I hope the press aren't scare-mongering, as there only seem to be deaths in Mexico from it so far, but it's not a good thing to have lurking around for us pregnant ladies.

I get everything going, which even without a new deadly flu is worrying enough when pregnant! I am downing the Vit C and trying to stay clear of sick people.

I think there's certainly some risk but yes I think the media are very guilty of scaremongering at the moment.

It is worrying but at least currently it's responsive to drugs that we have on hand. But yay USA for already dishing out heaps of tamiflu - I bloody well hope that they were legitimate cases because all we need is for the strain to mutate

but the latest sounds like it might already have mutated -into a less viralent form - so that's all good ;-)

I don't think it would be a good idea to take Tamiflu while pregnant unless you really had to.

ooh I definitely agree about not having it when pregnant if possible Marie - but at least it means that they can stop the spread through the majority of the population.

Hope you are ok. That would be stress you definitely don't need. I'll be sending good luck vibes your way

Just to put another spin on it - half a million people die every year from the flu anyway -so the death rate in Mexico etc is not that unexpected in the flu season, if that makes sense? Especially given the state of the medical system, ecomony etc in mexico.

Yeah I was wondering that - I mean it's not like people in Mexico city would be in the same state of health generally as someone in NZ.

The flu is normally a greater risk to the young & elderly, but the Swine Flu seams to be hitting the middle group. Just heard on the news that they say there are 60 cases in NZ, but with reporters who knows, & what degree are they.

myonlineself FX you are in the clear.

They are only suspected cases and we do NOT have a confirmed case in New Zealand at this stage.

But they're already on the mend so that's a good sign (heehee can you tell I'm an eternal optimist? )

I work in a pharmacy in Tauranga. Today alone we've sold at least 50 face masks. We've had at least 7 queries about Tamiflu.

Tamiflu is prescription only until 1st May. Between 1st May and end of Sept it is a pharmacist only medication. So to get it you'd have to present to a pharmacy with flu symptoms and have a consultation with a pharmacist. Both on prescription and purchased from a pharmacist it costs around $80 per person.

myonlineself, its not recommended for pregnant women except if the benefits for the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus.
