Last night my 9 week old baby woke from his sleep screaming which was horrifying! My husband was talking to someone today who suggested night terrors but I've got no idea whether this is what it was or not.

Is he too young to have night terrors? What are night terrors? When I picked him up he was stretching his legs out and kind of thrashing about. I assumed he was in some kind of pain as I just couldn't seem to console him. It didn't seem to be wind as he's never reacted like that before (of course there's a first time for everything I guess). I ended up giving him some paracetamol because I thought he seemed to be in some kind of pain and eventually he settled down. This morning he seemed perfectly fine again.

I guess I just want to know if anyone else has had issues with night terrors and is it possible that's what he had or is it more likely that he had an upset tummy or something similar.

Was he awake when he was thrashing about or did he seem to be asleep still?

I thought night terrors didnt start until they were older, but I could be wrong. My boy has had a few of these in the last few months, he will start crying and he is still asleep and he wont let me hold him and he cant be calmed down easily, so I just pat his chest or back until he stops and I shhhhh him, and say his name gently.

When he was really little he would randomly wake up screaming sometimes, but he wouldnt be thrashing about or anything, he would just scream and cry until his dummy was out back in or we gave him a cuddle and rocked him a bit etc

When he had wind he would stretch his legs out like your son did. Once he was so hysterical and stretching his legs out and thrashing about I was so worried, but after some infacol and laying on his tummy he was ok, and the only reason I knew it was wind that time was cos he did a big fart lol. This was only a few months ago as well.

Well his eyes were open but I'm not actually sure if he was awake IYKWIM. He may have been but given that he was moving around so much I just assumed he was awake.

On the wind thing he was farting right the way through the whole thing as well which is why I didn't think it was wind as well!! Typical boy!!

When Ty was a couple of weeks old he began starting to cry/scream during his sleep, it was a really frightened cry I'm convinced he was having bad dreams. My mum and I held him while he slept quite often and he would dream ALOT... and quite often would become really upset. He never thrashed about or anything like that but every baby is different! He seems to have grown out of it now... and he's only 5 months. Fingers crossed it doesn't start up again.
