I've been hearing a lot of people saying they have purchased "granny" undies or disposables etc for wear after birth. Why? I know that we need to wear big thick maternity pads for up to a few weeks but I was just going to go with a few pairs of ladies boy-leg undies (cotton of course). Am I missing something here?

i think people get granny ones in case of c section as they will go up and over the scar. Also it is very possible that you will make a bit of a mess of some of them so cheapie ones that you can throw if they get too grotty. I just found some old ones in the back of my drawer and used them

in the event of a c section the granny undies are way more comfortable so that they sit above the cut rather than underneath. Also because that way you can just chuck them out if you leak through the pads (which can happen alot). I only wore them for just over a week but it was sooooo handy having them instead of normal undies.

I'm only guessing (no experience in this department yet) but I'd be taking the big granny knickers as they are ugly but super comfy and if things got messy I could just throw them out.
Someone suggested the tena pants and I know you can get a free sample from Tena - (they send out a couple of sizes for you to try)
But I reckon anything that would be easy to care for and comfy is fine (with plenty of room for the huge pads). (but again I have not been through any of this)

Yeah I took a couple of pairs of boy leg ones to hospital and the first thing I asked my friend for when she rang up post birth was a pack of granny undies lol.

They get pretty wrecked and you need the biggest undies you can get because you're basically sitting on a pad that's so big it's like a mattress and you still have a big belly.

Also they kinda hold your tummy in afterwards! Your tummy goes all weird and marshmellow like as it goes down and you kinda feel like the granny knickers hold it in a wee bit.

yip to what everyone else has said. With my first i took a pack of granny undies and also some boy leg ones and i took the BL ones off almost straight away! and put the granny ones on!, i had natural births so no CS wound but i still found the spacious yet "surf board pad supporting" granny undies a hell of alot more comfy!....second time around i just went straight to the granny packs!!....

oh and i did end up throwing most out and wouldv been a bit peeved throwing out somewhat pricier BL undies.

I wore guys undies which were super comfy. They have a wider crutch bit which is great for holding the big maternity pads in.

I didn't have any leaks or anything, so now they have just become part of the circulation of dh's undies. I actually think he is none the wiser!

I didn't find the cut of undies made much difference for me and my c/s. I had hipster type granny undies so the elastic wasn't too firm, I guess that's all that matters. Boyleg would be equally as good for pads.

This time Im going with firm fitting boy leg ones! My granny panties were awful! I think you need tighter fitting ones to keep the pads in place

ETA-Oh except, yes in the first little while after my C Section undies that sat above the scar were better for sure, but if I can find higher fitting boy legs then I will go with them(in case i need another c section)

Thanks girls, I'll throw in my bag the boy legs, a few pairs of normal cheapo cottons I have and a few pairs of DH's undies and if they all fail me I'll send someone out granny panty shopping

I just took the grottier pairs I had in my drawer that I had been wearing while I was preg, they were comfy and I didn't feel bad chucking them when they got grotty (which they did).

My other advice on the subject (and it took me till baby#4 to figure this one out) is that you can fold up the blue bed liner thingies into a rectangle and tuck them in behind your surfboards for the first 24 hours or so, they catch any leaks and keep your knickers cleaner.

after the birth i had realy really bad bleeding and the nurse got one of those 'blueys' that maya was talking about into 4 so they were really long then she put 2 big maternity pads on top of each other and it was the 'mega pad' it was awesome so keep it in mind if you have really bad bleeding

Oooh good idea Emma and Monikah - I will definitely improvise a bit more this time around. I had a few leaks the first few days last time.

Of course when you have a C-sect initially you don't get any undies and just get to sit on the bed liner pads since you have a catheter. Ahh good times

I was exactly the same last time and again this time I've just bought a couple of packs of 5 bikini briefs from kmart.

Ahh the ultimate end to your dignity laying on the bed after a c-section with no knickers on, a catheter shoved up there and bleeding all over bed liners AND having nurses wipe you up AND having a beautiful blonde slim doctor put her hand up there to check for clots!

Ooh I didn't get 'clot inspections' thank god.

Renee I think the ultimate end to my dignity was having my handsome OB operate on me with my freshly (and badly thanks to DH) shaven area and a catheter being inserted in his presence. Some things are just best forgotten
