Can anyone suggest a good midwife or advise of any midwives to stay away from in this area. I already have a child but birthed somewhere else. Would appreciate any help. Cheers
Have been trying to make time to answer this for a few days.
You have 2 options: Independent MW or the Hospital MW.
I went with the hospital as that way your lead maternity carer is an obstetritian. You get lots of scans which is a bonus (I think I had 7 or 8). They give you a list of MW's and you can request which one you want or they can just choose one. During my time leading up to birth, time in hospital and time at home I have probably meet and had help from at least half of the MW's and they were all great.
They only thing that annoyed me with the hospital ones was that I didn't meet my MW until 20week and then a few weeks later they had to change mine...so I actually didn't meet my final MW until 30 weeks.
Hope that helps, I have heard good things aboout the independent ones too...but with timaru being a small place I don;t think a bad MW would get away woth not being good.
Im so confused as to who I should go with. I'm meeting Diane Cox on Tuesday so will see what I think of her. would welcome any comments from anyone who has had her as a midwife. My last pregnancy I had an epideral and if I want one this time I want to be able to have it but I because I won't automatically have an obstetrician I heard the independents can be a bit against this????
As far as independant midwives go you only have the choice of Diane or her partner/back up mw Anne Valentine. I am with Anne and really couldn't be happier. Have met Diane also, found her to be nice and very helpful. If you like Diane, Anne will also be there at the birth (one mw for you, one for baby) or vice versa.
My reasons for choosing an independant was that I didn't feel the need for an obstetrician as my LMC and I had heard that you got better 'continuity of care'. Also, when I first went to my GP on getting my positive pregnancy test he was totally dismissive and told me to come back for a scan at 16 weeks (!!!!) which a) they don't do and b) would have missed the window for the NT scan.
As for the independants being against epi's, not at all. They do seem to focus on a more natural approach (another reason I went that route) and Anne has told me she won't offer me one but will gladly see I get one if I request it, which in my opinion is the right way of things. And, although the independant is your LMC you still have your scans carried out by the obstericians, they are still there for you, you are still allocated one and they will liaise with the independant and make recommendations where appropriate.
