Topic: Sleep Problems - HELP! Posted: 17 June 2009 at 7:36am |
I am so at my wits end. It doesn't matter what I do, I simply can not get a good nights sleep. I usually fall asleep ok but wake up about 11.30pm and toss and turn for the rest of the night. My mind ticks over and over with totally random stuff and it seems now I am starting to fret about being so tired so am in that vicious circle of not getting enough sleep, stressing about it and sleeping even worse.
Short of hitting myself over the head with a baseball bat to knock me out I don't know what to do! I have tried the Rescue Remedy Sleep, tried sleeping in a seperate bed to DH and DD (she still comes into us in the middle of the night), I have tried taking panadol before bed to see if that helps but nothing seems to be working!
Any ideas would be gratefully received. At the moment I feel like a walking, emotional, tired zombie.

Hi - I have the same problem. I can't offer any suggestions to prevent you waking up - but I have a torch and a book (an old one I already know back to front) I'll read for an hour or two and nod off again. It usually works.
I know exercising in the evening also helps - but its way too cold and I'm soo not in the mood at the moment to even go there.
Good luck!

Magnesium tablets or spray are good for muscle and central nervous system relaxation.

Sorry I can't help, but just wanted to let you know that you are definitley not the only one in this boat at the moment I am just hoping it doesn't continue for the next 20 odd weeks!
I did get told that you are best to get up for 30 minutes or so and watch TV etc until you feel tired again and then go back to bed. Has worked occassionally for me.
And congratulations on the boy

These are some things that have helped me before:
Write down all the things that you keep running through your mind.
If you find you are waking up still, get up.
Make a routine for evenings before you go to bed and make sure you do it everynight - this will hopefully retrain your body to get into sleep mode.
Hot milk before bed.

Naturopath told me to get up and have something to eat as your sugar levels could be low and because baby is taking them they'll be lower then normal. My wake up time is normally 4-5am as I sleep really late at night.
She said to try protein like a big glass of milk, some yoghurt etc. Her rule is though don't eat anything you feel like you'll need to brush your teeth afterwards.
SIL grandmother religiously gets up and has honey on toast at about 12am and has for years and tells the girls that they need to do it as well

I'm writing this after being awake all night until around 5.30am and I now have to go to work, so I totally sympathise. I've tried getting up, watching TV, reading, hot milk, naturopharm spray - you name it, I've tried it. I guess I'm not much help to you, but you're most certainly not alone! Do try those things though, they won't always work but you may find a trick that does for you.
And if one more person tells me it's "natures way of preparing me for when the baby gets here" I will scream.
My doctor has prescribed me mild sleeping tablets but I am so reluctant to take them.
Hugs, because I know just how wretched you must be feeling.

I agree with a few of the things the others have said - reading, tv, insomniamed by naturopharm.
If my mind is busy thinking about things then I often picture and think about the colour black. I know it sounds strange but it stops me thinking about other things, relaxes my mind and I often fall asleep.
You could also consentrate on relaxing your body bit by bit, start at your toes then ankles, calves etc etc. This should take your mind off other things and help you sleep.
Good luck!

I also read something in a book about making sure you eat some protein before you go to bed and then keep some more by the bed for when you wake up. I haven't tried it yet - I'm not quite at that stage but I guess anythings worth a try.
The other thing I have sometimes found helpful (although not so far in this pregnancy) is shifting your thoughts to an enjoyable project (a pysch suggested it so it's not as random as it sounds!). Something like, for me, painting my little boys wooden chairs, or decorating his room. That has worked for me sometimes although if I've already worked myself up about not sleeping then it's not so great.
I hope you find something that works for you - there's nothing worse than lying awake at night.

Oh and the visualisation thing. Try and do a meditation thing like picturing your happy place and creating a nice little story with it might help.
Oh and this may be so far from your train of thoughts right now and you may not want to in anyway shape or form but try have some fun time with dp or on your own if you feel so inclined and have an orgasm. LOL just thought I would put it out there

Hi
I use to suffer quite badly from insomnia before I was pregnant. There is a juice called tart cherry juice that you can buy online, company is called Tru2u Tart Cherry Juice. It actually costs fifty dollars a bottle but its a concentrate and it lasts five weeks if you drink it every day as directed. Its full of antioxidants and has lots of health benefits. It may take a couple of weeks to build up in your system. I now sleep through the night no problems. Even though it might seem pricey, it has been well worth it, especially in terms of my sanity.

Hiya,
Just letting you know you're not alone in the no sleep buzz. Like you i can get to sleep fine, but probably 2-3 nights a week I wake about 2am or 4am and have to get up and have a hot milk, heat the weatie and write down everything that's rolling around in my head and check emails.
If you find anything that actually helps us get back to sleep without getting up, id love to know.
Good luck and hope you are sleeping better by now.

I ended up going to the Health store and getting some Magnesium tablets. They took about 3-4 nights to really start working but I am sleeping so much better. I am still waking but am not staying awake for very long and am settling easier.
Apparently they are safe to take - you can take 2 tablets a day but I have been just taking one.
