You should be fine to freeze EBM that has been in fridge for 3-4 hours and even longer. My milk would last for 12hrs in the fridge but some women's lasts longer. It has a shelf life of 6mths once frozen.

Basically you have it right, express after each feed and freeze what you get off and within a few days you will have enough for a full feed if not a couple of them. At 3wks bubs will probably only be taking around 150mls anyway so your frozen supply will build up quite quickly.

One tip, when I was expressing and freezing for my son I found that the EMB had to be defrosted right at the time of use. Defrosting over a period of time even in the fridge meant that it went off. You defrost by placing the milk into a jug of boiled water, never use the microwave as you will kill the milk.

is expressed milk that has been stored in the fridge for 3 or 4 hours able to then be frozen?

Yep When C was in the NICU and I was home I would express 3hrly and drop the milk into the hospital once a day for them refridgerate for 48 hours or to freeze.

also how do i do about expressing a full feed? i only seem to get 45-50 mils and would like to have the option of having a full feed available so that i can have a wee break. is it just a case of ding small amounts till supply increases and i can get a full feed out?

You can express enough over the day to get a full feed, ie add the smaller amounts together. Just base the time you keep it for on the first lot of milk you expressed IYKWIM.

i really wish they'd covered this more in antenatal classes!

If you are mixing them together they must be the same temperature, so once you've expressed you can put the bottle into the fridge and combine with the previous lot once it's chilled.

You probably shouldn't, differnt temps etc, and dont add fresh or thawed to frozen.

It should be ok in the fridge for about 3 or 4 days.

in NICU if the milk was in the fridge for 24 hours it was frozen - up to 6 months
and you can add to milk in the fridge for a 24 hour period only
longer then that and no you can't

I used to pour the milk into icecube trays, and then take out what I needed when attempting a top-up. Also useful for down the track when introducing solids and needing some to make up farex etc.
