Ok, I am hoping someone might be able to help me with ideas to get some actual sleep....

I have pretty horrendous reflux, plus I get really bad hip and rib pain when I am on my sides.....so I toss and turn all night varying between right side until that gets too painful or my reflux gets too bad (usually 1/2 hour to an hour) then I sit upright (but still slightly reclined so it's comfy) until I am back to normal or my heart starts racing so I know I've been on my back for too long....then onto my left side until that side gets too painful or the reflux gets too bad (my reflux is worse when lying on my side),,,,then it starts all over again until the next morning - so I'm getting around 3-4 hours sleep a night max, in fits and starts. I have pillows under my head, my bump (including my ribs), my back and my hips...

Now that I've finished my rambling...does anyone have any suggestions that may help with a decent night's sleep....??? DH is starting to feel really guilty because he is sleeping through, and I'm just running on empty....

I know you probably don't want to take them, but if it gets really bad I strongly suggest getting some sleeping pills. I played the martyr first time round and refused to take the ones prescribed to me even though I had terrible carpal tunnel so only got between 3-5 hours sleep a day (including naps) from 34ish weeks I think. I found that when it came to the labour I had no reserves and couldn't deal with it all as well as I would have liked.

So this time now that the carpal tunnel is back and the sciatic nerve pain is coming as well I have relented. There's just no way I can look after a toddler on my own without any sleep. So if it comes to that, take the pills if the doctors prescribe them (there's ones that are safe obviously).

Trust me, you need your reserves for the labour and for when you're a new mum (and I wasn't pregnant with twins lol)

Other than that, a warm bath? Although I found that more annoying but some people like them. Lavender scented stuff? A stiff drink (kidding!)

try the pillow between you knees (legs)

With twins I presume they are resting on all organs etc... so will be tough getting a position that they don't squash something. Feeling for you Kate.

The pillow under my bump is long enough that it is between my knees as well Ann...one of the girls is actually lying straight across my ribs, so when I'm on my side it makes it feel like she's using my ribs as a jungle gym (they're at their most active at night ) either that or I'm actually lying on her head which sticks out of my right hand side, or her bum, which sticks out my left hand side...

Emz...thanks for that, I may talk to my ob about it on Tuesday. I'm on medication for my reflux already (which doesn't work too great) so part of my problem is my reflux and I can easily guzzle down 1/2 a litre to a litre of milk per night...I'm guessing sleeping pills would knock me out enough that the reflux wouldn't bother me???

I know when I had reflux/heartburn the more liquid I drank the worse it got, maybe try and ease up on the liquids before bed?

Hope you find a way to get comfy and get some sleep

I'm currently sitting in a lazy boy ($500 from bigsave) and it is sooo comfy - way more comfy than bed! When I was little and had a cold and couldn't sleep for coughing, mum used to put me in a lazy boy for the night. If you have one somewhere (could you borrow?) it might be worth a try to see if it offers a comfy position?
Or are you able to nap during the day?

I'm with Emz, though, if you need to take sleeping pills to get some sleep, then do so. You can't go into new motherhood of twin already exhausted!

How good is your couch? Towards the end I used to sleep on the couch on alternating nights because it was way more comfy than bed. I'd lean against the back of the couch and it was a great nights sleep

T-Rex how on earth do you get out of the lazy boy?!?!?! My ILs have lazy boys, it may be just the style but you sink into them and because they're rockers (and can't sit upright) I get cast like a sheep!!! LOL

Kate - I had terrible reflux too which made sleep almost impossible some nights, but then I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to cut a lot of the sugars and so called "naughty" foods out of my diet and then the reflux just dissapeared, I also found too much liquid before bed made it worse and bananas made it really bad. I then had an allergic reaction to the GD meds I was on so was prescribed 1 antihistamine at night for the itching and these helped me sleep which was great, as I still had the uncomfy issues that most women get when pregnant, but the antihistamines made me so drowsy I just slept through them.

If all else failed in regards to getting no sleep I just napped during the day when I could trying to build up my reserves before labour. Oh and the rescue remedy pastilles were great too as I think I would worry about not getting any sleep which just made things worse, so these just helped to calm me down before bed.

I hope you manage to get more sleep soon and you find something that works!

I wish I had some advice, but I vividly remember how sleep deprived I was in the last few months with the gremlins - when your belly is that full of baby, it's pretty damn impossible to get comfy at all.

All I can say is that once the girls are out, you will be truly amazed at how suddenly comfortable you are again!

I'm sooooo looking forward to it Emma....and sleeping on my tummy....it is just so uncomfortable, especially with one twin straight across my ribs. The other twin is fine, it's the whole rib issue that kills me at the moment!!

HeidisMummy - I have GD as well, but even cutting out the sugar etc doesn't have any effect on my reflux The only drink I have after about 7pm is a Milo every now and then (because it's milky!!) otherwise I'm up even more than normal for loo stops LOL

I might look into those Rescue Remedy pastilles....where can I find them??

I got them from my chemist as I found the spray kind of just made the reflux worse. They have plain flavour and blackcurrant I think. You may be best to call around first and ask the chemists if they have them as some do & some don't.

O.K. so this is an expensive option but who knows maybe you already own one. My sister had massive problems sleeping when pregnant with her twins. The only thing that worked for her was going out a buying a lazy boy which she slept in every night for the last 2 months! Jess was going to get me one but I wasn't too bad on the sleep front turns out I can sleep through anything.
I always slept on my side though with a pillow between my legs as I would get really sick on my back. I think thats way the lazyboy was so good for Manda she could sleep slight up right.

Give plunket a call Kate if you are interested in trying the lazy boy thing.. I see notices for people who hire them at both my local plunket and the family centre.

I struggled from 32 weeks with reflux and hip pain at night I cant even imagine how it is for you with 2 bubba's in there.

Thanks melnel - I might just do that, and DH can assist with getting me out of it LOL Our budget doesn't really stretch to buying one.
