Topic: Toilet Training Posted: 05 November 2006 at 10:21am |
I was wondering with toilet training.
Did any of you use a potty then toilet or just go straight to training in the toilet?
Haleighs 13 months, and we got her a potty but she hates it, but when I go to the toilet she just has to follow me in and she watches me intently and giggles.
I know when she's going to do wees or poos as she usually squats for a wee while the goes back to doing what she was doing.
We were thinking seen as it is getting warmer now we might get her some wee undies and let her get used to them and see how we go from there.
Has anyone else got any great hints and tips on toilet training?

we are training Jake at the moment. we bought him a potty and he took one look and started dragging it around and using it like a stool. Bought him a little seat that fits in the loo and he liked it, but didn't like the way his legs dangled so we put a stool in front for him to rest his legs on. Now he is good and doesn't need that stool. Anyway, he sits and goes when we ask him, but still has accidents once or twice a day.
as a reward he gets a stamp on his hand, or up his arm. We are planning to get him a star chart once he is having full dry days. To tell the truth, people have said that we may have been starting a bit early. But we figure it's quite hot here, we have a new washing machine, and he's outside most of the time anyway. I think we will be a while training him, while others i know have started later and had more success in a few days.
Personally I would say she is tyoo young, but then i don't know her, so it's a bit difficult to judge. if she is outside anyway, i would say go for it. Save you nappies!

I was told when they know they are about to go that they are ready to try.
And she knows when she is about to go, if she has no nappy on sh usually runs onto the balcony (gross I know but better there than my carpet) and goes outside.
So I was thinking maybe its time to teach her how to go to the toilet when she needs to go, or maybe start with sticking her potty by the door to the balcony? to see if she'll try it then.
I thought seen as it starting to get warm it's a good time to start her.

Hannah didn't like the potty either, we went for a small seat to go on our toilet seat (about $20 at baby stores) and she was fine with that - didn't feel like she was gonna fall in! We started about 20 months, I guess the biggest down-side about them being ready early is that you have to be on hand to assist climbing and wiping for a long long time.... but then, you've gotta wipe it sometime

I know I was out of nappies by 18 months and out of night nappies at 2 years so they can be trained early. But I did live in brisbane where there weather was nice and warm all year round.
Andrew started with the potty but preferred the toilet. He doesn't have a seat thing as he is used to the little toilets at daycare that he just sits on the big toilet at home. We have only had one fall in the toilet.

Might as well try it!
Becks, what a dream child you must have been Hannah is TTed in the daytime but definitely not at nights. She has no inclination to. I've started saying things like, "when you are 3, you probably won't need to have a nappy at night time" but we just get little comments back like "i like doing wees in my nappy"

Those toilet seats are only $8 at the warehouse. Also, what we found, you need two. one for at home, and another for when you go to town and to rellies houses. Jake WOULD NoT go at his nana's place, but once we put the seat down, no probs,.

Yes Liz, I had forgotten that bit. We just took our one when we went out, and definitely made sure we didn't forget to take it on holidays! lol
Now we are up to stools... one for the upstairs toilet, downstairs toilet, downstairs basin, upstairs bathroom.... haha maybe she should just grow taller

we went straigth to the toilet too, I wasnt keen on the potty and so didnt really push it and kobe wanted to use the toilet so it wasnt an issue.
I have to agree though at that age she may be a little young and Ive read and been told that the ones who are trained to early/young are often the ones that have trouble when at school, they can revert back to wetting themselves. Just knowing when they need to go doesnt always mean they are ready, there are a number of signs to look for. In saying all that there is no harm in trying her and as you say with the warmer weather it will be much easier.

I'm in no hurry to get her trained, I just wanted to start soon because we would like her out of day nappies when the next one arrives, night time doesnt bother me, she only goes through 2 nappies in the day time anyway.
My karitane nurse said it wasnt to early to give it a try, as she is a very independant girl.
She hates wearing nappies aswell, she tries to pull them off all the time at home.

That was me my mum told me I hated nappies - but also the heat over there was alot different to here. Yeah mum loved me for that but for other things maybe not. I was the child that climbed out of her cot at the hosptial after having grommets put in and the nurses lost me - my mum freaked and they ended up finding me in the kitchen drinking milk. I was discharged that day.
If you have a potty show it to her and see what she thinks of it and if she likes it let her use it. They aren't all that expensive and with another one on the way you can always use it with the next if Haleigh doesn't like it.

Our potty only cost $5, and she liked it for the first week then she thought it was more fun throwing it round the house lol.
It sits in the toilet cause someoine told me to try sit her on there when I go, but she still didnt like it.

good luck! If you can get her trained that's great I wouldn't have even thought about it when Ella was her age and she's still not trained yet, I'm waiting until the summer (if it ever arrives lol)

Hey Mo, good idea to try to get Haleigh used to the idea of toilet or potty before the next bundle comes along, we found Ashlyn was just ready when we had Anastasia so it all went out the window but she is coming along great now. She wont use the potty but I got an insert for the toilet seat bout $5 from K-Mart which makes her feel secure sitting on the big toilet. We are going thru lots of nickers and pants each day but its worth doing it at their pace. I spoke to someone at the Parent & child show and they said they can be up to 3 1/2 before they recognise when they need to go. Give it a go you cant loose anything and good luck!
