    Posted: 29 May 2009 at 5:53pm
Hi all

I have a really good milk supply in the mornings and i BF Ashley my daughter on demand - she sleeps great and is really settled in the morning

i make sure i drink plenty of water and have a good diet but i just dont seem to have the supply to satisfy her in the evening. This morning i managed to express off a bit after she had finished feeding so hopefully that will help for later but the last few days she has been sucking me dry and is still not happy!

I had to resort to a formula top up last night which i didnt really want to do but she wouldnt settle and was HUNGRY!
she is literally feeding off me until my boobs ache bad!

Any suggestions for upping evening supply?

I'd love to know too. I have the same problem. It started when Ava was about 4 weeks and no matter how much I ate, drank etc I never had enough milk for the last feed at 7pm. I decided to give 1 bottle of formula a day and have been doing so since then. It gives me some freedom to cook dinner as DH can feed her.

It is normal for it to appear that supply decreases in the evening, as this is when infants normally cluster feed. They are getting to the fatty hindmilk, which helps satisfy their hunger. You do have enough milk. I know it maybe annoying, but planting yourself on the couch for an hour or so is the best thing to do.

Don't resort to a formula top-up, as that will actually cause your supply to decrease. Allow baby as much time on the breast, as it can take up to a week for supply to increase. Breastfeeding is a supply/demand response, and the demand helps increase prolactin levels in the body.

Some tips on increasing supply are:

- eating porridge in the morning. There has been research to suggest that foods that naturally lower cholesterol levels (such as oats) has an effect on increasing supply.

- drinking too much water can actually decrease supply. Just stick to the 6 to 8 glasses of fluids a day, and remember that fluid in food counts as well.

- try breast compressions to help facilitate more flow whilst baby is feeding.

- try homeopathic remedies, as some mums have success with these.

I would highly suggest looking at the kellymom website for tips and advice on increasing supply.

Hope that helps, and keep up the good work on breastfeeding

Cheers all

Lady_aset - other than the homeopathic stuff i have been doing all of that and the problem is she will stay at the boob for well over an hour and it makes my actual boob (Not nipple) very sore.

I might have a chat to a Lactation consultant too.

I've been told that it's best to have a rest in the afternoon if possible and to have some complan or protein of some sort at around 2pm, so most afternoons I'll have some form of eggs as a snack. That seems to work for us, although at nighttime I'll normally feed Ryan then give him a bath and feed him again off the other side so I know he's had a decent feed before bed too.

Is it possible that Ashley is comfort sucking rather than feeding? I would think seeing an LC would be a really good idea.

KazS - do you offer both sides? I do the same with Lucian at night, he normally spends half and hour on each boob. But seeing an LC will be the best, as sometimes a baby's latch can alter over time.

Have you tried adding brewer's yeast to some food during the afternoon to help? Naturally brewed ginger beer is a great source.

I did have some success with the Naturopharm milk flow spray when my supply tanked (due to a combo of mastitis, food poisoning and a bad cold), but I using it in combination with domperidone.

Yip i offer both sides - she will quite happily drain both breasts and then some!

I will give a LC a call on Tuesday

Cheers

Last night i had more than enough supply for her! Just took a little longer for the body to catch up than it had previously!

Thanks all so much for the advice!
