shelt, your post is basically the story of my life for the last couple of months! My boy is the exact same as your daughter.
Plunket came around today and I showed them first hand what happens when he gets put on his tummy with no toys to play with = As jano1 said, good in theory but not so good when you have a screaming child and assignments due/exam week!!
So after he screamed bloody murder for a few seconds they quickly changed their tune and decided it was no good for either of us for him to cry it out on the floor in frustration!
The child developmental therapist did say that children who are a bit slower physically tend to have a lot happening in their brains and generally have a higher IQ than those who are up and running early (of course they all catch up sooner or later).

Its like reading about my own boy - he's a bit too laidback for his own good I think! He has done everything on the 'slow' side of things (lifting head, sitting, rolling, standing). He is 11 months and is not crawling and has only just learnt to bear weight on his legs, but can't actually pull himself to stand
He too was all checked out by the paediatricians who deemed it to be mostly his personality (i.e lazy for a better word lol) and that he still had months to achieve these goals before they would get concerned. Basically, you can take almost 3-4 months either side of each developmental milestone and still be deemed 'normal', so please don't stress. But, yes, its incredibly frustrating when people make rude comments on something you are already so blatantly aware of!!

i find that a lot of babies who dont move early are more advanced in other things. i think they spend the time thinking and watching instead of doing.

Wow this sounds exactly like my DD! Shes 11 months next week, rolls quite a bit but isn't crawling or weight baring on her legs yet. That said, she is a whopping 12.5kg so I don't really blame her for finding it difficult to move her mass about! I just call her my big lazy baby and know that she'll get there in the end. I've also been told to let her get frustrated and cry when she can't reach her toys, but as a paed once called her "the loudest baby she'd ever come across" I don't think I'm keen to put the neighbours through that too often!

Please try not to worry (easier said than done I know!).
Ava is now 15 1/2 months. She rolled once at 5 months and then didn't roll again till 8 months. She started moving (i wont even call it commando crawling cause it was this funny one leg push type crawl lol) at 10 months and 'proper' crawling at 11 1/2 months. Ava didn't weight bear on her legs until probably 13 months and only started pulling to stand at that time too.
JUST the other day (18th Dec) she took her first steps!! Woo HOO! BUT in saying that, she would still rather crawl and has only walked 8 or so steps since then.
But i have had over a year of people making snarky comments about her not crawling or walking. It has really gotten to me and it got to the point where i actually stopped being friends with someone really close to me because she was such a b**ch about it.
Like others have said, your DS is probably more advanced in other things, ie, Ava started playing peek-a-boo really early on (about 5 months I think) and started playing 'ball' early too. She also tends to jabber alot. She has always been more of a talker.
