I'm pretty sure 6 months is the minimum age everywhere - for chlorinated pools anyway.

Mel, do you mean for lessons or just to go in the pool? We take C in the pool already, he's been going for the past 3-4 weeks or so. We don't put his head under or splash water in his face in the pool but we do splash his face in the shower to start getting him used to it But lessons here are 6 months + as well (unless you pay an instructor privately)

Most lessons are from 6 months, I couldn't find anywhere in Wellington earlier than that but some private pools do exist in other cities which have lessons from 3 months.

There is nothing stopping you from taking bubs in the pool earlier than that but it's just the policy of the swimming pool I guess.

We enrolled the girls at 6 months, they were 5 weeks prem so were technically only 5 months old. For the first term they used to get cold by the end of the lesson and that was with a polyprop on also.

I was just meaning for a play swim. I am going to a 1st bday party next weekend and I thought that Eva couldn't go splash in the pool cause she had to be 6 months.... does this mean she can go and splash in the pool? She loves baths

Grandma has already bought her about 5 pairs of togs... but the smallest ones are 6-9 months.

It is Tawa Pool...

be careful with the little babies in the pool as even though the toddler pools are nice and warm their body temp can drop very quickly and they get too cold.

I think (from a foggy memory!) that Amy was about 5mo the first time I took her and about 20 mins was her max before she was cold and shivery. Also watch them drinking the water

She'll be fine in the Tawa toddler pool and I'm sure she'll love it.  Just keep an eye on her temp while you're there and overdress her when she first comes out.

Ok so another question, do you have to use those special water nappies when swimming? Or is it only to catch a poo?

Eva has gaviscon so only poos once every 3-4-5-6 days... so I am quite safe with her not pooing in the water.

Unless your child is toilet trained they need to wear a swim nappy.  Most pool staff will actually check that you have one before letting you in the pool.  You can buy singles from the pool though if you don't want to buy a whole packet.

ETA: they do only catch poo but still it is a health and safety requirement

Sweet, where do you buy packs from? I looked at woolworths and they don't have them small enough... Eva is 5.6kg.

How much are singles from the pool?

Thanks Mrs Mojo for all the help.
