Topic: Bottle Feeders - Formula Question Posted: 10 May 2009 at 8:03am |
HI all - small question, which formula do you use and why?
I have been using Karicare Gold, but my DD appears in have mild 'reflux' - she seems to get heartburn and stretches out like a banana during feeds. And sometimes she takes forever to settle because of this.
The Plunket line advises I switch to SMA Pink or Nurture Plus - they are based Casein based formulas, rather than whey based. Apparently they take longer to digest and are thicker, this helps reflux. I have no experience with either of these formulas.
I am nervous about changing formulas as I dont want to get my DD all stressed out or constipated, any advice or your thoughts on which brand is best would be appreciated.
PS - I also posted this question in the Bottle feeding thread just to cover all the bases. ta.

If she seems to have reflux I would see your gp rather than just change formulas. Also there is one called AR (i think) that is made by Karicare for reflux babies so sticking with the same manufacturer might be better?
If you do change it is better to change one feed per day, so one feed of the new formula on day one, two of the new formula on day 2 and so on, that way it gives their tummies time to adjust.
Good luck

I use S26. We started with Nurture and it made Joels tummy really hard, and very noisy, and also made him extremely spilly. When we changed he still spilled but a lot less (like maybe a quarter of the amount/times). I have just changed him up to the next stage (started at 8 months instead of 6) and it has taken me 3 weeks to swap but now we have no spilling at all. (YAY finally). Also he had no tummy or constipation problems on S26.

We use s26 too, we started on Karricare gold and it was not good for him, caused him to be constipated, arch and scream during feeding.
Someone on here said the gold formulas are not really needed for babies under 6 months.
Not had any issues since moving to s26
We changed to the next stage up without any issues either.

Hi Moochiecat
With the formula it really is trail & error unfortunately. What suits one bub may or maynot be suitable for unother. Both my FF babes had different formulas & from experience the "gold", "gold+" didnt suit my boys. Funnily the gold+ was taken off the shelves.
It wouldnt hurt to chat to the GP about the reflux also
All the best

I was told to stay away from the gold formulas as they can be quite harsh on the tummy (apparently) I have to admit I tried S26 gold once and the girls weren't that keen. So we have always gone with regular S26.

LOL - I'm just a cheap mum so he gets the basic Karicare. Daniel's a refluxy baby but it didn't seem to make any difference what he drank.

Definately think that you need to have the reflux diagnosed and treated if necessary. With Dominic we use Karicare HA formula because he is cow's protein intolerant and this formula is partially hydrolysed (the protein has been changed). Isobelle has reflux and the cow's protein allergy so we use HA AR an thickened form of Dom's formula.

Hi All - thanks for the info and helpful advice. Took DD to the doctor on Monday, he did a urine test and we had a good long talk about her feeding and the urine test came back negative, so he prescribed Losec in a solution, plus I changed formula to Nurture Plus. And so yesterday gave her losec before her fed, and she slept for 3.5 hours!! Like an angel, she must have been knackered poor wee thing. Since then she's been really good, feeding ok and losec once a day. So fingers, toes, everything crossed !!!
Thanks once again everyone, as having a sad, sore baby is the worst heartache I have ever known, and you guys helped me alot. hx
