I have just found out that I am pregnant from a home pregnancy test. Do I now go to my GP or contact a midwife?

First point of call most people take is going to their gp. They will then organise your first bloods, mine wrote a generic letter "to the midwife" stating that I had been in for smear test etc.

They may ask you to pee on another stick etc.

Congratulations btw

Edited to say depending where you are and how far along you are it might pay to start talking to your friends who are new mums about who they used for their mw now. You technically don't need to have a mw until your 14weeks I think it is but the beginning of the year is an extrememly busy time of year so you might be hard pressed to find one. Also word of mouth is a good way to find your mw I found mine through dps workmates wife she loved her and shes been real good for me so far.

I rang my gp - they said I should have an appt with a nurse. It was a bit of waste of time really though. She gave me a bounty pack (that was about the only thing I got out of it) and then suggested I ring a midwife - which I'd already done. My midwife offered me another bounty pack the first day I met with her anyway, so I don't think there is any reason to see your gp. The midwife did all my bloods and everything.

Unless you want to be 100% sure I would skip the GP and just find yourself a mw as they can send you for first bloods etc anyway. As Elle said it is usually best to try and find a mw ASAP as the beginning of the year is often when they take holidays so there is a shortage on top of the standard shortage that there seems to be.

Word of mouth is good as Elle said, otherwise ask the ladies on here for recommendations for your area or search the existing threads about recommendations. You can 'shop around' and speak to a few if you don't click with the first one you meet.

I would go straight to a midwife too, GP's don't seem be able to offer anymore info etc

Congratulations!!

I went to the GP first time round with Ollie and really the only thing he did was make me pee on a stick again to confirm it. Oh and he gave me a bounty pack (which my MW didn't offer me).

Second time round the only reason I have been to the GP was because my first MW appt wasn't until this week and I really needed some meds for my morning sickness. I would just opt for finding yourself a midwife. If they don't see you early on you can always ask them to send out a referral for the first blood test.

I went to my GP, but only because she is my LMC (ie I don't need a midwife), otherwise I think I would have called a midwife asap to get booked in.

Congratulations!

With Ollie I went to my GP because I had no idea what to do (and hadn't discovered OHbaby yet ). He sent me off for bloods, gave me heaps of information (including info on miscarriage which freaked me out) and also suggested a midwife who I used and absolutely loved.

All the best for the next 8 or so months

A bounty pack contains info for pregnant mums including a guide with heaps on info on what to expect each week etc, info on food to avoid/food hygiene, a book to record your midwife visits- with space for the test results like blood pressure that they will do each visit,..and some free samples of wipes, bio oil etc.

Thanks for all the info. I actually already have a son, but I used my GP, who was also a LMC last time (well at first, later changed to midwife). It came as a bit of a shock that I was pregnant as I did one test about a month ago which said I wasn't. I didn't really believe that I was until I had a scan today. I have managed to get hold of QCM and hopefully they will be able to fit me in. Excited but nervous....again!
