If you buy a packet of baby rice (Watties or Farex) how do you prepare it?

The reason I ask is that I saw a clip on how to make your own baby rice, basically grind it, pass through sieve and cook with water for 10 mins, then freeze and mix with food.

Do you have to cook the packet stuff for 10mins or is it already cooked and you just add BM or water and stir?

Eva isn't ready for solids, I am just trying to learn as much as I can so when she is ready I will kinda be ready. Thanks

At first, I would just add BM and stir. Now I add formula and/or water and fruit to help the iron absorbtion. I will keep using ready made baby rice for a while cos it is so rich in iron.

I love it cos its so easy, you just add liquids until its at a consistency that your baby likes.

Finley has that or baby muesli for brekky each day, mixed with some fruit, or yog, or formula/water and he loves it.

Yeap, add baby's normal milk and stir :)

The Farex etc has added iron which is why I am sticking to that for a while.

I think you can cook normal rice and puree it after it's cooked, rather than grinding etc before cooking. I've never tried it though.

Its only the baby porridge that you need to cook and still I never did
I just added bm, then formula and finally water and fruit as he got older.
If you are worried about what brand to buy don't be Watties own Farex and the rice cerals are identical.

Thanks for the replies, the watties website had both watties and farex and they both had the same ingredients.

I didn't think babies needed iron until 6 months and then you cook the veges with meat and the iron comes out of the meat?

It sounds like giving bought baby rice is so much easier then doing it yourself cause you have to cook the rice if you make it yourself.

So much to learn.

Baby rice is easier in the beginning, basically 'cos of its instant nature, and 'cos it has the iron fortification. I often use it to thicken runny foods.

Once bubs is a bit bigger and on 'Stage 2' foods you can use regular rice 'cos it has a bit of chew. Baby goat had a mixture of basmati rice with pureed pork and broccoli tonight and LOVED it. She has her 2 bottom teeth coming through now so she needs to practise using them!

Babies start needing iron at *around* 6 months, so there's no harm in feeding Farex a little earlier. Although Plunket now recommend waiting until at least 6 months before solids..... can't say I know of anyone who has waited that long though.

FF babies start needing iron at "around 6 months", ebf babies who were full-term and have no medical issues probably have enough iron "stores" to last at least 9 months if not longer. DS2 didn't start solids until he was 7 months, and wasn't on 3 meals a day until he was nearly 10 months. It's not a race as to when you start them, you should start them when they show signs of being ready, but not before 4 months.

Iron fortified food has been shown to inhibit the absorption of iron in bf babies so we skipped it and went straight to porridge oats. There are plenty of other ways to get iron than feeding them iron fortified food that is harder for them to process, some of them can be found here.

My MIL said that they give rice (not ground) for a first food in Fiji... still now days, not just back in the day.

That list of foods with iron said that brown rice has iron in it, so in theory if you made your own baby rice using brown rice your baby would be getting iron? I am BF at the moment but not sure how long I will BF for as she is very intollerent to dairy, I can't even have a tiny bit... am thinking I might BF until she starts solids, but if it is going to be 7 months then I might not last that long...
