Humour me.

How long is your cycle - your natural cycle that is drug free (ie no Clomid or fertility drugs of any kind).

And how many of you accept that a cycle that lasts for more than 28 days is normal? How many of you accept that you might not necessarily cycle on Day 14?

I am reading about the Fertility Awareness Method and I am curious to see how 'institutionalised' we are in believing in a 28-day cycle as being normal, and that ov occurs on/around day 14.

Until today, this is what I believed. Thanks for humouring me.

before i ever went on OCP (when I was up to about 18), my cycles were pretty much 30-31 days. After 10 years of OCP they were more like 40-60 days, but I did manage to get UTD during a long cycle, and was using OPK's and noticed that I still had a 2 week luteal phase (so OV'd 14 days prior to next period starting).

I've only had one cycle post-baby (yay!), and that was 37 days (and once again think I had an approx 2 week luteal phase). I'm back on OCP now, so will be interesting to see what happens when I come off it again! It is common to have a 2 week luteal phase, but the follicular phase differs much more - so in most people, the follicular phase will be the part of your cycle that shortens/lengthens. However some people do still have shorter/longer luteal phases also! (and some infertility problems as you may be aware are related to having a luteal phase of less than 10 days).

I'm happy with longer cycles - means less periods a year to put up with (although of course means less chances to conceive!)

Off birth control my cycles vary wildly from 9 days to 56 days.

It makes TTC very difficult.

I have no idea what my cycles were like before I started using BC when I was 17, but since I started paying attention mine have been exactly 28 days.

I had been lurking on OB for a while before we started TTC Callum so I didn't expect my cycle to be 28 days - and was quite surprised when it was!

Well I have a cycle that is between 38 and 40 days. I have had an ultrasound and been tested for PCOS and I don't have that.

I haven't tried OPKS but Im fairly sure Im ovulating because I get EWCM each month at exactly the time I should be ovulating.

I think my cycle is fine because it is a cycle, it is pretty much the same every month. And I have been checked out. I have read while 28 days is the norm, not as many people have a 28 day cycle as you might think.

When I came off the pill my cycle was all over the place and it took me a while to settle down unfortunately I never counted the days between my periods before that but they always seemed normal enough.

I don't think it's a problem to have a longer cycle unless it's really long and no kind of pattern to it.

I have never been on BC and I have no idea what my cycle was like before TTC but I know it was very regular.
My cycles are 26 - 28 days with one 30 day cycle and I ovulate CD 13 / 14 ...So I guess I'm considered normal

lisaas101, you would benefit from charting :). And from what I am reading, drs will always assume you have PCOS if your cycle is longer than 28 days. Thank goodness you are clear. :)

LadyBee, your cycle sounds like mine - 26-28 days, and every now and then 30 days. I also ov CD 13, well this is going by this month anyway. :)

My understanding is anything from 26-35 days is considered normal.

I had been having regular 28-30 days cycles up until I started charting go figure, I do however have a 14 day LP and that hasn't changed, only the bit in between.

Its a problem if your cycle length varies from month to month or if it starts getting longer between afs especially if you are over 40 as that's a sign things are slowing down.

It's annoying because what you read varies, I have read that up to 35 days is ok, then I have read up to 40 is ok, I don't think doctors really know! But for the moment I have had tests and things seem to be happening ok for me so we shall see.... doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it.

Mine was always 35 days before I went on the pill. No idea what day I ovulated - but I'd presume it was 14 days before AF, not day 14 of my cycle. I'm pretty sure its the regularity rather than the length thats most important isn't it?

After 9 years on the pill I had a 26 day cycle and then got UTD on the next cycle, so no idea what they are like now.

Yes, from my understanding, it's the regularity that is important, not the length. Some of the women in this book I am reading are getting regular 60 day cycles but are still having 14 day luteal phases, so they are considered just fine! It just means less chances a year to conceive I guess.

When i first started having Af it was a 30 day cycle as i have gotten older its gotten shorter now it averages 29 days but i can get Af anything from 26 days to 45 days. Interestingly the length i bleed for has gotten chorter now down to 3 from the 7 when i first started.

Hmm, seems I'm the only text book person. Mine have always been 27 days on the dot and all 3 pregnancies were conceived smack on that 14 day mark.

Before BCP (10 years on it) I don't recall exactly how long my cycles were but I know they weren't 28 days - from what I remember they were 30ish. After coming off BCP, I had 3 cycles - 35, 35 & 60 days, so not regular at all but I guess coming off BCP had something to do with that too.
