    Posted: 24 April 2009 at 11:26am

I have just found out I am pregnant and have a colposcopy appointment for a few weeks time (at which point I will be about 7 weeks pregnant).

Does anyone know if it is safe to do this while pregnant or should I reschedule my appointment?

Wow congrats!!!

I'm pretty sure you can't have a smear when you're pregnant, and a colposcopy is like an extreme smear, so I'd say nope, you'll need to reschedule. Lucky you, colposcopies are horrible!

Give them a ring anyway...

Personally- I would consult with your doc- and pref ring the gyno and ask.

I wouldnt... having had one myself when I wasnt preggo.
I doubt they will do it..... your cervix changes dramatically when pregnant- and thats what theyre looking at after all. Wait till after.

My 2c.

hmm I just did a little google and seems I'm completely wrong! (Nothing wrong with a smear or a colposcopy for that matter while pregnant, but pregnancy can mean that you get an 'abnormal' result that you wouldn't otherwise.)

So strike what I previously said, that'll learn me for posting before thinking

Haha, thanks girls. I am seeing my Doc next Friday so will see what he says. Can't say I'll miss having one if that's what he says - definately not my favourite thing to do

Having had one, I would say it is probably not the best idea to have one while pregnant. If I was you I would be rescheduling.

Congratulations by the way

I am pretty sure Bel had one done when she was pregnant, you could PM her and ask her about it.

Congrats!

I had a col. smear (follow up after cone biopsy) when preg. I called the Col Clinic and they told me to come in. I'm not sure if you were actually having the col that they would, but a smear while preg is definitely safe.

Best of luck!

I have just seen my gyne and no you can't have it done. You can let them know you are pregnant and they will reschedule an appointment after baby is born.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I was 4 weeks pregnant and had one done. I told them and they said it would make no difference... got a normal result back and it meant that I didn't have to worry about it for whole pregnancy.

You ring the clinic and see what they say...

Perhaps its worth talking to them about the potential results and what implications they may have on the pregnancy??
ie- if you arent going to do anything till after the pregnancy (thats IF there is an abnormality), then would it matter to wait till after the pregnancy anyways.... why put yourself through the extra stress of it.....

Whatever you choose to do is the right decision at the end of the day
