Hi all,
I have an appointment with a Gyno next week RE infertility and am wondering what the deal is with the appointment - what is going to happen???? what is the usual run of events when you see a gyno regarding infertility????

Any info will be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hi Baysmum,

I'm not too sure, but when I went to see a specialist for that, she did a physical and asked lots of questions re temps and cycles, I had to get bloods tests done and the husband did a fertility test. This was to determine what the problem may be. Also when I had my laproscopic surgery to check to endo, and see if there was anything in particular wrong, they also did a dye-flush to make sure there were no blockages, and I'd previously had an ultrasound to check for abnormalities in my uterus. My specialist *was* an endo specialist though, with infertility being the off-shoot, so I'm not too sure what would be the go for a specific fertility specialist. I know this isn't very helpful, but I thought I'd start the ball rolling. I think it's pretty standard to make sure that things are working properly, cycles are good etc and hubby is producing plenty of 'boys' (as mine calls them!) - because it's the easy stuff to eliminate, without getting invasive.

Hi ginger,
Thanks for your reply hopefully there is nothing wrong with us and the reason is just out of whack cycles!? I had some hcg bloods done the other day as i had had 3 + hpts and AF was 11 days late and i had every other symptom BUT my levels wernt good so the nurse seems to think that i should come in to docs to discuss ectopics (whether the nurse thinks i have that or not im not sure! but she made it seem like an urgency) so i will be going tommorow as AF is still a no show and still have all the symptoms so i have no idea!!??

Do you mind me asking if you got to the bottom of your problems with your visits to the gyno???

Well, at this stage she believes it was endo that was the problem. I had it on my ovaries and my bowel. Also the husband's fertility test came back and was doubtful in 2 areas, and she thinks that the two things combined were the cause of our problems. She gave me a big smile as I left my post-op follow up and said to ring when I was pregnant. I'm holding onto her confidence and hoping she's seen this enough times to know that we'll work now. Everything is crossed anyways!

The risk with an ectopic is it rupturing from what I understand. Very odd that no AF after 11 days though. You probably just want it to arrive now so that you can start a new cycle!!

I'm thinking of you though - two weeks until your appointment! It'll be a long two weeks too I bet - when I was waiting for my surgery after my specialist appointment, I was like a cat on a hot tin roof!

Hi Amber.

Well, when I went to the specialist for the first time, my GP had already arranged for a sperm analysis for my DH - This is the easiest test to do, and can often provide the answers (if there is male infertility issues of course).  So the specialist had those results, and then asked specific questions of me - cycle length, all that kind of thing.

Then I had bloods done at specific times in my cycle to check if I was ovulating, and to check hormone levels etc.

Then I had an ultrasound to check for PCOS and other problems.

Then they put me on clomiphene.  It  wasnt the greatest for me, but lots of people have success with it.  I had an u/s on one of my clomiphene cycles to monitor, but other than that I just had regular blood tests each month to check hormones, and see if I ovulated etc.

Thats about all my experience with fertiliy specialists - I found my specialist wonderful, but theres nothing else he can do for me now unless I can scrape together money for IUI or IVF.  So dh and I are on our own, back to the old fashioned 'just have sex' method.

It was great talking to you too!

Well, I first saw my specialist in December last year.  The original plan was to monitor my cycle with bloods for one cycle, then have the ultrasound to check for PCOS the second cycle, then start clomid the 3rd cycle.

It didnt quite work that way for me, because I was unknowingly pregnant (just) at my first appt.  I had the first set of bloods before I knew.  Then I miscarried on Christmas Day, and didn't feel up to dealing with it all for a while.  Then I went back, and got my u/s done (just before O), then found out was was pregant again, then miscarried again.  Then I started clomid the next cycle.  So it took me a few months longer to start clomid than originally planned.

I am no longer on clomid - I had 3 clomid cycles, then an hsg to check my tubes, then another 2 clomid cycles.  After the hsg, before the 4th and 5th cycle of clomid I went to see my specialist for the last time.  He told me he would give me 2 more chances on clomid, but that was it.  And he didnt actually hold out much hope.  Unfortunately, he was right.  So we are just back to the 'having sex' method now, and trying not to take things quite so seriously - as I said to you on msn - the control freak inside can be rather hard to contain!  haha.

< language=> Hi Baysmum,

I too see a fertility specialist, bascially over the last year they have had me do an u/s for confirmation of PCOS, ive done 3 rounds on clomophine & do temp charts. Basically all they want to know is what you have been doing in your attempt to get pregnant (apart from the obvious) and to check you for things such as endo & pcos & low sperm count etc.

From my experience i had a m/c 26 months ago which started off with low HCG levels & faint positive tests (not to say that this is going to happen to you I hope not) but i also had transviginal u/s to see if infact i was having an eptopic pregnancy. My friend had positive pregnancy test & her hormone levels were slow to rise & they did the same type of u/s on her & were even pressuring her to have a D&C as they were certain that she had missed carried, well she held off for another couple of weeks & when she went back there was my nephew heartbeat & all & is now a healthy 4 year old.

Good luck & hope it results in a positive outcome.
