Topic: hyperemesis Posted: 24 May 2009 at 7:19pm |
I'm hoping those of you who've had this, or have it can help. I'm 9 weeks and am really struggling with hyperemesis. My poor old DH is doing the best he can but I'm not doing a good job of being wife, mother or employee at the moment. My GP has a list of drugs to try but so far nothing has made a difference (I've tried Maxalon, Buccastem and Cyc.lizine) Sometimes a new one will work for 24 hours and then seems to stop. I'm not dehydrated enough yet to warrant a hospital admission although some days have been borderline.
So...has anyone had success with any of the medication they've been offered? And if so, what was it?
And, were there any other tricks that got you through.
I know this is only for another 7 months or so but I'm finding it really hard to cope (and so is my DH!!) so any advice would be great.

Zofran is the only thing that even slightly took the edgeoff for me, and that was as part of a cocktail with cyclazine and maxalon.
As for getting thru it, I must be pretty much an expert after 3 hyperemetic pregnancies, but I found different things helped each time.
Lemonade ice blocks got me thru first tri every time - coz you have to suck them, they go down slower than if you were drinking lemonade.
With the gremlins I couldn't drink water coz it made me feel bloated and vomit so I drank gallons of weak Ribena and those Mizone sports waters (I can't even look at them now ).
I found the first 16 weeks the worst, I had hospital admissions/IV fluids with all 3 pregnancies.
From about 16 weeks I found if I threw up first thing in the morning on an empty stomach then ate some dry toast the nausea was less severe for the rest of the day. If I didn't throw up first thing, I would pretty much vomit everything I ate.
Other than that, just rest as much as you can (not easy with a baby as well!) I found I was much more nauseous when I was tired and when I was asleep was the only time of the day that I didn't feel crap.
I hope this helps, I really feel for you coz hyperemesis is evil. Did you have it with Ollie? I can't remember.

Oh and you may need a specialist to prescribe the Zofran, I'm not sure how restricted it is.

Thanks Emma, I knew you would have some ideas! I had pretty bad morning sickness with Ollie but this seems worse. I'm throwing up every meal and quite often anything I eat or drink in between.
I think you are amazing for doing this three times. I would love to have three children but this will be it for me - I can't handle being this sick!
I think I'll ring the GP again tomorrow and talk to him about Zofran - and mixing meds. So far I've tried each on their own but everyone else I've spoken to has had a mixture of things in order for it to work. I guess he'll refer me on if needs be - I just hope I don't have to wait too long if that's the case.
Thanks for the other ideas too. Lemonade iceblocks sound divine right now!

Ha ha, I said that exact same thing when I was preg with the gremlins! I was so sick that I was absolutely certain there would be no more babies!

I agree with everything Emma has said. I have gone through this three times with this pregnancy (3rd) being the worst I have hospital admissions with all three pregnancies and this one every week from week 6 to 15. I have lost a total of 12 kilos with some slowly going back on now things are improving.
Hyperemesis is truly evil and I sympathise with anyone going through it - I have to say it is the toughest thing I have had to go through in my life so far.
I still vomit in the mornings but at least I can now get out of bed and dressed for the day so things to get a *little* easier as the weeks go by. I never found anything to really help - I was on a mix of drugs with zofran being the main one then mixed with maxolon and cyclizine. They didn't work 100% of the time as I found as my hormones kept increasing in the early weeks the drugs would loose their effectivness.
Hang in there...........I KNOW it seems that you can't do it and you want it to stop but it will get more manageable (even though that is so hard to believe early on).
Rest up as much as you can

I have no idea what its like to be that sick, but when I had ms, lemonade ice blocks seemed to help, and also the morningmed spray stuff from naturopharm.

Thanks guys. I have another GP appointment tomorrow and I've asked about the referral criteria for a specialist. I think I've lost weight (although I rarely weigh myself) - my smallest jeans are now too big. And the only reason I've kept throwing up to a minimum today is because I did absolutely nothing at work today.
I totally agree Tweedle - this is easily the hardest thing I've ever been through even though I know there is an end point.
It's so nice knowing there are other people out there who know what it's like too. That's almost the hardest thing - the lovely people who keep telling me to eat crackers in bed even when I've explained that I'm a bit beyond that point!!!
And thanks Sheena - I couldn't let you be the only June mummy to be having their second!! It'll be a hige milestone to have reached one!

Absolutely! I felt like socking people when they offered advice, I know they were only trying to help but it was just like "you have nooooo idea!" With Chiara I was so sick that when I had a bleed at 8 weeks I prayed that I would miscarry so I would stop feeling so awful . What a horrible thing to think about my own precious bub, but hyperemesis is so all-consuming and debilitating.
The worst part for me is that I also get ptyelism (excessive saliva), I was going thru a box of tissues a day from spitting the excess saliva out coz if I swallowed it, it made me vomit. It made my lips dry and cracked at my mouth dry so I was constantly taking small sips of water and putting vaseline on my lips, and I was really self conscious about it so I wouldn't go anywhere with people I didn't know or feel comfortable with.
Oh and 20+ months of vomiting every day plus the ptyelism has stripped all the enamel from my teeth so they are all shot to pieces.
I am soooo jealous of people who just sail thru their pregnancies!

I just wanted to offer hugs - you poor thing!
I'm not as sick as you, but I have also wanted to tell people to shove their cracker theories where the sun doesn't shine.

Like others I have been sick and hospitalised with both pregnancies. My suggestion is if your dr does't listen to you then keep pushing until you find one who does. I saw a dr at 13 /15 weeks and really felt like she was fobbing me off. I got a lot of you'll start feeling better soon at x weeks, theres a difference between throwing up and trying to throw up (yeah lady the only reason I ain't throwing up is cos there's nothing left to bring up). In the end she reluctantly prescibed the meds I asked for as suggested by MMH (they suggested I stay clear of the maxalon and try domperidone) - but only gave me 10 days supply. I was lucky that I stopped throwing up at 19 weeks, which was the same stage that I did with DS1.
I tried anything and everything I could, and if something worked then stuck at it for as long as it worked.

Thank you so much guys. The worst thing is that occassionally I have a good day and keep some food down so then I wonder whether I'm just making a bigger deal out of it that I ought and being a drama queen! I'm sure my mother thinks I am - she denies any nausea with the three of us at all. My lovely grandmother thinks that we must be the weak generation of women if we are so silly to get this sick!!!
Emma - I have felt the same - I had forgotten that feeling with Ollie but I have said to DH with both pregnancies that if I miscarried it would be really hard to want to get pregnant again because it's so awful.
Hmmmm...I wonder what the GP will say when I start suggesting drugs for myself!!! I think Zofran and Domperidone are next on my list - or a combo. I'll let you know how I get on.

So the latest is that I'm trying Buccastem and cyclizine together. I'm pretty dehydrated but ketones are okay so I'm not in need of hospital yet (thank goodness!). So...fingers crossed these work.
I seem to have a great team of GPs. Both my normal GP and the locum I saw today have been really supportive so far so I don't feel too bad going to see them every few days!

Oh kate I so feel for you right now, I'm not having a good time with Ms at all, but then I never do. I seriously don't know why I keep doing this to myself - getting pg!! I know the reward at the end is worth it, but my goodness it sucks soooo bad right now. My life is consumed by this horrible feeling. I'm eating like a rabbit - mostly fruit which doesn't fill me up enough - and then I don't feel like anything else, and will try different things but nothing appeals to me. So I end up eating nothing, then I need to throw up cos I'm so hungry. I'm not on maxolon yet, am trying to hold off taking it, but I think I'll tire out soon and ask my MW for a script for some.
Glad to hear you don't need IV fluids yet, but you poor thing .

Poor Angel! Did you have it with Henry too?
I'm back at the start again - the combo of drugs doesn't work either. The trouble is, the only thing that does semi work is doing nothing but lying in bed / on the couch. Not something I can do unless we manage to get that winning lotto ticket!!
Oh well, knowing there are other women out there who are going through it and have been through it does make me feel like I'm not on my own. I'm starting to think that you do just have to grin and bear it.

No such luck Emma. I'm not sure whether to keep going back to the GP until we find something that works (at $40 a visit) or just to accept that maybe I just have to eat what I can and hope that I keep enough down. The dietitians at work have been great and suggested things like Complan after I throw up so that I'm replacing food with something vaguelly decent.
What do you think? Should I try the GP? We haven't tried Zofran or Domperidone yet so maybe one more go!

I think definitely try the GP. Have you checked out the site hyperemesis.org? They have lots of advice and tips that are slightly more useful than the usual dry crackers and toast.
