Topic: BF and periods..... Posted: 19 August 2009 at 7:54pm |
Hi all
Just wondering if any of you had had the early return of your period whilst exculsively BF?
Here I was thinking I'd have another 6 months at least before the old witch came back but no...... Arrived yesterday and my baby isn't even 13 weeks old yet!
I guess the good thing is I can start charting again....this time to AVOID pg! lol

mine did the same. I had after birth bleeding for 4wks and then 28days later bam my period. And had it regularly until i got pregnant again. I exclusively breastfed until he started solids at 4.5months and he kept feeding during the nigth until 6months. Breastfeeding didnt seem to delay mine at all. Sadly as i really could have done with a break from it lol. Solved that problem by getting pregnant again lol

Mine returned after about 10 weeks. It took a while to get into a regular pattern (varied between 25-45 days for a number of months). I don't believe I was actually ovulating though until nearly a year later (just a guess based on classic signs - wasn't temping).
Often long breaks between feeds (overnight etc) can lead to the return of AF. That didn't make any difference for me though, night feeds featured here for a long time. Still breastfeeding now - would've been nice if it had held off longer...

you have to be exclusively BFing every 4 hours (including through the night) for it to be guaranteed. heaps of ppl get pg quickly after having babies becuase MW's tell ppl they may not be fertile till they srtop BFing but they arent specific enough about the circumstances. not many ppl do 3-4 hour feeds without missing any 24 hours a day. one of the girls from AN had it back 3 weeks after her daughter was born :S

Well you ladies are going to HATE me then. LOL DS2 was ebf and AF stayed away until he was 11 months old.
Generally speaking, the earlier your AF returns the slower your return to full fertility, but like anything some women are just hyper fertile.
I am not cliche, much to my disgust, and even though we continued to use bf as our primary method of birth control after DS2 was 6 months (which is a big no-no), until I started the mini pill when he was 12 months (before coming right back off it because it didn't agree with me this time), I never got pregnant.
In case anyone is interested in what return of AF does to your fertility, this explains it.

Lol, I breastfeed on demand, always have done, and in the early days that was EVERY 2 hours day and night, and I never missed a period since I finished my post partum bleed (in fact I got one during my post partum bleed.)

yep - 13 weeks bang on the dot here too! pp bleeding lasted 6 weeks, although light for most of it. Has been regular since. She was exclusively breastfed on demand, however she started sleeping a lot longer at night at about 9 weeks old.

Still bf and no AF here. Night feedings are still happening tho. Kinda nice, so i dont mind having to feed if it means no af lol.

interesting mummytooboys about the earlier your af returns the longer it takes for you to become fully fertile. Af returned straight away for me (28days after post partum bleeding) and then i went on the mini pill. I got pregnant on the minipill. I know people think its a cop out but i was taking that thing regularly and as directed. Henry was only 7months old. And still feeding 3 hourly during the day and sometimes at night. Just going to read your link now as it sounds really interesting

AF came back straight away for all 3 of mine. After the births I had bleeding for 6 weeks straight, then 2-3wks with none them AF, & they are a lot heavier now. They have gone from a 28 day cycle with 4-5 AF to 25-26 cycle with AF 7 days.
I was fully BF all of mine.
