Topic: uterus shrinking - pain Posted: 11 May 2009 at 1:57pm |
im really struggling with breastfeeding just because of the pain of my uterus contracting back to normal size. its really painful almost like early contractions and lasts for quite a while so i struggle just to breathe through it. does anyone have any tips for making it not hurt so much other than taking panadol and also how long this lasts for? any help would be great.

Huge congrats!!!
Yeah second time around it hurts like snot! Then your letdown will hurt heaps more as well!!
My midwife said to me when I go to the loo to press down on my ute to help it get smaller/expell everything.
I think mine was only really painful for the first week?

Congratulations!
Check with your MW but I'm pretty sure you can take nurofen too now that baby's here, also try wheat bags, rescue remedy and rasberry leaf tea (it helps tone the uterus).
As fattarts said BFing (although painful) will make everything shrink faster so although the pain is intense now it won't last for as long iykwim.

Congrats, Monikah!
I was advised to massage the uterus down towards the pelvis while lying on my back for a few mins every day to help speed the shrinking.. as well as to keep BFing, as toe-curling and tense as it can be.
I didn't take any pain relief at that time but my MW said Panadol is fine, as it is in pregnancy.
The shrinking pains lasted about a week for me too.. I hope yours stop soon!
All the best

Congrats Monikah!
Yep, afterpains hurt like a biarch, I got lucky and didn't have too many after the gremlins, but after lil miss they were so bad that I would cry coz they hurt so much, and I couldn't sleep. I was still at Birthcare, they gave me Ponstan and pamol which seemed to help take the edge off it but I agree, they are worse than labour pains coz labour pains peak then die off whereas afterpains can peak for several minutes.
Like the others have said, they do pass. I don't remember them being too bad once I got home which was day 4.

Yay Congratulations. I was on a heap of pain killers for my 2nd degree tear and episiotomy so didn't notice that pain at all second time around. I found first time around though that it only lasted about a week maybe 10 days tops.
Good luck with not giving birth Kelly

Congratulations on your little boy!
I didn't have (or at least didn't notice) afterpains after Ollie, so I thought something was wrong after I had Lilia
They were really bad for about a week and then took at least another week to go completely. I took Panadol too which took the worst of the pain away.

Oooo I haven't thought about after pains for a while. Mine were awful just like contractions. I didn't have them with Dom and so didn't know what they were and I thought my uterus was falling out it, was so painful. You can take nurophen while breastfeeding and that might help a little more than panadol.
If it gets too much then unlatch him for a bit and then put him back on. But the more you feed the faster the pains will go.
Congratulations on your son!

Just make sure the panadol is at hand before you latch, it won't last long (4 days for me for DD4, I think).

Firstly! Congratulations
I had quite uncomfy contractions afterwards as well, but thatw as after a C Section and I was already on painkillers, so I imagine if I wasnt on the pain killers they would have been a lot more painful.
So yea, Id keep taking panadol, before you breastfeed so it has time to kick in. It(the pain) should only last a few days.
